TMZ Website Ridicules Actor-turned-Rapper Phoenix
19 January 2009 1:34 AM, PST

Joaquin Phoenix, who was nominated for an Oscar for his performance in the Johnny Cash biopic Walk the Line, has now adopted the persona of a rap artist, and his recent performances in Las Vegas, NV and Culver City, CA have been lampooned by the celebrity website TMZ. The website has posted clips of the nearly unrecognizable Phoenix, paunchy and bearded, clumsily imitating the gestures of hip-hop performers and being nearly drowned out by the noise from the crowd watching him. "The guy just quit acting to become a rock star," TMZ commented on the Culver City clip, "and if this freestyle disaster is any clue as to how his music career will go, let's just say it's DOA." As for the Las Vegas clip, it remarked, "The delusional former actor has given up a promising career for a Federline future" (a reference to Britney Spears's former husband, whose efforts to launch a career as a hip-hop star -- "K-Fed" -- never got past the starting gate).

Phoenix Blames Late Crew For Hip-hop Flop
21 January 2009 8:11 AM, PST

Actor-turned-rapper Joaquin Phoenix has blamed a tardy film crew for his lacklustre music debut - after shocking Las Vegas partygoers with a bizarre hip-hop show.

The 34-year-old unveiled a strange rap act at Sin City club Lavo on Friday night, when he performed three tracks from his forthcoming album, bobbing around the stage sporting an overgrown beard and unkempt hair.

The gig was reportedly recorded by Phoenix's brother-in-law, Casey Affleck, for an upcoming documentary tracking the star's new career in music.

But the Walk the Line star's show fell flat - ending with a red-faced Phoenix tripping and falling into the crowd.

A source tells the New York Post, "He was waiting for Casey Affleck and when the film crew arrived late, Joaquin flipped out."

According to the insider, Phoenix yelled at the crew: "Thanks for being late and f***ing everything up.'"

The source adds, "He came back five minutes later and did the sound check. Nobody can tell if he is for real or if this is all a big joke."

Phoenix announced his retirement from acting in October.
