View Full Version : Update: Arthur Paul Beal

Here is an update on Arthur Paul Beal. He was the guy who turned up with amnesia and thought his name was "Tyler." Through UM, his family was located. Later, an update said he was wanted for stealing a truckload of food, but nothing beyond that. I found it curious that they blurred his picture on the update when he appeared in his own story earlier. (I thought that was odd.)

Recently, I received information from someone who was close to Paul. It was sobering to read and his life has taken a turn for the bad. You can read the rest below.

As a quick aside, I had made a post some months ago about this case and all I thought was weird with it (the lack of info, what the crime was, why his face was blurred, etc.). It was kind of a good life lesson for me when I got this update. Sometimes I get so caught up with these 15-20 minute UM stories that I forget these are REAL people, with families and their own private lives. When I read the update I could never have guessed all that went into it. It just got me thinking that even though I want more info to satisfy my own curiousity, I need to be respectful and never forget these are more than stories for my (and our) entertainment. [Todd climbs off soapbox.]

Here is the update:

You were wondering how things turned out for Arthur Paul Beal. It is not a pretty tale.

Bond was posted by his father at the request of his sister. His father also made restitution to the company for the missing frozen seafood and damages to their vehicle. All charges were dropped.

Paul disowned his father because he did not believe the amnesia story and has not seen or spoken to him since 1992. He created a new life and identity and goes by Tyler Beal to this day. He had 2 children and was going through a divorce at the time of his disappearance and he never bothered to enforce the joint custody that he was granted and only paid child support when it was garnished.

He moved to Northern California and became a bartender in Danville. He had two more children with his live-in girlfriend. In November, 2007 he had a heart attack at age 39. He sustained severe brain damage from the heart attack and is permanently disabled. He now lives in a facility and spends most of his days in a wheelchair [unable to do anything]. Some people have nothing but bad luck. His face was not blurred in the original episode. Perhaps it was done after the fact as a gesture of respect.

On a side note... he was "missing" for so long because no one cared enough report him as being a missing person. Everyone assumed that he was trying to dodge arrest and did not want to be found.

Paul was kind of bitter about how he was portrayed on the show and the only people that believed the amnesia story were his mother, step-father and two sisters. He became a sort of joke and did not like it one bit. Whether or not he ever did have amnesia remains in question.

There was a newspaper article about his heart attack and recovery. The full article (with picture) can be found here. (http://www.danvilleweekly.com/news/show_story.php?id=622)

I wonder if the vascular/cardiac issues that led to his heart attack could have been a contributing factor to a case of amnesia.

Oh my goodness! It's sad to hear what that poor guy went through and that he's now confined to a wheelchair. I've always realized that these are REAL PEOPLE being portrayed in UM. I've never took it as "entertainment".

Todd did the person who knew Tyler mention anything about his memory? When and if it came back?

Hey, UMfan -

I wasn't trying to sound like I was ripping on anyone. In fact, I was only cutting down myself. I know they are real people, but what I was trying to say was that I forget sometimes there is a lot more going on than what we see in the show. Many times we get a limited or slanted view of the facts and then sometimes I (or perhaps, "we") draw conclusions based on that.

I just wanted to say that I feel bad in this case that my wanting to know the outcome seemed to overshadow the person in the story who was actually suffering quite a bit. That's all. :)

Didn't say other than most people seemed to think the whole amnesia episode wasn't real. I think after that APB didn't want to discuss it much with anyone. I did find it interesting that he kept the name "Tyler." Almost gives credence to his believing the amnesia was real, otherwise he could have picked a totally new identity that had nothing to do with his original self or the amnesia self.

I will say, when they show him getting the call from his mom on UM during the update, I thought either the amnesia is real or he was a hell of an actor.

But then again, I've been wrong before. . . ;)

I got this PM 6 years ago from someone claiming to be Tyler's ex-wife.

Hello,

I am Steph and the ex wife to Mr. Amnesia aka Arthur Paul Beal. There is a very good chance that he faked his amnesia because he made numerous mistakes after he was "found" but just like how many licks it takes to get to the center of a tootsie pop... the world will never know and I am amazed that anyone even cares. As side note I saw The Cars in concert in the early 80's. The opening act was The Motels.

I figured I'd share it because it really doesn't contain much other than they never really knew with 100% certainty if he was faking it or not.

Why does everyone think that I sound bitter? I had the misfortune of marrying a con man then I tried to keep the children from realizing that their father was a fraud. I now know that the kids always knew the truth about their father and they assumed that I believed his stupid stories. He faked amnesia.

