mphs95 11-28-2008, 08:07 PM Woo Hoo! Having UM withdrawal.
colt45allstar 11-29-2008, 02:55 AM Hmm I wonder why both my television guide and the schedule on spike.com isn't showing all these Unsolved Mysteries.
It's showing CSI all next week in those time slots?!?
I really hope it's coming back on next week... but we will see.
I do see the first two episodes listed and the one at 1 PM on Saturday (though it appears to be a replay of one of the two segments)
The others don't seem to be listed... hmm
edit:
I got this same email awhile back... hopefully it's still accurate.. although it's not looking too promising.
hostedbyrobertstack 11-29-2008, 01:25 PM I'll be very upset if it's not on again this week after all the hype that it will be on. Spike is becoming much much worse than lifetime. I don't see the reasoning behind airing hours and hours of CSI where each episode is exactly like the last and the acting is horrible. However...one ray of hope is....For Friday night, spikes schedule said um was on at 1 am and 2 am, HOWEVER, UM actually started at 2 am, so hopefully these are all glitches
Mystery Lover 11-30-2008, 05:32 PM Well I have TIVO and according to it, there are NO Unsolved Mysteries episodes coming up. :-(
No clue whats going on. I too got that email about all the episodes coming up. But nope, I checked last night and none coming up in the next 2 weeks.
tygre 11-30-2008, 11:45 PM My guess at this point is we'll see it again after Christmas. I have no idea why they run umpteen episodes of CSI every day -- I can't stand to watch that show, myself, but that's more due to experience in the field and grimacing every time David Caruso opens his mouth than anything else.
I've never seen a network change its schedule as much as Spike seems to, either. I don't watch a hige amount of broadcast TV, but it seems strange and potentially expensive to change it as often as they have recently.
unsolvedmysteriesfan 12-01-2008, 05:15 AM I think Spike pulled it permanently. Probably got disastrous ratings. Maybe there is some way Unsolved can tell them to go to hell and go find someone else to carry the show, but we've probably seen the last of the show.
Sorry UM, I supported you.
robbieasbury 12-01-2008, 06:27 AM Maybe their re-tooling the show since it's not on. I too got Cosgrove and Meurer's newsletter e mail saying it was going to be back on. I hope it will be back.
crystaldawn 12-01-2008, 02:21 PM I don't understand. Those of us on their mailing list all got an email saying it would be back on this week, airing several times a day. It isn't on and isn't even listed as being on this week at the tv listings on Spike. You'd think the channel that owns it and is airing it would at least know when its going to be on.
synthisislab 12-01-2008, 04:41 PM How long did UM last on Spike TV?
crystaldawn 12-01-2008, 04:44 PM How long did UM last on Spike TV?
It started airing in mid-October. I don't think they're done airing it for good. I believe they bought the rights to air it for 5 years so it wouldn't make sense to spend that money to only air it for 6 weeks. I have no idea why they haven't aired it in a few weeks though.
sdb4884 12-01-2008, 09:14 PM What a load of crap. Well if we are going to wait this long for it they better make some big changes to the show!

Maybe they will air it as a web-only show??? Or just sporadically?
If they had 175 episodes, it seems they'd show them some of the time, even at 2 a.m. instead of yet another Sham-Wow infomercial.

