"The case that still vexes Moore dates back to her first year as deputy coroner. On Aug. 9, 1976, a young couple were found shot to death on a dirt road off Interstate 95 about 25 miles east of Sumter near the Florence County line.

A 1995 segment on “Unsolved Mysteries” and a probe by Court TV didn’t turn up any valid leads. Moore said she checked out every one of the more than 200 calls generated by the “Unsolved Mysteries” episode to no avail.

More recently, she talked to a Montreal newspaper and Readers Digest French, both of which printed stories about the couple, after receiving leads that they may have been Canadian.

“I wish we could find out who they were,” Moore said. “Not for my sake, but so we can send them home. There are two young people missing. It’s hard to understand how someone who knew them hasn’t come forward all these years.”