I just got to thinking about it and it is rather suspicious that he supposedly had plans to grab the children, leave their mother (the live in girlfriend) behind and move to Montana but had a heart attack before he could enact his plan. Also the mother of those children is currently living with a fellow that there were rumors of her sleeping with before Paul had his heart attack. This has the makings of a Lifetime movie. I want Jodie Foster to play me.

Honestly, I didn't think it sounded bitter. I just think it sounded like someone who didn't particularly believe his story.

If you don't mind me asking, what happened to his mom? The segment filmed her bailing him out and reuniting. Were they able to repaired their relationship?

Wow this story really is sad this guy was a total con. Even lied straight to his mothers face. I always thought it was a con and actually funny as paul looks like an idiot in the story. After reading his ex wife’s comments I’m convinced it was an act. Too bad his life spiraled even further the after story is even more interesting.

Welcome!

"Tyler" is one of my favorite UM segments, even though I think we've generally accepted the Amnesia segments are, for the most part, crap. As a child, I believed him completely. As time has passed, I've found his story less and less plausible. I do feel for his mother in this situation. She obviously cared for him very much.

Sorry to hear about his current situation, but it doesn't sound like he was a very good person. I don't think his ex-wife sounded bitter, but even if she did, doesn't she have a right to be? Guys who don't pay their child support are scum. Either way, I never believed this guy had amnesia. He was just looking for a way out of his responsibilities.

I majored in psychology, and I'm a semi-pro actor, so the case fascinates me. Yeah, I believe that he faked it 100%. The reaction to the hospital staff alone was wholly unrealistic-- you might freak out for 5 seconds, but you will eventually realize that they're just hospital staff who are questioning you. I believe that he probably freaked out for minutes at a time, as the show portrays. Hilarious.

But as other people noted, the performance that he gave when he received the news from UM that his relatives had contacted them and when he called his mom is Academy Award worthy. I think that he believed that his life (avoiding incarceration and other responsibilities through gaining sympathy) depended on premium acting. Obviously it failed in an hilarious manner. Do I even need to state that he is now possibly faking brain damage as well? Anyway.....

As his wife ex-wife stated in a different thread, when he is actually physically reunited with his mom the acting got very shaky, though.

I guess I am in the minority on this one because I have never for a second believed he was faking amnesia. The evidence people point too is the fact he was looking to evade prosecution and getting divorced but that to me could have been the trigger that overwhelmed him. I don't doubt he is far from a Saint but and never came across as very intelligent to the point to be able to fool UM or other experts.

Craig Williamson and other amnesia cases on the other hand...........

It's a familiar pattern, and it is not unique to this case.

1. Have problems, like everyone else (legal, marital, family, etc.)

2. Run away to another part of the country

3. Tell everyone you don't know who you are

4. Live off the charity of others (repeat #3 above as many times as necessary) until you've bled everyone dry

5. Repeat #3, but on television this time

6. Reunite with family and friends, but still say you don't remember

7. Live with the consequences of steps 1 & 2 above, but still say you can't remember.

This case is nostalgic to me, because I too remember watching it as a kid. I don't remember my thoughts on him back then, but I do believe now he was 100% faking it.

Which got me thinking this morning, since dementia in older adults is a common thing, I wonder if some of these cold case suspects will eventually find themselves with dementia or Alzheimer "diagnoses", after justice catches up to them. Seems like a pretty good way to avoid questioning.

Amazing because you don’t hear about amnesia stories anymore. I think UM was a platform sometimes for people who were so self absorbed to think ‘hey I can go on tv and plead my case and out of pity I’ll be exonerated’

Has it been confirmed on this board that he actually died? Some people speak about him in the present tense, and some of him in the past tense.

I did a little facebook snooping myself and found a family member located in the Danville area (where that article originated, and the person I found's name was mentioned in the article). They did post a picture of Tyler five years ago, wishing him a happy birthday, and thanking him for the memories. Most of the responses were condolences, so I safely believe he is no longer with us, judging from the tone of the responses.

I think I just imagined him being in a nursing home. It seems like his life might have been laughable at one point, but he possibly got his life together following the UM debacle. RIP.

I couldn’t find an obituary online. I think he is still alive but in a very bad state so they probably refer to him in the past tense. A family member said after his heart attack he was basically in a vegetative state.

A little searching turned up this..

Some here will be happy to see his glasses appear to have gotten smaller.

At least, I assume that's the same guy? Things seem to match.. Interesting thing.. It says he was improving and out of the coma.

