ROGERS, Ark. – An Arkansas woman has given birth to her 18th child.

Michelle Duggar delivered the baby girl by Caesarean section Thursday at Mercy Medical Center in Rogers. The baby, named Jordyn-Grace Makiya Duggar, weighed 7 pounds, 3 ounces and was 20 inches long.

"The ultimate Christmas gift from God," said Jim Bob Duggar, the father of the 18 children. "She's just absolutely beautiful, like her mom and her sisters."

The Duggars now have 10 sons and eight daughters.

Jim Bob Duggar said Michelle started having contractions Wednesday night. She needed the C-section, her third, because the baby was transverse. Jim Bob said both baby and mother were doing well Thursday night.

"We both would love to have more," he said.

The cable network TLC broadcasts a weekly show about the Duggars, called Seventeen and Counting. Chris Finnegan of TLC – which handles public relations for the Duggar family – said the show's name would be updated to account for the latest addition to the family. He said TLC also will air a show Monday on the baby's delivery. The Duggars have also had a book published recently.

Jim Bob Duggar is 43, a year older than his wife. Their oldest child, Joshua, is 20.

The other Duggar children, in between Joshua and Jordyn-Grace, are Jana, 18; John-David, 18; Jill, 17; Jessa, 16; Jinger, 14; Joseph, 13; Josiah, 12; Joy-Anna, 11; Jeremiah, 9; Jedidiah, 9; Jason, 8; James, 7; Justin, 6; Jackson, 4; Johannah, 3; and Jennifer, 1.

"Our whole family is excited about Jordyn's addition to our family," Jim Bob Duggar said. "She's just perfect in every way."

It's amazing that this family can care for so many children when so many people out there can't handle one or two kids. Too bad they couldn't have adopted Caylee Anthony.

It's wonderful that these kids are well taken care of and everything, but personally, I just don't think it's right, I mean women weren't meant to have litters. I'll probably get a lot of flack for this, but it's just the way I feel.

A lot of people don't agree with their lifestyle (myself included). It's easy to have 18 kids when the mom isn't really in charge of them; after 6-8 months the baby is passed to one of the older kids who must feed the baby, plus help them with their schooling and other activities.

I do like the new baby's name though (Jordyn). It's a cute name IMO. :)

Could you clarify what you mean by saying that women weren't meant to have that many kids? Do you mean that the way women are built makes it dangerous or unhealthy to have that many children or something? I'm just not sure what you mean when you say "weren't meant."

3 c-sections means she shouldn't be having anymore that way. I thought the limit was 3. And I mean, if you have more babies, you can't guarantee it will be able to be delivered naturally.

It's the religion that they follow (they're Quiverfulls (http://quiverfull.com/)). Quiverfulls believe in Creationism, don't use birth control, and wear very modest clothing (right down to swimsuits (http://www.modest-swimwear.net/)). The wife must be submissive to her husband, and the children must be submissive to their parents.

Why is it that there are people on this board that are so down on the
Duggars? I think they are just a large family with a lot of love in their hearts.

Here's the sarcasm coming out--apparently they also believe in exploiting their situation on national television. Yea, I'm sure this is what God has in mind.

Are you sure they're actually exploiting it though?

I don't know much about them but they seem like a nice family. Different, certainly, but not bad people.

There are probably quite a few people who watch their show and find it heartwarming and inspiring. That's a good thing.

I do believe in God but I no longer really believe that God Himself has a plan for each person. I think our entire life is up to us. I also think that we have alternate selves existing in alternate realities. To me, it's more about our plan than anything else. I don't believe God is judgmental either, so I certainly don't believe he would have a problem with there being a TV show about their lives.

Yes, they love each other, but how much time can you spend with each individual child when you have 18?

I'm sure they find plenty of time... VERY restricted internet usage, not allowed to watch much TV, everybody was or is homeschooled (I'm guessing Jana, John-David and Jill are done with school too -- Josh graduated from school at 16), they all eat meals together, and can assemble their own musical group (all the kids that are able to, know how to play an instrument).

I do NOT agree with ANY of their beliefs at all (Creationism LOL) - however, I have tremendous respect for the Duggar parents. They are clearly doing something right, as far as kids' behavior goes in public, and the buddy system seems to be very effective.

Yes, I'm sure they have a great family life, but if it were me, I'd rather adopt 18 of the children in this world who are starving to death and have no one to care for them.

Yeah...there are too many people in this world as it is. Take care of the ones we already have. Nothing wrong with wanting to have your own children, but 18?

Besides...I just can't help but think that some of these children may end up with psychological problems, mainly from being forced to raise children so early. I could very well be wrong, but that's just my perception.

Pro-choice works both ways. This couple made a decision to have a large family. This adoption argument makes no sense. They want their own kids. I've seen shows on this family's lifestyle, and it's not as if they're working the kids to death. They all have daily chores. I had chores growing up. Buddy system, good way to put it, Allison. The Duggars are happy and are doing it on their own. They are an outstanding and loving family. I don't see the harm in it. Spend a day in Family Court in a rough neighborhood, see the insanity and dysfunction that goes on in some families, and the Duggars will look better.

True, but it's said that a man often marries his mother while a woman marries her father, psychologically. In my case, it's actually true. My husband has some of my father's characteristics, like being a family man and a hard worker. I could never marry a man who was allergic to work. I'm like my mother-in-law in how I'm very domestic. I keep a cozy home, with the cooking, baking, holiday decorations, that sort of thing. I've seen pictures of her when she was younger, and we're the same type in looks, reddish blonde hair, big eyes, same type figure. Often a person will marry an alcoholic if their parent was one. That's tied into the low self-esteem that growing up in that environment creates. They don't think they deserve better.

I think we're the exception to the rule though as most people marry the opposites of their parents. It all depends, I guess.

OH Nuts!
12-20-2008, 11:07 AM
It's hard to imagine a family with 18 kids running relatively smoothly but their family seems too...true the vast maj. of people would not want to have soooooo many kids but the Duggars are into it....and it seems to be working for everyone in the family...so...more power to them! In their own way they're kinda cool.

Sharop
12-20-2008, 03:55 PM
Yeah...there are too many people in this world as it is.

I have a possible solution to that. One of the New Age beliefs is that people create their own realities with their thoughts, beliefs and emotions and that if you think about something for long enough, and fully believe and expect to get it, then you will eventually attract it to yourself.

It probably only seems to people that the world is overpopulated because they keep thinking that. (They're creating their reality.) So if people change their beliefs and start believing, "The world is not overpopulated", then they'll attract that reality to themselves.

Seth, a spirit channelled by Jane Roberts from 1963 until her death in 1984 went deep into this subject in the book The Nature of Personal Reality.

Sharop
12-20-2008, 03:58 PM
I just don't.

By why, exactly?

I can understand the "world being overpopulated" argument, although I gave a solution in my previous post - combating it by changing our beliefs, as we create our own realities.

Surely as long as the family can afford to make sure their own children are healthy and well cared for, then it doesn't matter that they have so many? If their kids were ill and miserable then I'd agree that the parents shouldn't have had so many since they obviously couldn't handle the responsibility, but it seems to work for all of them.

Agreed, I can't see any logical reason to condemn the Duggars. I'll save that for idiots like Casey Anthony who would rather party than care for her own child or the countless parents that leave their kids in hot cars each year or leave them in a bathtub to drown or the couples who aren't fit to have kids and use them as punching bags or worse.

Nobody said you didn't have that right, I personally can't see any reason to dislike them and as a matter of fact, I happen to admire them. When the Duggars show me a reason to dislike them then I may change my mind but until then I'll save my contempt for a certain beotch in Florida.
