This sounds like a silly-crazy thesis project, but my recollection of UM anytime a segment involved the state of Florida it involved a story of someone dumping bodies off the side of the highways. (Apparently there are a lot of highways in Florida, and no offense to people from Florida).

Anyone else ever notice a repetition of a particular crime in a state that caused you to think "gee people in ______ really like their guns(or something else)"


I know a lot of those wanted fugitives really like Oregon because they tend to flee there. :cool: wonder if anyone at my college is wanted.

I used to think that Montana, given its small population, had a propensity for mysteries- Patricia Meehan, the Bad Route Rest Stop murder, the disappearance of Dan Wilson, the murder of Father Kerrigan in Ronan. And, has it turns out, the Unabomber lived there.

By the way- I’ve been to Montana. It is a beautiful state.

one thing I've noticed is people tend to like their guns in most states. but aside from that now that I remember there were a lot of bodies recovered on florida highways(on the show). I guess I can't think of things that stand out. I guess you could go with the obvious....the 1980's trend of california bank robberies that were often profiled on the show. It seems like california had a lot of different segs. I know there were a lot of murder cases profiled in states like california, texas, even arizona now that I live here(those segments have caught my eye). a lot of bodies found in the abandoned desert and there is a lot of mystique showcased in the desert southwest. one thing I like about the show is that bob stack usually gave a couple of phrases to start the segment to give an intro to the location. I always enjoyed that part of the show. in some segments there was a lot of historic information provided for the viewer about the given location.

What about Colorado? You've had at least one or two of those milita cases take place there.

I've noticed that lenient gun laws in Texas don't seem to stop people from killing you.

In the Texas Teen Spree. One of the people they killed had guns and it didn't stop the kids from killing them and taking their guns.

Didn't prevent Patsey Wright from getting poisoned.

Didn;t stop Edward Harold Bell from killing an innocent person.

Ok as soon as you said Oregon, it grabbed my attention...so what fugitives were from UM captured here? Any theories on why the popularity of Oregon? I just seem to remember the crimes committed here from UM, but not the fugitives I guess....you know Jeremy Bright, Tommy Gibson, Sherrie Eyerly, Tyronne Theis (well he is wanted from Oregon)....am I missing any other Oregon cases? Who was caught here?

I forgot Michael Francke at the prison and the sports card theft from Medford, OR....

Yeah, Florida is a terrible state.

Anytime they depict a case happening in a rural area they use that country twanging banjo music in the background. I am bad at remembering names, but I think they used it on the case where Cheryl what's her name killed her mother and father (nicknamed Teak) in TN. She drove to the AL border and dumped their Cutlass into the river.

Also I think they used the same music in the case of the lady that disappeared in VA or WV where they identified the guy via his handwriting on a billboard. He had the steps of the crime written down and dropped the piece of paper in the yard.

They tend to depict the South all like that too, even though in reality it's not all stereotypical. I live in a city of around 200k with a metropolitan area of almost 500k. It's just another city in America like any other with some people carrying the regional accent and some not. You have the backwoods country people and your everyday families and any other type of culture.

Exactly. One of my favorites was the Dan Tondevold episode, where RS spoke of "old wealth" and "large antebellum estates" in East Tennessee like it was Alabama, or Virginia, or South Carolina---it was a neutral region during the Civil War! Not all of the South is backwoods and redneck (see Kenneth Engie segment), nor is it all remnants of Gone With the Wind. :lol:

I find, however, that the accents tend to stick a little better to Southerners on UM, even if they are in large metro areas. Same goes for New Englanders. It's the Midwesterners and Westerners that are harder to place.

By the way- I’ve been to Montana. It is a beautiful state.

I think Montana tends to attract the wacky (Montana Militia, Unabomber) because parts of it are still so rural and quiet. Montana is a place where if you want to be left alone, your neighbors will leave you alone. Privacy is a big thing here... if you're bored, you can check out our State Constitution. Right to privacy is a BIG DEAL out here.

Yes, Colorado is filled with wackos. Not just on UM but on A&E's Cold Case Files and American Justice.

texas does have a rep for being a gun state. obviously guns don't prevent the crazy types that are profiled on the show. when I moved to arizona upon my first visit to my barber shop I was shocked to see my barber packing a handgun in his pocket. I asked him about it and shortly after found out it is completely legal to carry guns in plain sight at a place of business. in all my years in texas I never saw something like that....

speaking of harold bell......I saw another bell on forensic files the other night. that was one psychopath as well....i wonder if there was any relation. he was the last man to be electro-blasted to death in S. Carolina.

He was sentenced to death for two murders and given the choice of electric chair or lethel injection. He choose the electric chair becuase he wanted to be executed "sacrificed" (his words) on a wooden apparatus as Jesus Christ was on the wooden cross. This is all reportedly why he choose the chair.