I mean, come on.. This has to be BS.. There's no way this is the same guy. THIS paragraph in the story.

Beal is speaking now - slowly recounting memories, said Peterson. She said he still doesn't know who she is, but she tells him every day.

Seriously? There's just no way. Someone's gotta be yankin' our cranks.

Someone who is better at recognizing faces than I am. Is that the same guy?

I found another article that Beal is apparently still the General Manager at Meenar.

Just saw this Arthur Beal UM S04 segment for the first time. This is one of the few segments that I honestly find genuinely funny. I did admit to buying into the amnesia "bit" in the beginning, but as time went on it became evident that AB was making the whole thing up to avoid being prosecuted for the frozen food theft. He was obviously full of crap.

The scene showing him watching the UM segment on the couch w/friends & profusely sweating cracked me up, as did the later scene when he was arrested. The interchange between him & the LE officer went something like:

"I've had amnesia for 9 months" - AB
"If you've had amnesia, how can you remember how long you've had it for?" - LE officer

Bump! I saw this segment again today. I'm Camp Fake. Like his ex who commented, I was married to a conman too. The expression on Paul's/Tyler's face when he claimed not to remember his mother reminded me so much of when my ex was creating one of his stories. I know it sounds funny to people, but if you've seen the look, you recognise it.

I think some people truly believe that they can fool anyone. Some lie so often that they don't even realize it and get caught in their conflicting lies.

That's not bitter sounding and even if you were you had a d right to be. I'm only going by what the show portrayed but the mere fact that his mama was on there babying him like he was 10 years old gave me more insight than a crystal ball. I could tell that she probably undermined his father's authority in his early years and this is the result of it. Him feigning illnesses and other lies. Men that run to their mamas have psychological and emotional issues known as mamas boy. Girl I know you don't miss any of that mess. Hope you and yours have recovered and are doing well!

He didn't exactly "run to mama." He said he didn't remember her and didn't react to her the way he used to before his amnesia. Also, she bailed him out of jail. So no, he didn't "run" to her in any literal or figurative sense of the word. The mother could have been over protective of him (much like the helicopter parents of today.) Then again, by the time the segment aired, how many months had he been missing? You can't really blame her. I can't and I'm not even a mother!

Reading the (alleged) ex-wife's claims, I don't know if "bitter" is the right word. Perhaps she's just someone who grew to hate her ex and could never completely get past what he did? I could say her fault for picking the loser. I could also say "like attracts like." Sometimes people just change after they get married?

Who knows.

But now everyone is convinced he 100% faked it. You know, there were other amnesiacs on UM who weren't running from anything. They weren't criminals with warrants out for their arrests. They just "woke up" somewhere and had no clue who they were. They were eventually reunited with relatives who were thousands of miles away. I'm sure everyone's convinced those people were 100% telling the truth.

Right?

right.

This is all so fascinating. I saw the UM segment for the first time tonight. I believed Paul and I thought he was one hunk of a cutie back then! Anyway, I feel deeply saddened for him and his family. With the utmost respect, I have written a poem I’d like to dedicate to Tyler.
“ In shadows deep, a tale unfolds,
Of Arthur Paul Beal, a story retold.
Through misty veils of amnesia's sway,
He became "Tyler," his name at bay.

On screens of Unsolved Mysteries' gaze,
A soul adrift in memory's haze.
His kin found, through the show's embrace,
A family reunited, in a mystic space.

A stolen truckload, a past unclear,
Charges dropped, a twist sincere.
A life anew, a father's bond betrayed,
"Tyler Beal" he'd forever be portrayed.

Two children born, a life unwinds,
Divorce's grip, his past confines.
Custody ignored, child support remiss,
Life's rocky journey, a bitter twist.

Northern California's lands he tread,
Bartender's life, a new path spread.
Children two more, love's journey grand,
But fate dealt a harsh, unkind hand.

A heart attack at thirty-nine's door,
Left his life altered, forevermore.
Brain damage dealt, a wheelchair's grace,
In facility's care, he finds his place.

Faces blurred, in time's embrace,
A gesture perhaps, to show respect's trace.
Amidst life's shadows, his story bends,
A journey complex, where mystery ends.

Life's lessons learned, a truth to find,
Real lives behind screens, intertwined.
In tales we seek, let empathy bloom,
For those like Paul, in life's mystic room.”

lol...yeah I recently saw the segment on UM. It's blatantly obvious that he was either a conman pretending to have amnesia, or someone with mental health problems. My guess is that for whatever reason, he decided to "start a new life" and obviously invented the amnesia angle to avoid responsibility for his actions.

