I think she did use spanking with Julie and Barbara when they were smaller,
especially Julie with her more rebellious and headstrong attitude. In the
last episode of the first season(the one where Ed decides to remarry),
after Barbara angrily says that she hates him, Ann gives her a stern
lecture on the all things that her father has done for her and Julie,
including a "good spanking when you girls needed it".
