I have to agree - WGN is turning into my favorite station! It's schedules just keep getting better and better every month. The daytime sitcom block is amazing, and so is the Sunday night block. What an amazing network this has turned out to be!

some good and some bad
the great news, I LOVE the timeslot upgrades and additions for Bewitched and Jeannie! :happyface After being preempted two of the last three weeks I was worried Coach and ALF were goners. Instead ALF stays and gets an additional slot. And while it will be missed from Sundays Coach is now in primetime on a night I didn't have much to watch. much better than USA treated it  the bad, 7th Heaven must have really bombed. Becker and AFV will be a big step down in quality. And the piece of garbage Scrubs gets even more good timeslots. It's a shame Corner Gas isn't working out.

Replacing the movie on Thursday in primetime this April:

WGN AMERICA ENTERS WWE RING WITH WWE SUPERSTARS

ORIGINAL PROGRAM TO AIR EXCLUSIVELY ON WGN AMERICA BEGINNING APRIL 2009

NEW YORK, NY and STAMFORD, CT, January 5, 2009--WGN America and World Wrestling Entertainment (NYSE: WWE) enter the ring with a new television partnership. WWE Superstars, a first run, original program will air exclusively on WGN America, Tribune Broadcasting's national Superstation.

The action-packed WWE Superstars, part of a new multi-year agreement with WGN America, will be produced by WWE and will feature Superstars and Divas from the entire WWE roster. The hour-long weekly program, scheduled to debut in April 2009, will provide WGN America viewers the chance to see Superstars and Divas from all three WWE franchises in one program. WWE Superstars is scheduled to air on Thursday nights at 8 and 11pm ET with an additional run on the weekend (Saturday afternoons).

"WWE is one of the great American brands on television and we are thrilled to announce our partnership. The addition of WWE Superstars to WGN America's lineup signals our intention to add more tent-pole programs to our network brand strategy. Going forward, we will play to win," said Ed Wilson, Tribune Company's Chief Revenue Officer and Tribune Broadcasting President.

"WWE programming has a tremendous track record of consistently delivering a diverse and advertiser friendly audience. We fully anticipate that WWE Superstars will be a ratings winner for WGN America," said Kevin Dunn, WWE Executive Vice President of Television Production.

"WGN America is a general entertainment network featuring original and syndicated series, major league sports including baseball and basketball, as well as theatrical movies. We are committed to delivering compelling, original first-run programming for our viewers and WWE Superstars is the perfect illustration of our strategy," said Sean Compton, Senior Vice President of Programming & Development, Tribune Broadcasting.

that's unfortunate, wrestling shows are nothing but garbage. it doesn't belong on a quality network like WGN :(

Well it's only a replacing a movie, no harm, no foul.

robyrob

the only thing I don't like is what they've done with Corner Gas - they should be airing the new episodes instead of rerunning the same old ones to death

What are WGN's plans for Super Bowl Sunday? Last year they aired a Corner Gas marathon. Outta Sight Retro Night hadn't premiered yet. The logical choice this year would be a Coach marathon. Also are they planning anything different for Valentine's Day?

Pavan
01-10-2009, 04:28 PM
As of now, there are no real plans for anything special for WGN America on Super Bowl Sunday and Valentine's Day. However on Super Bowl Sunday they are airing the movie Groundhog Day at 8-10pm ET and again at 11pm-1am ET.

Is Coach still moving to Wednesdays this week? Last week during their weekday shows WGN did a scroll each segment saying when they were moving to. But they didn't do that for Coach yesterday.

I was wondering will we be seeing Anymore Sitcoms Marathron on WGN America anytime soon.

icecream
03-05-2009, 11:36 PM
Does WGN only have the rights to certain seasons of ALF? Since they've aired it, some episodes have aired 4 or 5 times while several episodes are unaired. And I don't know why they're the same episodes on Sundays and Wednesdays. It's not like they're saving airplays since they're not in the same 24 hour period.

DSfan

I'm intrigued to see the sitcom weeks this summer as well as possible changes that you mentioned for September. Don't you all find it a bit peculiar, though, that they add a cartoon to a channel with no other cartoons and then put it at midnight? I would think a good idea would be to get 4-5 cartoons and put 2 episodes of each on a Saturday morning (Flintstones, Jetsons, Scooby-Doo, Bullwinkle) would be an example.

bliggenstrauff
03-12-2009, 11:12 PM
Still looks like a good schedule, probably the best thing on cable except for maybe RTN. I never liked Bullwinkle, but did anyone else do the Joey Gladstone impression of Bullwinkle when you read the news?

On Saturday, April 11 (the day before Easter), WGN has scheduled a marathon of Star Trek: the Next Generation from 12-4PM.

Pavan
03-30-2009, 03:03 PM
That's because it is preempted Tuesday that week. So they are airing the Tuesday episodes on Saturday.

Why aren't they rescheduling the Coach episodes that are preempted the next night?

Pavan
03-30-2009, 04:18 PM
Not sure, I guess they have to air the Star Trek: TNG episodes they preempt. Kind of like they have to air 5 Reno 911 episodes each week no matter what.

Wow! I've just been looking at WGN and they have become great. A shell of what it used to be....wow, a cable channel that actually changes for the better.