I read a post from his ex-wife, and it all but confirmed what I had suspected. The wife mentions that he talked about wanting to recover all the memories he once had, but conveniently did not make any attempt to spend time with his two young children, or contact them, once he supposedly "found out" he had children.

It just sounds like he was a man-child, who avoided taking any kind of responsibility his whole life. It's sad that he suffered a stroke at such a young age, and ultimately passed away, but I can't feel too much sympathy for him for the way he led his life.

This is all so fascinating. I saw the UM segment for the first time tonight. I believed Paul and I thought he was one hunk of a cutie back then! Anyway, I feel deeply saddened for him and his family. With the utmost respect, I have written a poem I’d like to dedicate to Tyler.
“ In shadows deep, a tale unfolds,
Of Arthur Paul Beal, a story retold.
Through misty veils of amnesia's sway,
He became "Tyler," his name at bay.

On screens of Unsolved Mysteries' gaze,
A soul adrift in memory's haze.
His kin found, through the show's embrace,
A family reunited, in a mystic space.

A stolen truckload, a past unclear,
Charges dropped, a twist sincere.
A life anew, a father's bond betrayed,
"Tyler Beal" he'd forever be portrayed.

Two children born, a life unwinds,
Divorce's grip, his past confines.
Custody ignored, child support remiss,
Life's rocky journey, a bitter twist.

Northern California's lands he tread,
Bartender's life, a new path spread.
Children two more, love's journey grand,
But fate dealt a harsh, unkind hand.

A heart attack at thirty-nine's door,
Left his life altered, forevermore.
Brain damage dealt, a wheelchair's grace,
In facility's care, he finds his place.

Faces blurred, in time's embrace,
A gesture perhaps, to show respect's trace.
Amidst life's shadows, his story bends,
A journey complex, where mystery ends.

Life's lessons learned, a truth to find,
Real lives behind screens, intertwined.
In tales we seek, let empathy bloom,
For those like Paul, in life's mystic room.”

 Brilliant!

Comedic gold!

Has it ever been confirmed if he passed away? I know he had the heart attack that left him disabled but I cant find an obituary online anywhere.

He'd only be around 55 now, so it's fully possible that he's still alive and could be for another 30 years, or more.

It's also possible he passed away and.. There's just no one out there to handle arrangements and he never got an obit. No idea what, if any, relationship he has with his kids or whether his parents are still alive.

I suppose unless his ex comes back and posts.. We're left with this.

That topic had someone who claimed to be his ex wife posting. No real reason to doubt it, other than the fact.. Well, it is the internet, after all.

According to her, he was alive as of 2017, which was 10 years after the heart attack.

Someone in this thread linked a newspaper of an article for the person who suffered the heart attack. It's just my opinion but I don't think the guy in the picture looks like him. But then as you said, his supposed ex says its him, so who knows...

Yeah, that was me.. I had found that and the coincidences were just crazy on it. The guy.. There was some resemblance there. And the name being "Tracy Beal".. Tracy being the name that he used while he had 'amnesia'..

If that really WAS him, and he was using the name "Tracy".. For me.. That would have been the end of it. I'm already convinced he was faking, but that would have been the nail in the coffin.

I had thought he was in a semi-comatose state after the heart attack. And.. Honestly, if that was the case i'd be wondering if he was faking THAT.

I trust this guy less than Andy Kaufmann.

You sound like someone who was with the wrong person and it's difficult to be nice about him. I speak the same way about some exes. Am I bitter? No. Am I regretful? Yes. If I could go back and never be with that ex I would, but it does not do anything else. There's no anger. You just wish you had never been with him.

As far as your ex, he's clearly a narcissist and it was obvious he was faking amnesia. The anger (or bitterness if you will) of not being believed is clearly the mark of a narcissist who has the brain of a child. Children get upset when you don't believe them. People who tell the truth don't care if you believe them because they know it's true. The police officer was wrong. He is not intelligent. An intelligent man would not have been stupid enough to steal a truck and then do something even dumber saying he had amnesia. He did Unsolved Mysteries to sort of turn himself in and not get in trouble and appear to be the victim. Narcissists love playing the victim to get all that victim attention. Narcissists are excellent at faking intelligence because he was likely around intelligent people and mimicked them. Once you start to really know them, they only have so much material and run out. You then see you are dealing with someone who has the mind of a child. I don't feel badly for what he is going through. The only ones I feel badly for are his victims and his children. There was a line by Dale Robertson in Tales of Wells Fargo that fits "Tyler". Those who think they are at their most clever are often easily fooled. I'm paraphrasing. He thought he was so clever and fooled everyone. He started going by Tyler permanently because he was so childish that he needed to be believed. He obviously had something going on with his father. His father was likely never there and he was raised in a house of women with no male there to show him how to be a man. Anyway, I hope you and your children are doing well.

