Conan O'Brien says he doesn't plan to adopt a more conservative style when he takes over the earlier "Tonight Show."
“I think it would be a mistake to try and reinvent myself,” he says. “There’s this archaic idea there’s people at 12:30 and people at 11:30 and people at 11:30 could never comprehend things on at 12:30. I see things on MTV at 4:30 p.m. I would never want my children to see.”
“I will make tiny little ones or adjustments,” he says. “But I think the show just has to be funny.”
Inevitably asked about whether getting “The Tonight Show” still feels the same with Jay Leno moving to 10 p.m., O’Brien replies, “’The Tonight Show’ has been 11:30 on NBC, and that is sacred territory. This show has huge resonance for me. So, no, it doesn’t in any way affect the show that I’m getting.”
He then adds, “I don’t need any help diminishing ‘The Tonight Show.’”
Deals are still being made for his support staff, including his band, though O’Brien indicated bandleader Max Weinberg is likely on board along with the “core group.”
“I’m a Darwin guy,” he says. “I believe when conditions get tougher it gives you an opportunity to get better.”
