I was watching one of my DVD's with a Ted Knight retrospective and saw the famous scene where he talks to Murray and Lou about needing variety in women, not being able to be with one. Then he interjects his famous methaphor, "if you're the Minnesota Vikings and you have great games against the Packers, you still dont wanna play the Packers every week...you need a little Chicago Bears, a little Detroit Lions"....and so on. Please help me find which episode this appears in. Thanks so much for your help!

A quick look at my quotes page (http://mtmshow.marvelous-grace.net/quotes.html) makes me think it's probably from "I Love a Piano," in Season 5. I haven't checked my tapes, so I'm not 100% certain, but that does seem to be the most logical answer. In any case, I do remember that line, and I can hear Ted saying it in my head.

Thanks. I haven't had a chance to get at my tapes yet to verify "I love a piano" is the episode in question with Ted's famous line. They are at my mother's and she lives 40 minutes away. I am going to pick them up this weekend. Hopefully I have that episode. I have the majority on tape and am only missing a few.

Season 5. That is one of my ALL-TIME favorites, and it's one of the reasons I'm so anxious for the season to be relased!

Ted even had a school song, sung to the Notre Dame Fight Song. Click here if you need a refresher on the Notre Dame theme:

Unfortunately, I do not have the episode "I Love a Piano". I guess I'll have to wait until the remaining seasons come out to verify Ted's famous line. Oh well.

I have the ep. Would you like me to verify it? I'm reasonably sure it's there, b/c I have a quote on my site that I believe is from the same scene/conversation.

It's fine. I take your word for it. I guess I'll have to wait for the season to come out, if that ever happens. No updated word yet as to when it's suppose to come out right?

ok, i bought bootlegs of seasons 5, 6, and 7 and am currently going through season 5. the famous ted lines are indeed from "i love a piano", written by the legendary treva silverman, and since many of you don't have season 5 yet (thanks, 20th century fox home entertainment) i figured i'd type of a few snippets of the dialogue from this great scene.
married murray is in lou's office to get advice about "buying a piano" from judith (fooling around with her?), and ted has barged in:

murray to lou: "what i have is wonderful, why do i want something different?"

ted: "can i interrupt? let me put it to you in terms you can understand. now let's say you're the minnesota vikings, and every time you play the green bay packers it's a great game. but that doesn't mean that's the only team you want to play...you don't want to play them every sunday for the rest of your life!...you need a little chicago bears...a little kansas city chiefs...[lasciviously] a little houston oilers!"

murray: "i get your point ted"

lou: "you not only made your point, you just listed the vikings' schedule of away games"

lou to murray: "so, you gonna see her again?"

murray: "well that's the thing, she invited me up to her apartment tonight"

ted (giggling): "her apartment? her apartment? well, end of discussion."

murray: "look, she wants to sell me her piano"

ted (moving toward office door): "a piano...in her apartment...after hours...after work...end of discussion"

murray: "look, i need a piano"

ted (at office door): "murray, take it from me. you don't want to play the piano...you want to play the houston oilers!"

the looks on lou and murray's faces as ted is going through his list of teams is priceless, and the audience is roaring, including the guy with the real distinctive laugh...it really is one of the best scenes in the whole series!

I still like the Sawakaki line that caused him to lose a bet to Murray. Too funny!!

actually, there were a couple of other classic bits in that same scene in lou's office:

ted to murray: "it's not the things you do in life that you regret, it's the things you don't do...i mean, in my whole life i have only one regret...jan. 8, 1964...i said to holly holmberg, i'm too busy tonight, i'll see you tomorrow. well, murray, there was no tomorrow...the carnival moved on."

----

and this, classic ted:

murray to lou: "i've been happily married for 18 years, why do i want to start fooling around now?"

ted: "listen murr, anybody married 18 years who hasn't fooled around isn't normal."

lou (loudly): "ted, i was married 26 years and never fooled around!"

ted: "oh 26, yeah, but not 18!"

Ooh, I don't think I've heard that "carnival" line before. Must've been a cut by N@N/TV Land *rolls eyes*. Yet one more reason to be excited for Season 5, whenever we see it! *Gives Fox mean stare*
