choose dancing to open the show? JMO, even when i was little i thought it was dumb and would ask what is the point to it. What was wrong with the first season opening showing the family out in a park playing? They couldn't do another family outing doing something else as years went on?

I have wondered the same thing myself. A family scenario like season one would have been much more fitting. Although, Season 1's montage of still shots is still a little strange; especially Denise's transition from smiling to serious. The most unusual beginning for me is the one with the Caribbean theme. At least the formal attire opening had the feel, "We are a well to do and cultured black family" feel to it. The grandiose, Indiana Jones style music to the Caribbean setting just made no sense.

I liked the dancing too. It is part of the show. It had gotten to the point that we waited for it each season.

You mean the 5th season opening, don't you? Well, that's my least favorite one. It's like it doesn't make sense, like the other openings do. But ironically, my favorite opening is the one, that came after that one: The one with the Apollo Theatre sign.

Interesting post. I have thought about where the idea of the dancing came from, but I also agree with what ThomasE said. After awhile, I looked forward to what they were going to do with it from season to season. My son when he was 2 years old, would dance to it as Bill Cosby did so I do have a soft spot for it because of that. :-) But, the introduction used for season 1 was honestly not very good, kind of bland. It was just the first season though, but it still really wasn't very good. My least favorite of the introductions revolving around dancing was the one used for the last season. I read during the credits that the wall set as a prop behind them was a mural created by children, but to me it looks almost like grafitti which I don't think meshed very well with The Cosby Show. Also, I thought the music used for that introduction was too trendy. My second to last ranking of the introductions was the Apollo opening, and I thought the Caribbean theme, I guess you could call it, was a little much, but I came to like it after watching it show after show. My favorites were just the simpler dance introductions where Bill Cosby is dancing with each member of the family. Overall, I think the using dancing is honestly a little big-headed a choice to use for the show, and I think Bill Cosby is great. But after awhile, I got used to it and saw it as part of the culture of the show. The whole show is kind of set in that matter, but like I said earlier it is still a bit much.
