In sports, one of the most common things heard is that certain teams are loved or hated.

We football fans on this sports chit chat area have certain teams we don't like.

It's been established that Solomon hates the Eagles, I hate the Giants, wreckless and iggles hate Dallas, Ramona hates the Cardinals, and so on.

But what are the reasons that we hate certain teams? What exactly makes a team so hated?

Titles? attitude? Always being on big TV slots/networks?

I read this old L.A. Times article from 1985 about hating the Cowboys (it also mentions Notre Dame football, but there are few college football fans here), and it intrigued me.

I'll paraphrase the article:

If you do not like Notre Dame or the Dallas Cowboys, this was the greatest football weekend ever. It was like having your cake and eating it, too. It was like having a genie grant you two football wishes, and saving the third one for some local high school you hate.

If CBS television instituted a new weekly series in which different teams got to defeat Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys on a regular basis, it would receive the highest Nielsen ratings since "Roots." You could put anything up against it, even Bill Cosby, and nothing would top it.

For as long as I can remember, there have been no two football teams that make opponents foam at the mouth the way Notre Dame and the Dallas Cowboys do.

No matter where I have lived in this country, I have discovered that the one common denominator that binds football fans together is the ability to root against the Cowboys on Sunday, no matter who they are playing.

To hear that the Chicago Bears took care of America's Team-44-0!-in Dallas!-is to hear that your lottery number has come up, that gas has come down to 50 cents a gallon, that the common cold has been cured, that Cary Grant is going to make another movie. It is something you have always wanted, and it will last you for at least a week, when the Cowboys play again.

Yes I hate Dallas....But that hatred is frail in comparison to my hatred for the stinkin roach giants...My hatred for the giants goes back many many years....Back to when I was 6 years old actually.... I hate the Eagles, the Redskins, Giants, 49ers and Steelers. I think I always will. Right now I probably hate the Eagles the worst mainly because they've dominated us the last decade. I also have never forgotten the old days of Buddy Ryan...that's when my real hatred for that team came from.

The Redskins are the Cowboys biggest rival but I'd put them second with me rigfht now. That can always change depending if we start having some real meaningful games again. I've hated them the longest. My hate for them goes back to the George Allen years and really took off in the 80's when Gibbs was their coach. I hated them the most back then.

The Giants would be next. I really didn't like that team in the 80's when Bill Parcells was there.

The 49ers I will always hate. It started with the Catch and I will never forget that. The Cowboys and 49ers had many big games in their history and even though the 49ers are bad right now, I don't feel sorry for them one bit.

The Steelers are the only AFC Team I really hate and it goes back to those SB's in the 1970's. That's never changed.

I hate Dallas, I can't stand their fans- America's team? Bullsh*t. I don't like Tony Romo, T.O., Wade Phillips, Crayton- most of the guys they have now but mainly those guys. Don't like the Giants and Mets as well. Mets fans try to get their way all the time, especially in their ballpark on every call.

I'm in a love/hate relationship with the Raiders. They suck so bad, the way they've been playing.

The Kansas City Chiefs: No matter how bad they are--it always seems they can beat the Raiders, usually in a close, hard-fought, scrappy battle. I don't really hate the Chiefs (it's more like admiration); they're fighters.

I'm beginning to realize I don't like the 49ers. They were great during the Montana/Steve Young--Bill Walsh days. Nowadays I think they're overrated. Around where I live most people are 49er fans. To me, rooting for them is more of a status symbol--the white-wine sipping crowd. They have a good game and everyone thinks they're the best thing that ever came along. Last weekend (it surprised me actually, that they won). I was watching the game during the 3rd quarter on TV. One holding penalty right after another; one dropped pass after another. I got so disgusted I turned off the T.V...Next morning on the radio, the announcers are praising them and Mike Singleterry up and down, like they're the greatest team in history. Give me a break!

You're getting personal. Guess what. Solomon isn't fat. I have recent pictures of him. He's 6'4" and a big guy, but he's not fat. He also has a nice apartment, and I've seen pictures of it. He's a college educated professional who wears a tie to work every day and has his own office. He lives alone. He doesn't have two or three roommates and he doesn't live with mommy and daddy. So there you have it.

If you don't get off his ass, I'm suspending you, again. If I have to suspend you every week until you get it through your head that this Sport's forum isn't your own little nasty playground. Like I said, Solomon insults in retaliation. You have had a pathological hatred of Solomon since the day you arrived. Yeah, where did you post before? Care to share? Didn't think so. My friendship with Solomon has nothing to do with this. I have stopped many a gangup in my day. This year, I stopped one of the cruelest gangups I ever saw on this site, and I don't particularly care for the person who was being ganged up on. In fact, the ringleader of the gangup even asked me why I was so upset because, "You don't even like the person." As if that makes a difference.

I'd like to know why you don't like certain teams.

As a Patriots fan, I'm sure the Colts are high on your list.

I don't follow sports. I don't even know how to watch a football game, with all the rules and different things.

The Cubs. A lot of it comes from the fact that my dad hates the Cubs so I just grew up with Cub hate. :lol: However, I think they are a huge joke of a ball team. They can't do anything. Plus I dislike their fans A LOT. Don't like Green Bay either. Their fans are even worse. And I will never understand why so many people around here (not SO, where I live) are Packer fans. There are 3 other NFL teams in cities closer than GB, but they aren't Vikings or Chiefs or Bears fans. WTH?

Growing up in Buffalo, as a Sabres fan (still am, BTW!) I never liked the Canadiens or Bruins- they ALWAYS were knocking Buffalo out of the playoffs.

I don't like the Canadiens as well- Montreal is a weird place. They rioted after they won the first round of the playoffs last year- WTF.

I hate the Steelers, for obvious reasons and I hate the Cardinals because if you're a Seahawks fan, you're not going to like the Cardinals. It's sort of a one or the other deal.

I always thought Seahawk fans hated St. Louis, who ALWAYS played the Seahawks closely.


Times have changed. Since last year we've became more in competition with the Cardinals. It just depends on a teams improvement.

I still don't know why you have a problem with me not liking the Cardinals.

Seahawk fans shouldn't like the Cardinals, Rams or 49ers since they're in their division but since it's a fairly new division alot probably still don't like the Broncos, Charger, Raiders and Chiefs.

Everybody has teams they don't like, unfortunately mine happens to be one that you do like.

It's like that with this site's fans of the Eagles, Cowboys, and Giants- some guys love those teams, others hate them.

And that's totally fine with me. It just seemed like for a while you were upset with me because I didn't like the Cards- but I'm glad that miscommunication has been cleared up.

It's actually 12:37. Well it wasn't really a party, it was sort of a "hey this chick has beer lets go see if we can get some! (and literally "get some" :lol:). I guess they realized we're not giving away free beer... or a$$, so they left- LOL.
