For the last ten years the San Antonio Spurs have been the preeminent team in theNBA. Since 1999 the Spurs have won four NBA Titles behind the play of future hall of fame big man Tim Duncan, Tony Parker and Manu Ginobili. With Parker a Ginobili out, many in NBA circles felt as if the Spurs had lost a step on the rest of the league.

Parker and Ginobili each average, when healthy, close to 20 points per game. With Hall of Famer, Tim Duncan, there to do the dirty work, San Antonio once again finds itself among the premier teams in the league.

With the big three still in tact, and Mason emerging as a star, the Spurs will remain a beast in the Western Conference.

Tony Parker returning tonight

The Spurs are back at full strength.

An hour-and-a-half before tipoff for Friday's game against the Memphis Grizzlies, the Spurs announced that All-Star point guard Tony Parker, out since spraining his left ankle on Nov. 7, would suit up for the game at AT&T Center.

Parker suffered a Grade 2 sprain of the left ankle as he drove the baseline and left his feet for a shot attempt in the first quarter of a game against the Miami Heat. The initial diagnosis was for Parker to be out for at least four weeks.

Parker missed only nine games, and the Spurs went 7-2 in those nine. He scored a career-high 55 points, high score by any NBA player this season, in the Spurs' first victory, a 129-125 double-overtime triumph over the Minnesoa Timberwolves on Nov. 5.

Spurs coach Gregg Popovich reported last week that Parker appeared to be ahead of schedule for a return to action. The 2007 NBA Finals MVP has been participating in practice activity for more than a week.

Manu Ginobili, the Spurs' other All-Star guard, returned on Monday after missing the first 12 games of the season. Ginobili had off-season surgery to repair a left ankle impingement.

Did anyone watch the Spurs get beat by the Pistons last night? Even thought the Spurs lost I think it was still a great game. Lots of nice shots by both teams. Iverson is always entertaining. It looks to me like the Spurs need a basic lesson in team work. Look for the open guy and pass more instead of trying to be the hero so much.

His favorite team is whoever the Sixers play next. I never saw somebody who was more focused on a team or franchise losing, then having a team or a team they like win, it's on some Stan sh*t, it's totally weird. It's like he knows all the losses and everything- really weird.

WOW! Spurs won over Denver. Manu was incredible last night. Eash time he plays I see him getting better and better. I think Manu should win MVP this year.

Ginobili returning to form in win against DENVER

Manu Ginobili made his second start of the season and scored 21 points on 7-of-11 shooting (4-of-7 from downtown) with four rebounds, two assists, and one steal on Thursday.

Ginobili made some key 3-point shots but more importantly played 29 minutes tonight. Barring any unforeseen setbacks he looks like he'll be back to getting his normal minutes very soon.

Spurs-Mavericks Preview

The San Antonio Spurs know they need Tony Parker in their lineup to be successful. The Dallas Mavericks are quickly learning they need Jose Juan Barea in theirs.

Averaging 20 points in his first two starts, Barea will look to help lead the Mavericks to their fifth straight win and 10th in 11 games on Tuesday against the visiting Spurs, who are coming off a pair of blowout victories keyed by Parker.

While Parker has long proven to be one of the NBA's elite small guards, Barea barely played in his first two seasons behind Jason Kidd and Jason Terry. But with second-leading scorer Josh Howard and shooting guard Antoine Wright both sidelined recently, Barea has become a bigger part of Dallas' rotation, and he's made a convincing case to become a regular.

Barea had 15 points off the bench in a win over the Los Angeles Clippers last Tuesday, and was even better after joining the starting lineup for the next two games. He had 18 points in a 112-97 win over Phoenix on Thursday, and a season-high 22 in a 100-98 victory against Atlanta on Saturday.

Barea's 16 third-quarter points matched Atlanta's output for the period as Dallas (11-8) turned a two-point halftime deficit into a 15-point lead heading into the fourth quarter.

"It's just been great just being out there with the guys,'' said Barea, who had 24 total points in the team's first 12 games. "Winning has been the most important thing. My confidence gets higher and higher.''

Dallas has won nine of 10 games and is 7-1 without Howard, who averages 20.3 points but has been sidelined because of a sprained left ankle. Howard and Wright could both return against the Spurs (11-8), but even when those two come back, coach Rick Carlisle has seen enough to keep Barea in the crowded mix for playing time.

"I'm a believer that anything is possible,'' Carlisle said of Barea's emergence. "Would I have predicted it? No.''

Barea played only two minutes in the Mavericks' first meeting with San Antonio this season. Dirk Nowitzki had a game-high 30 points and Jason Terry 29 in Dallas' 98-81 road win on Nov. 4.

Parker had 22 in that contest, but suffered an ankle sprain two games later that kept him out for three weeks. He's been back for the past five games, and after the Spurs suffered ugly losses to Houston and Detroit, Parker has led the way to two impressive wins.

