View Full Version : Characters who left and were replaced by relatives
Heidi Dawn 01-28-2009, 04:02 PM I apologize if this was a thread already made. It seems there were a lot of shows where one character left and another relative took their place.
Dukes of Hazzard - Bo and Luke leave temporarily and their cousins Coy and Vance step in. I actually didn't mind Coy and Vance, but I was glad when Bo and Luke came back. Also, Cooter leaves for 4 episodes and is replaced by cousin L.B. in 3 of them and his other cousin B.B. in the other one.
The Love Boat - Julie McCoy leaves and is replaced by cousin Judy McCoy.
The Andy Griffith Show - Gomer Pyle leaves and is replaced by his cousin Goober Pyle.
Happy Days - Richie Cunningham leaves and his cousin Roger Phillips replaces him. Joanie Cunningham leaves temporarily and is replaced by cousin K.C. Cunningham.
Three's Company - Chrissy Snow leaves and is replaced by cousin Cindy Snow.
All In The Family - Gloria and Mike leave and are replaced by distant cousin Stephanie Mills.
Charlie's Angels - Jill Munroe leaves and is replaced by sister Kris Munroe.
Empty Nest - Barbara leaves and is replaced by sister Emily.
Newhart - Leslie leaves and is replaced by cousin Stephanie.
Designing Women - Suzanne leaves and is replaced by cousin Allison. Charlene leaves and is replaced by sister Carlene.
Marvo301 01-28-2009, 07:26 PM On "Family Affair" Giles French left temporarily (actor Sebastian Cabot was ill) and was replaced by his brother Nigel French.
Marvo301 01-28-2009, 08:07 PM Thought of another one. On "Dennis the Menace" George Wilson exited the show(actor Joseph Kearns passed away) and was replaced by his brother John Wilson.
jehobden 01-28-2009, 08:32 PM On The Facts of Life, Edna Garrett left and was replaced by her sister, Beverly Ann Stickle, for the last two seasons.
jehobden 01-28-2009, 08:42 PM For the third & final season of Land of the Lost, Rick Marshall goes through a door of time back to the 20th century, just as his brother Jack joins Rick's kids Will & Holly back in prehistoric times.
catlover79 01-28-2009, 08:52 PM While Alice was away, her twin sister filled in for her as the maid of the Brady Bunch for an episode (Ann B. Davis played a dual role in this one).
Marvo301 01-28-2009, 10:55 PM On "My Three Sons" Uncle Bub O'Casey was replaced by his brother Uncle Charlie O'Casey.
Mikado 01-28-2009, 11:12 PM On Corner Gas, Bartender Paul Kinistino was replaced in season 4 by a relative, Phil Kinistino....they never said whether they were father and son, brothers, or cousins
Jude The Obscure 01-28-2009, 11:39 PM While Alice was away, her twin sister filled in for her as the maid of the Brady Bunch for an episode (Ann B. Davis played a dual role in this one).
No, that was Cousin Emma. (Although in real life, Ann does have an identical twin).

That's right - it's been ages since I've seen that episode. Thanks, Jude.
treky 01-29-2009, 03:11 AM on the last episode of "NICHOLS", Sherrif Nichols was killed and his identical twin brother (who was also played by James Garner) came to town to claim the body.
On "MAVERICK" Brett Maverick was replaced in one season (because James Garner was involved in a lawsuit over his character; with Warner Bros.-the studio that made the show) by his cousin Beau played by Roger Moore (I don't know how they explained Bretts absence)
Zoneboy 01-29-2009, 03:48 AM Thought of another one. On "Dennis the Menace" George Wilson exited the show(actor Joseph Kearns passed away) and was replaced by his brother John Wilson.
I was originally going to post this one but wasn't sure if it count or not since the character had to replaced due to the actor's death.
janet42 01-29-2009, 10:09 AM While Kate was away visiting in the 5th season on Petticoat Junction, she was temporarily replace by her sister Helen.

Since I'm the one who created this thread, yes, characters that had to be replaced due to actors/actresses deaths does count.
Another one I thought of and I can't believe I forgot about it:
Valerie - Valerie Hogan was replaced with sister-in-law Sandy Hogan.
treky 01-29-2009, 05:36 PM While Kate was away visiting in the 5th season on Petticoat Junction, she was temporarily replace by her sister Helen.
she was? I never knew that.
Furienna 01-31-2009, 03:01 AM On "The Cosby show", when Tempesst Bledsoe wanted to go to college, her character Vanessa Huxtable did too, so she wasn't seen much during the last two seasons. So to fill this void, her distant cousin Pam Tucker (played by Erika Alexander) joined the show.
Zoneboy 01-31-2009, 03:04 AM Since I'm the one who created this thread, yes, characters that had to be replaced due to actors/actresses deaths does count.
Ok, Thanks. :)
Zoneboy 01-31-2009, 03:26 AM The Waltons, Olivia left due to having tuberculosis and her cousin Rose Burton joined the show.
Hazel, George and Dorothy Baxter left and were replaced by his brother and sister-in-law Steve and Barbara Baxter.
Buffyboy323 01-31-2009, 03:44 AM 8 Simple Rules - Paul Henessey passed away, and was replaced by father-in-law Jim and nephew-in-law C.J.
OOliver 02-09-2009, 01:42 PM On the sitcom "Valerie", star Valerie Harper was 'killed off', and Sandy Duncan was brought in as 'Aunt Sandy' to take care of the brood, with the new title "Valerie's Family"...which was later changed to "The Hogans".
