View Full Version : Question About A Warranty On A Computer (Laptop Computer)
Wreckless 12-10-2008, 08:53 PM My 1-year warranty is up December 26th, basically at Christmas, in two weeks. I need to send out my laptop to get it fixed. I waited 'til the last minute like always and now I'm screwing myself and making a mistake. But I'm thinking about an extended warranty. For anybody, like robyrob or anybody else that can answer this. If I buy an extended warranty for the laptop (a Sony VAIO brand), around how much will it cost in general? I don't need an exact price but around how much do extended warranties cost on (laptop) computers in general? In addition to that, if I bought an extended warranty, would I still be able to send my laptop in, to get it fixed? I want to send it in so it won't cost me any money to get it fixed, but I wonder if it will be alright if I buy the extended warranty and THEN send it in to get fixed. I need as much input or info on this matter as possible, or what you have to say. Anybody?
Thanks.
robyrob 12-10-2008, 09:18 PM extended warranties usually cost anywhere from $150 - $500 depending on the length of the warranty and extent of coverage, things like accidental damage and in-home service are obviously going to cost a lot more than just an extension of your basic coverage.
if you have a problem with the computer that needs to be fixed you need to call them NOW, before your warranty runs out - you can still get the extended warranty afterwards, but don't wait to get a current problem fixed or they may deny any future claims or coverage.
Waterston_Fan 12-10-2008, 10:55 PM I bought a Toshiba laptop 2 years ago and the warranty expired. Can I put another warranty on it?
I didn't think of it but I want to get a free battery for the laptop.
Wreckless 12-10-2008, 11:26 PM Thanks for the info Rob. What about stuff already on the computer? Say I package up and mail the laptop off to the Sony labs- are they gonna clear everything completely off (movies I have on my computer, music, files, pictures etc.)? I got an external hard drive off of ebay but I haven't got it yet. It's really cutting it short, especially if they clear everything off the computer.
I have flash drives that I can put SOME of the stuff on their. But then again my flash drives aren't letting me hold to it's maximum capacity for some reason. I have so much music on my computer as well, it will take up A lot of space on multiple flash drives. What should I do about all that?

most extended warranties can only be purchased before the original warranty expires, and most accesories (including batteries) aren't covered for the full duration of the original warranty - read the fine print, because some companies only cover the batteries for 90 days.

they may not wipe the hard drive, but i would assume that they will - for some companies the standard policy is to reimage the hard drive (wiping everything on it) to bring it back to its original software state to fully test the hardware.
you could invest in an external USB hard drive - they come in really handy for backing up, and you can get 1 Terabyte drives for about a hundred bucks if you shop around
Wreckless 12-10-2008, 11:53 PM the external hard drive is what I got- I'm pretty sure it and all external HDs come with a USB cord. What if the external hard drive doesn't come and I need to ship the laptop? Should I just buy like 10 flash drives-lol? Seriously though, I already have 2 Flash drives but like I said, they also won't max out to their maximum space, for some reason.

cross your fingers and hope it shows up in time - or find a way to copy stuff over to another computer, network transfer, easy-transfer cable, or even use free online storage options
do you have a bunch of files in the root directory of the flash drives?
create sub folders and move ALL of the files out of the root - there is a limit to the number of files that you can have there.
Wreckless 12-11-2008, 02:32 AM Yeah, hopefully it does show up. What about these online storage sites, are they legit and any good? The only thing I can think of, if I have to ship the computer out before the hard drive gets here, is to get flash drives. What online storage sites are their?
Sorry I'm asking so many questions. Everything that can go wrong, has gone wrong with this computer and with me and electronics in general, haha.