I have the Dish Network Family package and it doesn't have WGN....I can't for the life of me understand why. Except for several things it's ENTIRELY family-friendly. If you look at the channels that provides (TV Land, Hallmark, etc) you would think WGN would be riht in there. Pav, this is an odd question to ask, but is WGN expensive to carry? I can't understand why it's not in that package. It fits right in.

Scoobiedoo30

it's ENTIRELY family-friendly.I love WGN, and it carries a lot of great family programming, but they have their share of racier shows that aren't appropriate for families. Scrubs, Boston Legal, WWE Superstars, Reno 911, Bob and Tom, Steve Wilkos, and Nash Bridges

True. Poor choice of words. However, most of those are 'buried' (save for Scrubs) late at night or are just occasional, such as Reno 911 and Boston Legal. I doubt many 9 year olds are up at 2AM watching Steve Wilkos.
Heck, Dish considers Investigation Discovery "family friendly"....I beg to differ.

and we know Biography, TV Land, and even (gasp) Hallmark have had their racy moments. JMO.

i noticed they recently started seventh heaven over. i think that was a good move to put it on as one episode a day like it now. It spreads the show out and makes it last longer. is it going to be changing times in the fall? As mentioned before, Sister Sister is leaving at the end of June, with Moesha. I don't know if it's been mentioned, but Newsradio airs occasionally on WGN as a filler when needed after a movie.

How much longer does WGN have Reno 911 and Chapelle? They just seem a little awkward on there. They should get a more uniform late-night schedule...air Wilkos and Bob & Tom back to back and where Reno and Chapelle are airing put Newsradio or maybe Coach or something. Personally, I can't stand either one of those talk shows, but I guess they have obligations with them. They have made great strides though. Hopefully late nights will be sorted out someday. I have a feeling changes will be coming in July.

Don't worry about Hillbillies...it will return for sure. Stay tuned.

I can see them moving it, fine, but why remove it entirely? I know it's coming back, but it doesn't really make sense. They have enough of those "funniest videos" shows.

Yeah, I agree. If they still have the rights to it and are still wanting to bring it back what would be the point of removing it now. It's not even as if they were trying it out at a different timeslot or had something better to put in at 8AM. AFV won't get big time viewers there but that doesn't seem to be a concern. Does anybody know the reason as to why they actually removed Hillbillies temporarily like this?

Thanks for the info, but does anybody know when exactly?

Hillbillies will be relaunched. It won't make sense to air in that new slot now. You'll see.

Good! I hope it gets a nice slot alongside Bewitched and Jeannie. I really, really love this network. They have gone the absolute reverse of TV Land!!

Pavan, if you can't say anything I understand, but yes or no....is more classic TV coming to the weekday schedule soon (late summer, fall)? I know they probably have special marathons and things for the Retro Night coming, but some more classics in the daytime/afternoons would be great.

WGN America is airing a Charlie's Angels marathon this weekend in memory of Farrah. More details on that and more marathons/specials for Farrah:

We will have more on the blog tomorrow.

Great addition! It's been a while, so I'm definitely looking forward to tuning in on Sunday nights. The block of WKRP/Newhart/Barney Miller is a winner for me.

I'm thinking the anniversary in September is gonna be The Cosby Show, but I hope I'm wrong.

I'm glad they're adding it, but I guess I don't get why they keep adding shows and just air them once a week. Why not daily? They're definately better than those 'funniest this' or 'funniest that' shows..

WGN america has created a nice Sunday night block with the addition of Barney Miller. I appreciate the fact that they have started running full screen closing credits on the shows, too. I'm not a fan of the split screen or even the credits superimposed over the epilogues ala that other station whose name escapes me. Suffice to say, I don't consider it a "Prime" practice. ;)

I know you're angry catsrule, but they are buiding a late night block. See our story:

Are they ever going to lose those shows like Chapelle's, Reno 911, etc? They seem to want to be Comedy Central 2 or something (with Scrubs, South Park, those 2 I mentioned, etc).

I bet Becker will NEVER leave now. TV Land is starting to look a little better, I'd rather watch Roseanne.

Comedy Central has nothing worth watching, I want WGN to stay away from their worthless shows. :(

They are losing Chappelle's Show this fall, I believe. Reno 911 is only airing like 4-5am on some nights anyway, so what's the harm?

Reno 911 is only airing like 4-5am on some nights anyway, so what's the harm?Guess I just never got the point of these type shows airing there, along with even Bob & Tom and Steve Wilkos. Like I've said many times, their late nights are just sort of...messy.

I wonder when they'll air all of these new shows they're getting - probably 10pm-2am or something like that. I'm sure it costs a fortune, but if they're going to try to build a block and have South Park, they ought to attempt to get The Simpsons. That would give them something really special and exclusive. We talked about it going to TV Land, but I doubt, at least at this point they would be interested.

Sounds intriguing!!

Good to see something else come on from 9-10. 2hrs nonstop of Newhart was a little torturous last weekend (even though I sort of like the show).

My guess would be that the show is Silver Spoons, Taxi, or Laverne and Shirley.

Not impressed. I hate that The Honeymooners is leaving. Cheers is already on Hallmark 15 times a week....if they air 2 episodes once a week, it will take eternity to get through the whole series. I'm thinking this will be a weekday show eventually. I wish they would have gotten something else a little more oh wow.

Yeah, Happy Days would have been good. I don't think the 'retro' or current idea was in mind when they lost it, though.

I wish Becker would leave. It's been on there forever. They ought to replace it with Cheers.