He had 22 points and eight assists on Thursday in a 108-91 win at red-hot Denver, then had 17 points and eight assists in just 20 minutes of a 123-88 rout of Golden State on Saturday.

"We've had two great games, and hopefully we can keep this going,'' said Manu Ginobili, who made his third start after returning from an ankle injury in late November. "We just tried to move the ball. It's the things we always try to do, but sometimes it doesn't work.''

Ginobili is averaging 13.6 points in 21.7 minutes per game since his return, and both he and Parker have shot the ball well. Ginobili is shooting 52.6 percent from the field in seven games, while Parker is connecting on 53.3 percent.

Tim Duncan, meanwhile, is averaging 21.3 points on 56.1 percent shooting in three games with Parker and Ginobili starting.

San Antonio split two meetings in Dallas last season despite woeful shooting from Parker, who averaged 10.0 points on 15.6 percent (5-for-32) from the field.

(BTW, I am not a Spur fan- can't stand those geezers- but I do like Mariah Carey (she STILL has a hot body at the age of 37, and a great butt as well!).

In my opinion age is just a number. I think the Spurs are not worried about age this year. The team is always changeing and we do have some new young players which helps keep the energy up. Last night was a great game. It went into double overtime. Spurs win!

Duncan and Parker Lead Spurs Past Mavs

DALLAS (AP) - Tim Duncan scored eight of his 32 points in the decisive second overtime, Tony Parker added 29 points and 10 assists, and the San Antonio Spurs beat the Dallas Mavericks 133-126 Tuesday night in the latest thriller between these Interstate-35 rivals.

There were six lead changes and three ties just in the overtimes, until Bruce Bowen nailed an open 3-pointer from the right corner off a pass from Duncan to put San Antonio ahead for good. It came with 1:47 left and it was Bowen's only points.

Dirk Nowitzki scored 35 points and Jason Kidd added a season-high 24 points, 12 assists and eight rebounds, but the Mavericks lost for only the second time in their last 10 games. They also ended a five-game home winning streak. The loss added to the misery on a day they learned Josh Howard, their second-leading scorer and rebounder, would be out indefinitely because of an ankle injury that's already kept him out of the previous eight games.

Dallas had a chance to tie the game at 127, but Erick Dampier -- a 58-percent foul shooter who was 4-for-4 from the line in this game -- barely made it to the front rim on his first attempt. He swished his second, but the Mavericks never recovered.

Duncan began stretching the lead with a short basket off a terrific feed from Manu Ginobili. Jason Terry missed for Dallas and Roger Mason got the rebound, then made a pair of free throws to make it 131-126. When Nowitzki missed a 3-pointer with Bowen flying by him, all the tension and doubt about the outcome was gone.

The Spurs won for the seventh time in nine games, and it was certainly a team effort. All five starters scored at least 13 points, including Matt Bonner going 5-for-5, with three 3-pointers. Mason scored 12 off the bench.

Duncan matched his season in points and grabbed 14 rebounds. Ginobili scored 18 despite shooting only 7-of-21. He was 2-of-9 on 3-pointers.

J.J. Barea continued his inspiring play for the Mavericks, scoring 21 points before fouling out. He had a fourth-quarter stretch of 11 straight points created, eight by himself -- including drives at Duncan and around Parker -- and a drive-and-dish feed to Kidd for a 3-pointer.

Reserve Jason Terry had 19 points and a season-high nine rebounds, but he also had six turnovers; he lost a ball out of bounds on the baseline with 1:31 left in the second overtime and Dallas down a basket.

The Mavs led by as much as 11 in regulation, and the Spurs by seven, but it was close throughout the second half. Consider this: Dallas shot 12-of-14 in the third quarter, made three more free throws than San Antonio and grabbed a few more rebounds -- yet didn't gain any ground. The Spurs went into the fourth quarter up by two, just like they had been at halftime.

Nowitzki tied it at 107 with 1:23 left in regulation, then both teams failed to score again, with Parker missing an open 21-footer just before time expired.

The Spurs had a great chance to close it out in the first overtime when Terry was called for a flagrant foul after taking Parker down hard from behind on a breakaway layup with 43 seconds left and San Antonio already up 115-113. But Parker made only one of two free throws, then missed a jumper on the ensuing possession. Kidd tied it on a 3-pointer with 19 seconds left, then Ginobili missed a layup with 1.1 seconds to go. After a timeout, Nowitzki threw up an airball on a 28-foot fadeaway while covered by Duncan.

Manu Lifts Spurs Over Hawks

SAN ANTONIO (AP) - Sometimes Manu Ginobili enjoys the thought of coming off the bench. It looks as if Wednesday was one of those nights.

Ginobili scored 27 points in a return to his sixth-man role to help the San Antonio Spurs beat Atlanta 95-89 for their fourth straight victory.