You're kidding, right? They don't even have a prominent spot for the show on their website, and they've done ZERO promotion for it. They have shown an absolute lack of faith in the show.
hostedbyrobertstack 12-02-2008, 12:56 PM Yea, agree with the above.....They have done NOOOOOO Marketing whatsoever!!! the only time I have ever seen them mention UM when it wasn't on, is when they were talking about "Thanksgiving Marathon" which included UM< which NEVER happened. This show had such a long run and was such a hit because it was a GREAT show with great material. Obviously this show would do great on spike, the only problem is NO ONE KNOWS THAT IT'S BACK ON TV. Stop showing CSI, take some of the money you have made off of the adspace on that horrible show, and show some commercials for UM. Not that difficult, even if I weren't a marketing major.
robbieasbury 12-02-2008, 04:10 PM For some reason they did air it at 2:00 and 3:00 AM on November 28. I don't know how many saw it, but for some reason they didn't show the rest.
andreaturtle 12-02-2008, 05:20 PM Maybe more people would have watched it if it didn't come on so dang early. I always missed the 4:00 show and only got to see the last 45 minutes of the 5:00 show when they moved it so early.
crystaldawn 12-02-2008, 07:00 PM So all of use that are on the www.unsolved.com mailing list received another email today basically saying they don't know why its not being aired. They said they're still waiting on word from SpikeTV. Hmm, that makes me wonder if the future of UM on there may be in jeopardy.
foxtrot21 12-02-2008, 08:01 PM Spike seems to be the CSI Network now. :( I miss my UM, I watched it even thought it scared me a lot, lol!
Does anyone know who owns Spike or if it is affiliated with other networks? Maybe they can put it on there--or on Network TV instead of some of the other junk out there.
robbieasbury 12-02-2008, 08:11 PM I think it's part of CBS and Viacom along with MTV.
foxtrot21 12-02-2008, 08:16 PM I think it's part of CBS and Viacom along with MTV.
So CBS should pick it up......they could use a ratings boost. :)
I received an email update from UM. The subject line was "Where's Unsolved?!" According to the email, they are waiting to hear from Spike regarding the scheduling plans. They expressed an apology for the situation. (Those of you who get email updates from UM have probably received this message yourselves by now.)
I give the folks at UM the benefit of the doubt, because I don't believe they intended for this to happen. Let's hope the scheduling issue is resolved very soon.
I doubt very much that the show will be leaving Spike anytime soon. They paid $26 million for the 175 re-edited episodes. That is about $150,000 per episode. The contract is for 5 years. I guess they can air it as often or as little as they wish. They paid about $1.6 million per episode of CSI in 2002.
I think it's just a matter of finding the right timeslots for it and sticking to them. Spike must have been trying to expose it to as many people as possible with 5 airings per day.
browneyes106 12-03-2008, 12:11 AM Maybe they are reworking the show. I hope they are. I hope if they bring it back it is a little bit better
Todd Mueller 12-03-2008, 12:27 AM Spike has screwed this up from the start. Other than agreeing to air the show, I think they have made a series of bad decisions. I still say "Any UM on TV is better than no UM on TV", but...
Farina is OK. Not great, but not bad either. However, the time slot sucked (IMHO), the fake telecenter is a joke, the "black box" effect is annoying, and the choppy, rapid-fire delivery really takes the soul out of the original. What made UM great was how the stories sucked you in. I remember watching it when it was on originally and after each one I wanted an update so bad. They are so fast now that it really never makes a connection to the viewer (at least not to me or anyone I know). They hardly advertised for it even being on Spike. A few commercials, but nothing on their website (which is a horrible joke in its own right). C-M still does a great job, but I can't say the same thing for Spike.
Hopefully they are either re-working the format and/or finding a better time slot for it.
But overall, as a die-hard, life-long UM fan, I'm really disappointed.

AGREE 100%
I wish they would just air the originals in order once per day, thats all we really wanted. Any time slot would be fine with me as I DVR everything. The new format just dosent hook me in.

This. There have been a couple segments where the new format punched up a segment which dragged a bit in the original but this is rare. The old segments would have been fine and cheaper for Spike to run.
I've got to admit I stopped watching. The old segments for me were tight 15-minute mysteries, filmed with extraordinary detail and a real eye for storytelling. You felt quickly immersed in the case. Now that doesn't happen.
dawnfla6aa2 12-03-2008, 02:55 PM I couldn't agree more. Just give us back our show!
crystaldawn 12-05-2008, 07:43 PM Okay the email sent out today says at the beginning it will be back on Spike in January. A few sentences down though they basically say they think it will be back on then. Sounds to me like they haven't heard anything from Spike and are just trying to guess and keep us informed.
sdb4884 12-05-2008, 10:19 PM Im over the new UM, they keep ****ing us around with their schedule and now I don't care for it anymore. Spike **** off for all I care!
alfiechat 12-06-2008, 08:55 PM I went to spike tv's website and under shows Unsolved Mysteries is not even listed. I sense major problems....
Old School TV 12-09-2008, 12:38 AM Im over the new UM, they keep ****ing us around with their schedule and now I don't care for it anymore. Spike **** off for all I care!
Unfortunately, to a degree I share a similar sentiment. Not to UM in general, but to the new UM. I don't think putting it on and off is good to keep and maintain the viewership interest on a show. In fairness, I think the show's ratings have been atrocious. The show was also taken off the air by LRW and Lifetime, even when there contract didn't expire. So it is conspicious that the overall viewership is not great.
I do think that the 12Am to 4Am slot has the best promise for the show. The bread and butter for Spike is that UFC stuff. Some of those fights have drawn a 3 to 5 share, and a few million viewers(3 to 4 Mill). UM is very different from UFC, so they won't put it on a time slot close to it. I think the graveyard shift maybe twice or three times a week is the best hope. Because they also give those Manswers shows which is a different demograhic, young sexually thristy men are not going to tune in to UM, it has to be a few hours after it. In addition, they also have two Star Trek shows they air; which are Voyager and Deep Space Nine. These programs although not as big as the original Star Trek, still have a more loyal and larger audience than UM, and these episodes air at night as well. Plus, spike also has late night movies as well which will compete with UM. As a result, I don't think everyday gravevard is likely, but maybe twice weekdays and one weekend. If they two hours each day, than 6 episodes a week is possible.
In conclusion, I think either very early morning 9-11AM or 2-4AM, maybe three times a week, is the ideal programming for UM in spike. But I guess I have lost some interest, and will check in with some of my old Stack UM collection when I need my fill.
DALLASTEXAN!! 12-09-2008, 04:59 AM to say i'm disappointed is an understatement. I was a tad disappointed at first glance. and I had not the time to watch more than one episode per day, so I allowed countless episodes to accumulate on my dvr. then I went out of town for a while and came home only to find out no further episodes had recorded. so I thought my dvr was full or perhaps spike had scaled down the show a bit. so I watched all of my episodes and actually started to enjoy it and farina had grown on me. even my son really loved the show and my wife thought the new version was better than the old...save the host. now I'm surfing the net and I find on wikipedia that the show has been canceled due to low ratings.:( I think this a great show that serves a purpose while providing suspense and entertainment. I like the fact that some of these mysteries are still out there waiting to be solved. get the right people watching and just like the old days....good things happen.
wiseguy182 12-09-2008, 06:27 AM UM will be back in some form because it's the show that never dies. :)
now if Spike would just air old cases, I have reason to believe that they are able to get their hands on some of those lost cases.
robbieasbury 12-09-2008, 07:20 AM Tell me it isn't so, I hope wikipedia is wrong and their not cancelling UM. Anybody have any more information on this?