I honestly would not be shocked if he is faking being a vegetable. Ironic since he stole a tuck of frozen vegetables?

RIP.

Thanking him for the "memories"? How ironic. He never got his life together. He was using everyone he could.

Bumping this one as I just recently saw it again. I believe he was likely faking as well, but then why go on UM and profile yourself? If he knew it was all a rouse, why bring attention to your case?

Narcissists love attention and victim attention is like candy. He also did it to appear more legitimate. A sane person would ask why he would go on tv if he was guilty and needed to hide. Narcissism is a mental disorder. H got on so people would say if he were guilty or faking, he would never go on tv.

It's called narcissism. Men who are raised by women get feminized and his outcome is the result. That's why boys need real fathers or a real male figure to raise them.

Amazing because you don’t hear about amnesia stories anymore. I think UM was a platform sometimes for people who were so self absorbed to think ‘hey I can go on tv and plead my case and out of pity I’ll be exonerated’

My 2 pennies

My .02 is that with cell phones and video and the ability to track people and social media, amnesia would be hard to fake these days. We can all Google. As stated multiple times in this thread, the guy made rookie mistakes. No one can keep up the act forever. All it would take is people posting pictures and videos online of this guy acting completely normal, and his story goes up in smoke.

What I could never understand is, if Beal was faking, why on earth he would bring attention to himself by agreeing to be interviewed? Narcissistic, yes. But was he really that stupid? Or that mentally ill?

I guess I could ask that question of every UM amnesia subject. Gigi was a hoax due to mental illness but that didn’t take long to confirm. Beal’s case is much more complex. I now dismiss them all except for the two from Canada, Pierre and that other lovely lady. I hope Pierre didn’t have a wife waiting for him though.

Just guessing here.. but I don't think he was looking for attention, but for sympathy.

I think he thought "Oh, if they think I can't remember anything, they'll feel bad for me and dismiss the charges"

It's the only thing I can think of that makes sense.. Even though.. it makes no sense.

Speaking of charges, that leads me to another question: What on earth happened to all that frozen food he “stole?” And why did he take it to begin with, was he interested in fencing chicken wings and broccoli?

I'm guessing he was too stupid to come up with the idea on his own. Somebody probably made him the offer to buy it and he accepted.

1991.. Perhaps a little late for the mob to be involved? had it been 10 years earlier.. I could certainly see him 'selling' the truck/food to the mob and.. Well, when dealing with them, probably better to claim amnesia than finger someone involved in the mafia.

No, but that would have given a better answer, or at least a better theory on the why.. IMO, of course.

Who or what could scare someone so much that they'd create and stick to such a BS story? The mob hijacking a truck of frozen food.. Also sounds legit like something they'd have been involved in.

But.. By 1991.. I think the mob had pretty much been run out of Vegas, so.. A decent theory that doesn't really match the timeline.

Him being found wandering in the desert.. Truck being found later with the cargo gone.. I mean.. There's pieces of that which line up.. But.. I don't really think it holds enough water to be a plausible theory.

Facing the consequences for the crime is a good enough reason, don't you think? He was clearly complicit regardless of who else was involved.

A crime that was dropped and completely forgotten about once restitution was made. To my understanding, he doesn't even have a criminal record, at least, not due to anything related to his 'amnesia'

If he was facing charges of stealing $25 Billion like Sam Bankman-Fried.. Ok.. Perhaps a little better understanding. But, the charges, if they even reached felony level.. Weren't taken all that seriously by anyone.

I also wonder.. We've always just heard "Frozen Food Truck".. I wonder if it was Schwans or something iike that?

If there weren't other factors.. I mean.. It takes a special level of stupid to overreact as much as he did if it was JUST over the food in the truck.

You're assuming that he realized it wasn't that big a deal. I would surmise that he thought it would be much worse than it turned out to be, ergo the reason for his silly attempt at a coverup. It's all guesswork, but that's my theory and I tend to be satisfied with that unless and until we ever get proper clarification (which we likely won't).

Is he still alive? Last I read, Paul suffered a stroke a little over 20 years ago and was placed in a care facility.
