The Life of Sally Rhodes

Starring Meryl Streep as Sally Rhodes, a 50-something divorced daughter, mother, and grandmother who works for a successful advertising company in Boston. Sally's family is quite hectic and crazy. Her ex-husband, Tom Rhodes (Ted Danson) left her for Sally's slightly older sister, Susan Reeves (Diane Keaton). Susan and Sally's relationship has always been lacking that certain sisterly bond, mostly due to both of their competitive ambitions and similar characteristics which annoy each other. They tend to be so much alike it makes them not tolerate the other sister. Also, all their lives they have been pinned against each other to win the love and affection of their boozy and quite loopy mother, Celia (Cloris Leachman) who uses guilt trips and sarcasm as part of her daily tasks. Also, Sally's relationship with her (and Tom's) only daughter, Valerie (Candace Cameron Bure) isn't much to brag about. Sally didn't approve of Valerie getting married at age 19 to a guy who was 30 at the time. Valerie and her now husband of the past ten years, Matt Jacobson (James Denton) have one daughter, Mackenzie (Elle Fanning). Tom and Sally have a 23-year-old "opps baby" son, Chandler Rhodes (James Lafferty) who is living with Sally presently, in her basement along with his live-in girlfriend, Rochelle Stevens (Isla Fisher). Rochelle thinks of Sally as a mother-figure while her own mother left her at age 4 to pursue an acting career.

Ep1: Pilot Episode:
Sally sets off alone on a road trip by herself to visit her late father's gravesite to celebrate his 35th year of his passing. Sally's relationship with her father was really close, and it breaks her heart that no one else in her family is willing to go with her and visit the gravesite for him. Celia claims she has "moved on", Valerie and Matt are busy with work, Susan "doesn't have time", and Chandler is working off a hangover. While driving, Sally recaps her life and everyone in her life.

Ep2: Love And Junk:
It's Valentine's Day, and Sally becomes annoyed with how lovey-dovey all the couples she runs into are. Tom and Susan plan a romantic getaway up north for the weekend. Valerie and Matt have a romantic dinner at home while Mackenzie spends the night at a friend's house. Chandler takes Rochelle out to an elegant fancy restaurant. To Sally's enjoyment, each couple experiences a little bump in the road. Tom and Susan get lost and have a little spat over who's fault it was for getting lost. Valerie and Matt end up bickering over how much Valerie spent on her new dress for the evening, plus Mackenzie comes home early after a fight with her friend cancels the evening. Chandler and Rochelle's reservations get lost and the restaurant becomes overbooked, they must suffer a long waiting time causing them both to become impatient and starving.

Ep3: Exes And Uh-Oh's:
Tom asks Sally to talk to Susan into forgiving him. Sally grudgingly agrees to it until she finds out that Susan asked him to marry her and he laughed at her. At first, Sally is irate to know her own sister is wanting to marry her ex-husband with no remorse of stealing him away from her in first place, but then Sally and Susan have a heart-to-heart chat after their feud, which ends in Sally and Susan calling a truce and end up Tom-bashing. Elsewhere, Rochelle gets surprise visit from her ex-boyfriend, Jacob (Bret Harrison) who has just recently been released from rehab after a failed suicide attempt (that Rochelle feels responsible for). Jacob's presence back in Rochelle threatens Chandler and makes him has his suspicisions about Jacob's true intentions.

Ep4: Dinner Party Disaster:
Valerie and Matt decide to host their first dinner party. All is going well until Celia shows up incredibly drunk and berates Sally and Susan in front of all the guests, Chandler's jealousy towards Rochelle's newfound friendship with Jacob causes him to explode during dinner on Jacob, and Valerie's cooking turns out to be less than extraordinary.

Ep5: The Fight Night:
Tom and Matt bond over a boxing match on pay-per-view, meanwhile Valerie buttheads with Mackenzie over her newfound preteen attitude. Elsewhere, Rochelle confronts Chandler about his jealousy and rage, which causes tension in their relationship. Jacob's innocent intentions begin to become suscipious to Sally too, after overhearing Jacob and Rochelle having a conversation in the basement.
