I was looking over tv4u.com yesterday and found this gem of an old pilot:

Daddy-O was a pilot that starred Don DeFore as a man chosen by a tv producer to star in a sitcom w/ a bumbling dad. DeFore plays Ben Cousins, a carpenter who wants to go back to being a carpenter, but the show's producer, Albert Shapian, played by Lee Philips, wants to keep him in the sitcom. Jean Byron, who would play Patty Lane's mom on The Patty Duke show in a couple years, played Ben's wife, who also wants to keep him on the sitcom. Although she isn't credited, that's certainly Sheila James, then playing Zelda Gilroy on Dobie Gillis, playing the character "Daddy-O's" daughter. This pilot gave a sort of inside look at how sitcoms were produced at the time, but it's hard to see how it could have gone past this episode. It's definitely worth a look.