Ginobili, the NBA's Sixth Man of the Year last season, scored 14 points in the fourth quarter. He started for the Spurs (13-8) in the previous four games, including a demanding double-overtime victory Tuesday night in Dallas that was followed by the de-icing of the team's plane and a return home past 2 a.m.

"It was a tough back-to-back,'' Ginobili said. "He (Spurs coach Gregg Popovich) was thinking about it. So I said, 'Go ahead.' As I told you, sometimes I prefer coming from the bench, so no big deal.''

Tim Duncan, playing in his 1,000th NBA game in the regular season and playoffs, added 19 points and 11 rebounds. Joe Johnson led Atlanta (12-9) with 29 points on 13-of-20 shooting from the floor.

Ginobili was 8-of-12, including 5-of-7 from the 3-point line, and made six free throws without a miss.

Ginobili hit two free throws with 3:27 remaining after Mike Bibby and Al Horford were called for technical fouls for arguing Horford's foul call when the Hawks had cut the Spurs' lead to three points.

Referee Pat Fraher whistled the techs, and once Ginobili made the foul shots and the Spurs kept possession, Duncan made a short bank shot to expand that three-point lead before the techs to 83-76 after them with 3:13 left in the game.

"I didn't really say anything,'' Bibby said. "If saying 'Come on, man,' deserves a tech, then I deserved the tech. I've heard a lot worse get told to people and (they've) not got a tech.''

Once Bibby got the technical, Horford got whistled scant seconds later.

"I said 'What happened?' to Mike because I didn't know what was going on,'' Horford said. "You've got a tight game going on - a great game - and you're going to blow it up doing that?''

Ginobili hit a 3-pointer with 1:53 to go. Then, after the Hawks cut it to two on Johnson's short jumper with 54 seconds left, Ginobili cut through the lane for a wide-open layup that gave the Spurs an 89-85 with 32 seconds remaining.

"Ginobili made a great play,'' Hawks coach Mike Woodson said. "Overall, they made the plays when they had to.''

Ginobili made four free throws in the final 20 seconds to seal the win.

"Manu carried it for us,'' Duncan said. "He hit some big shots - obviously free throws down the stretch. He loves games like that. He loves situations like that.''

The Spurs led by as much as 15 points with 3:05 left in the third quarter. San Antonio was up by 11 with 9:53 left in the game before Atlanta outscored the Spurs 27-18 to cut it to two points with less than a minute to play.

Matt Bonner had 13 rebounds and the Spurs outrebounded Atlanta 52-27.

"Bonner came out and established himself off the bat, and then it was a long night for in terms of rebounding,'' Woodson said.

San Antonio has won seven of the last nine at home.

The Hawks stumbled through their trip in Texas 0-3. Atlanta has lost eight of the last nine on the road.

The Spurs didn't look like the tired team to start the game.

But the Spurs jumped out to a 20-8 lead over an Atlanta team that lost in regulation on Tuesday night in Houston. San Antonio had the 12-point advantage on Ginobili's 3-pointer 8:17 into the game, and the Spurs went up by 14 points with 1:12 left in the quarter.

San Antonio had a 20-8 rebounding advantage in the first quarter. Bonner, starting his fifth straight game, had four offensive rebounds and led the Spurs to a 9-2 start in second-chance points.

Bonner had seven rebounds in the first quarter, and Duncan was 4-of-5 for eight points in as many minutes.

The Spurs still led by 14 with 7 minutes left in the first half on another Ginobili 3-point shot.

Ginobili scored 11 points in 11 first-half minutes and was 3-of-5 from the 3-point line. But the Hawks scored the next seven to cut the lead in half and got as close as five after Johnson's bank shot made it 38-33 with 1:32 before halftime.

Spurs beat Thunder for 6th straight win

We are back with the NBA: the San Antonio Spurs grabbed their sixth straight win by beating the Oklahoma City Thunder 109-104. The win pushes the Spurs to the top of the Southwest Division.

The visiting Thunder had lost its last six straight games, and have the league's worst record, while the Spurs played one of their best games. The hosts led by 21 points after the first period, but their young opponents wouldn't give up.

They cut into the deficit little by little during the match. The Spurs went into the final quarter leading by 14 points, but the visitors continued to close the gap. The more-experienced Spurs held on, with Manu Ginobili's three-point play assuring the hosts' victory by a final score of 109-104.

Yeah the Thunder were not very hard to beat. Still, Spurs are doing good so far. ;)

One thing I will say about the Spurs- they do a good job against terrinle teams
(Rarely lose to the truly awful teams)

Tonight the Spurs play the Hornets that should be a good game.

Spurs BARELY beat woeful Memphis in 2 overtimes at home.

No offense, Monar, but I think the Spurs are more lucky than good.

IMO, they are likely going to be a fifth-seed at best, and I think they could be one-and done.

Parker, Duncan, and Ginobili can't win games by themselves.

The Spurs are getting older, but unlike Mariah Carey, are NOT getting better with age!
