Oh I hate that stupid thing! I just click the close button when I see it pop up. I tried to take that test once until I realized that it pulls you into something else. Good thing I backed out of it. Must be an advertising thing or something.

well, its easy to block in Firefox, much harder in Internet Explorer, but its best not to click on it...

Actually, every time I get on this site Microsoft Office 2000 starts trying to install itself. If you hit "cancel" it shuts down everything. Then a window will pop up asking if I want to continue running this script - I have to click on it to get rid of it.

It only happens with this site too. Good thing I like SO as much as I do, otherwise it's annoying enough that I wouldn't come back. I have to remain signed on too otherwise Explorer freezes and I have to "control / alt / delete" to close my internet sessions.

Aggravating at the least!

you might need to reinstall Office, or you coiuld try the Windows Installer CleanUp Utility (http://support.microsoft.com/kb/290301)

if you can find the IP address for the originating website or the script that calls it, you could add an entry to your Windows Hosts file and redirect it to the loopback address of 127.0.0.1 so that Explorer can't find the source.

Thanks - I'll try that cleanup utility dealie - since I've already tried reinstalling office a couple of times on this thing over the years. (this has been happening for 5 years - guess you could say I'm fairly patient!) lol

That is not a pop-up. The proper term is pop-under. I think they need to come up with better ways to block them. I don't think one "pop-under" every 12 hours is excessive.

I support the sites I visit. I don't use any type of pop-up/under blocker, ad blockers or anything else that would limit my abilities to help pay their hosting costs - no matter how annoying the ads may be. There will probably be a day when some sites block people entirely who use these types of blockers.

And that Microsoft Office issue is not certainly SO related, lol. 5 years and you are only mentioning it now? If you had asked for help in the past, I'm sure somebody could have offered you some assistance.

Thanks for the info but pop up or op under it's still annoying and it shows up more than every 12 hours for me. The ad causes no problems as far as navigating around the board is concerned and I suppose I could just as easily close the darn thing.

 I'm sure I've mentioned it in the past - and especially to my supposed "techy" ex, but just gave up on it. Kinda like a wart that you get used to ya know?

lol - I know it's not SO related!!! ;) Unless of course, Bill Gates is somehow out to get you TJ or hates television and thru my computer alone, built in something that shuts down and I've somehow saved you and the entire site by tolerating his crazy sh&t all these years cuz I'z luvs ya'll so much!

(ooookkkaaaay....I don't know where that came from!) ;)

I started taking that test but I had to stop because the questions were too hard.

I'd much rather it be a pop-under (never heard that term before... cool!), and although I did say earlier that I hate it, I'm so used to just closing it out that it's no big deal. I've never had any problems with SO except some really slow load times and sometimes I can't get it to come up at all. But that's most likely a problem on my end.

Adblock can't even keep this popup (oh excuse me, *pop under*) shut. The worst is those stupid Adobe Flash banners. Sometimes the "block" tabs don't even come up.

I have no problems with popups or pop unders as I use FireFox and AdBlock Plus and I can block ANYTHING I want <grin>
