I cannot believe how MTV went from being like the coolest channel on television to quickly becoming total CRAP!!!! Remember back in the day all they did was show these really cool music videos?! Then around the late-80s/early-90s they started with all the documentaries about artists and all the "Sex in the '90s" programs! Shortly after, the "Real World" premiered and that was when MTV really went down the crapper! In 1997/98 they premiered "TRL" which planted the seed for some of the crappiest music in the world...Spice Girls, Backstreet Boys, 'N Sync, Britney, Christina, Jessica, ect. Then they started only showing videos during "TRL" and not even good videos, not even the entire video and all they'd show in entirity are all these lame reality shows and "Jackass"!! Now, it's turned into the friggin' Disney Channel!! No...one minute it's Disney with all the stupid Miley Cyrus/Jonas Brothers/Hilary Duff S**T....then it turns into "Braindead Spoiled Rich Kids Who Do Nothing But Sit Around And Act Stupid" hour with "The Hills" and "My Super Sweet 16"!!! It's a miracle they still have any MTV Video Awards these days with the lack of videos they play anymore...and the only videos they do play are by these untalented Disney bimbos....or Coldplay, possible the CRAPPIEST band on the planet with the world's UGLIEST lead singer!!! Seriously, whatever happened to just playing music videos without all the pseudo-drama?!?!?!?! VH1's even worse with all their "Celebrity BURNOUTS in Rehab"/"The Fabulous Life of PATHETIC CELEBS"/"Some Washed Up Rock/Rap Star's Attempt to Find Miss Right"/"Why Celebrities Are Anorexic"/"Why Celebrities Are Bulimic"/"Why Celebrities Are Drug Addicts"/"Why Celebrities Are Alcoholics" and then they show s**tty movies we can watch anytime on cable!! Even VH1 Classic is crap now because when they do anything music-related it's always about Heavy Metal or Hip Hop!! And the only time they show videos anymore is crazy early in the morning, then they only show Heavy Metal videos one minute, then a bunch of crappy programming featuring a bunch of has-beens the next, then they start with a bunch of crappy movies...I mean, how many times can we see the true story of The Temptations already?!?!?! And why is it the only "Behind the Music" episodes they air are about Pantera and Ratt?!?!?!?! They need to learn that not everyone who watches their station (IF anyone still watches their station) are Metal-heads!! SHEESH!!!!

MTV, CMT and VH1 have gone downhill in the past few years. MTV owns the other two channels which also show crappy reality shows. I do like to watch True Life on MTV because there are some interesting topics. VH1 Classic is still ok. The only music channels I like is Fuse for hip-hop, alternative, rock and pop and I like GAC for country music.

MTV died as a music network around 2001 or 2002, because that's around the time when everyone stopped watching TRL and all the shows started to suck.
I hate how they completely stripped the morning videos from the network and replaced it with that FNMTV garbage this summer.
I read somewhere that the reason why in the US we don't see videos is because MuchMusic up in Canada actually has exclusive rights to show new videos and this is why VH1, MTV2 and Fuse can only show a limited run of videos during the day. Much's contract is supposed to be running out soon, so we may see a change.

I used to love TRL when Carson Daly was still hosting, I used to love the Real World (I stopped watching regularly after San Diego). Now I only watch it when I happen to catch The Hills. I can't believe when I was nine years old I would have to fight with dad to watch this channel. I feel bad for the people that remember this as a music video channel only, this really has to suck.

That was the only time it was worth watching so please don't feel bad for me. When the original VJ's were dumped and Viacom hired idiots like Pauly Shore, Kennedy, Jesse Camp etc.. I knew the station was ruined. The only thing added to MTV that I could even remotely tolerate was Beavis and Butthead and Daria.

MTV was intended to be a 24/7 music video channel but they turned out like TV Wasteland and other new channels. They promoted themselves as one thing and then slowly pulled the rug out from under everyone and turned into a piece of crap. At least I had the foresight to record all the stuff I wanted and can watch it anytime I want on dvd or online.

MTV is sort of my guilty pleasure. the shows on there are terrible, but they're so terrible they're actually entertaining to watch...like that Parental Control show. serioulsy i crack up every time i watch it because its so obviously staged lol

^I feel the same way. The best show has to be "Next!" with their cheesy rhymes..

"Time to get stepping...
because I'm not messing
with that staph infection...
NEXT! http://www.sitcomsonline.com/ubb/icons/icon2.gif"

I remember hearing something like that once. Fuse plays more videos than MTV and VH1 though. I agree remember back in the early 00's MTV was ok and they had good mix of videos and other shows. MTV used to have good music related shows like Fanatic, BioRhytm, and Diary.

Diary was so good, I don't see why they stopped producing them. I had totally forgot about that show until I saw the documentary they did on Britney. It reminded by of a two-hour Diary.

I didn't watch all of the Britney doc but I agree it reminded me of Diary too.

This network has been dying a horrible death for decades. I stopped watching it waaay back when. Do they even show any music videos anymore?

M(usic)T(ele)V(ision) no longer exists. MTV must stand for something else now. M(ighty)T(iresome)V(irus) perhaps?
