After terminating a deal with 4Kids, an independent producer of children’s programming, the Fox network closed down its Saturday morning block of cartoons on Monday, and became the first major broadcast network to agree to sell a part of its schedule to producers of infomercials.

Fox executives said that children’s programming was simply no longer viable on network television — mainly because of competition from cable channels.

All the other broadcast networks still have children’s programming on Saturday mornings. One, the CW network, has a deal with 4Kids that is similar to the arrangement with Fox. As part of an agreement between Fox and 4Kids, the deal will be terminated as of January. The news was first reported by the trade publication Variety on Monday.

Fox is giving two hours of Saturday time back to its affiliated stations.

Like King of the Hill, this information was rumored as early as Spring 07, but the Fox animation department seems to be rather lazy actually setting action to the rumors they put out. This really is nothing new, I didn't think 4Kids actually did anything in the ratings and I haven't watched it since they stopped translating Sonic X in 2003 or 2004.

well there are certain factors why saturday morning cartoons are no longer a priority. its not just cable tv and dvds, but because the cartoons today, well most of them are just dire and not worth watching. no wonder people go on you tube and watch the oldies and buy classic cartoons on dvd- it's because they were quality. not the trash that passes for cartoons these days.

I used to watch and love the cartoons on Fox Kids. They used to send me those little Fox kids magazines, and I used to watch Power Rangers, Goosebumps, Beetleborgs and a bunch of others. Anybody remember all that? It was fun to get up and watch em on Saturday as a kid.
