View Full Version : I Want A Hippopotamus For Christmas
Penny Lane 12-13-2008, 12:29 PM Are any of you familiar with this song? It is being played frequently on our local radio station. At first I thought it was stupid and annoying but now I love it! It was recorded in 1953 by 11year old Gayla Peevey. It has become quite popular around here!
Want a Hippopotamus for Christmas
Words and music by John Rox
As performed by Gayla Peevey (1953)
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
Don't want a doll, no dinky Tinker Toy
I want a hippopotamus to play with and enjoy
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
I don't think Santa Claus will mind, do you?
He won't have to use our dirty chimney flue
Just bring him through the front door,
that's the easy thing to do
I can see me now on Christmas morning,
Creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise
When I open up my eyes
To see a hippo hero standing there
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles, no rhinoceroses
I only like hippopotamuses
And hippopotamuses like me too
Mom says the hippo would eat me up, but then
Teacher says a hippo is a vegeterian
There's lots of room for him
In our two-car garage
I'd feed him there and wash him there
And give him his massage
I can see me now on Christmas morning,
Creeping down the stairs
Oh what joy and what surprise
When I open up my eyes
To see a hippo hero standing there
I want a hippopotamus for Christmas
Only a hippopotamus will do
No crocodiles or rhinoceroseses
I only like hippopotamuseses
And hippopotamuses like me too!

Wreckless 12-13-2008, 08:06 PM Kind of a weird, odd subject and song lol but I still enjoy it somewhat. I haven't heard it much this Christmas. Although on all the stations out in Jersey playing Christmas music, they have a lot of Christmas song countdowns, so I might hear it then ;).

What do you think of "Which Way You Goin', Billy?", which he recorded with his then-wife Susan under the name The Poppy Family?
