CLEVELAND — The Cleveland Browns agreed to hire Eric Mangini as their head coach. The team confirmed the move on Wednesday evening.
Mangini was fired as coach of the Jets on Dec. 29, the same day the Browns dismissed former coach Romeo Crennel.

Mangini, 23-25 in three seasons with the Jets, has been the front-runner for the Browns job.

The 37-year-old began his NFL career as a ballboy with the Browns in 1994.

The team also has interviewed candidates to fill its vacant general manager position. Browns owner Randy Lerner met with Patriots GM Scott Pioli, but the momentum for Pioli joining the Browns has cooled.

He and Mangini, a former Patriots assistant, may have bitterness lingering from 2007 Spygate scandal that cost New England a first-round draft pick.

The Browns have sought to interview Ravens executive George Kokinis for their GM position, but they cannot meet with him until after the Ravens' playoff game in Tennessee on Sunday.

They wasted no time hiring him. I'll bet Romeo Crennel doesn't get a HC job that quick.