Wikipedia is not among the most reliable sources, since it is known to contain misinformation. For this reason, let's wait until we get an official word on the status of UM before believing Wikipedia's claim.
Mastermind 12-09-2008, 11:31 AM I'm surprised that Tru TV never thought about buying the rights to Unsolved Mysteries.
I think it would be perfect for a network that has been struggling.
synthisislab 12-09-2008, 01:19 PM I wonder why A&E didn't pick the show up. That seems to be the only channel left that broadcasts true crime shows anymore. Does anyone know why A&E wouldn't want UM on their schedule?
malasmom 12-09-2008, 01:57 PM Unfortunately, the Production company has no control over Spike's show line up. The UM staff is extremely disappointed in Spike's decision to run CSI all day every day. Apparently, they spent a lot of money on CSI and the numbers were not as good as they hoped. Their perspective is that if CSI airs several times a day, it will find an audience, but the reality seems to be that people are changing the channel.
Spike has licensed Unsolved Mysteries for a 5 year run. They can decide to air it as much or as little as they like for the 5 year term. Hopefully after the first of the year, they will give it a nice home in a few different time slots everyday so all of the die hard UM fans can catch up on their favorite cases.
Even if you are disappointed that the show is not exactly the same as it was 20 years ago, let's remember the most important part of the show are the victims and families of those affected by crimes and tragedies. Hopefully once UM finds a regular time slot, we can continue to solve these crimes and bring closure to those in need.
Thanks for your continued support!

If the show is first and foremost "for the victims and family", then getting as many people to tune in should be an objective, since the likelihood of solving a case rises with the increase in viewers. Therefore, it is important to keep the show in a format and style that people actually want to watch. There's a fairly strong consensus among the show's longtime fans on this forum that the new version isn't up to snuff, with the missing dates, choppy editing, badly written and performed narration, and new music. I think the new host is marginally the least of the show's problems, and could be accepted if at least some purity of the show's original look, sound, and feel were retained.
Also, some new cases would be a bonus, although it's understandable if there no money for that in Spike's budget.

Thanks for the post. Is your company working to fix the problems addressed on this forum about what's wrong with the new show (since the show has been pulled for the time being)? I heard one of the major problems was fixed (the screen was cropped on the old re-enactments because of an inconsistency in aspect ratio). Another major one is the dates of the events being omitted and Dennis Farina acting like these cases were recent. Also, the show is trying too much to be like AMW now and many people are turned off by it. I know you guys probably produced all these episodes already, so there is probably nothing that could be done to correct the dates issue and how the show is presented. But I thought as a longtime UM fan (since pretty much the beginning of the show's run), you'd at least consider my input. Well, take care and thanks again.

by Mark Mc Quown MarkMcQuown@ForeverMail.com December 12, 2008 8.55am
The show has not been cancelled on Spike TV. I am the Art Director and we just finished shooting over a hundred new episodes in November and they will all be shown on Spike TV.
synthisislab 12-12-2008, 09:08 PM New episodes as in new cases?
crystaldawn 12-12-2008, 10:30 PM New episodes as in new cases?
I think it means old cases that they have reworked in the new format.
dragonlight 12-18-2008, 05:47 PM Wait a minute. If the Spike TV schedule is changing, what will happen to Star Trek: Deep Space Nine and Seven Days? I already know that Seven Days ended up on the Sci-Fi Channel, so I'm assuming that Star Trek: Deep Space Nine will end up on the same channel along with Star Trek: The Next Generation, correct?
browneyes106 12-19-2008, 01:11 AM I think will other cases that weren't covered in the previous Spike airing will be on this January.

very true words. and i apologize for spreading unreliable information which wikipedia is obviously notorious for in all aspects. I did not return to this site for quite some time, but the cancellation claim on wiki was swiftly removed just days after I originally saw it. I think the most confusing aspects is that to this day spike does not list UM on its show listings......that's what had me confused then and still yet. that's why I sort of wondered if that information(wiki) was valid. obviously the posts that followed on this thread confirm that spike is in control of the whole situation and can show whatever whenever they want. doesn't mean the show is dead.
foxtrot21 12-27-2008, 06:20 PM I checked my Dish network listings and it looks like we get a marathon on Friday January 2nd, and then episodes are back after that. SQUEE!
