View Full Version : Social Security Injustice
Jude The Obscure 11-01-2008, 10:53 AM Man, this is why people hate our government....My mom for over 2 years has not been able to work. She applied for her disability check, was denied, and had to appeal. Well she won that appeal and start getting her check as of last month. My stepdad has been on disability almost his whole life due to medical conditions since he was a kid. Today they get a letter stating that because my mom is now getting a check, they (SS) are cutting his check by over 1/2. TALK ABOUT INJUSTICE!!!!!!!! They will be contacting my mom's attorney and will fight this. Why should he get penalized because my mom is now getting the benefits she worked over 45 years for??? They are being punished for being married!!! No wonder so many people just choose to live together--the government hates married couples.
it makes me sick because I see so much abuse in my town alone with people who have kid after kid, keep getting more food stamps, WIC and more gov't help and yet, my mom, a hard working good citizen gets slapped in the face just for getting what she earned??
Now my mom is wondering if she and my stepdad will have to divorce just to get his benefits back.....*shakes head in disgust* *gives the bird to the SSA*
phoebe7165 11-01-2008, 11:20 AM Yeah, it just seems like anymore these days, the more you work, the more you get screwed!
I guess the government thinks they're doing you a favor by sending you a check but it's barely enough to live on while our politicians vote themselves pay raises!!
TripperFan 11-01-2008, 11:48 AM It's the same crap in Canada. My mom rec'd a survivor's benefit after my father died. Then she became permanently disabled, so in order for her to get disability, she had to give up the survivor's benefit.
In other words, in the eyes of the government, you are a widow or widower entitled to benefits because of that, unless for some reason you become disabled. Then, for some reason, you are no longer considered a survivor. It's not like we're talking huge money here - not even enough to live on with either benefit.
I've known many couples who ended up divorcing later in life only because of the government's rules. Meanwhile, they do that, and their wills and estate could be contested. crazy!
MonarC 11-01-2008, 12:44 PM My aunt was denied 6 times. My mother-in-law 3 times. They did finally get it but you have to fight, and I mean fight hard for it. Obama says he will change this and actually raise benifits. Let's hope so.
PunkyP0WER 11-01-2008, 06:07 PM i know how you feel jude. i see this injustice every day in my field of work. the honest working man is always the the one who suffers. i'm being sued by 2 hospitals because i didn't have the insurance for the longest time. we just got out of 40,000 worth of debt in august and i'm being sued by 2 hospitals for a combined amount of $5,000!. i only make $9 an hour, my paycheck is only $300 a week, i can not afford to pay these hospitals back and i'm not saying someone else should foot the bill but i applied for state insurance and was denied because i make "too much"!!! but i work in a shelter where these people milk the system for everything its worth and get grants for free education, free insurance, free food stamps, free rent and utilities. and i slave 50 hours a week just to live paycheck by paycheck and its only going to get worse for us as my husband starts chemo nov. 19!! the gov. is so backwards!!

Doodyville10019 11-01-2008, 11:00 PM OK, our government promotes the sanctity of human life yet does not promote people actually LIVING by letting a married couple get disability (or SS) benefits so they can STAY married.
What is wrong with this picture?
catlover79 11-02-2008, 04:52 PM I'm so sorry, Jude. I hope and pray everything works out for your mom.
Jude The Obscure 11-03-2008, 07:27 PM Well, my stepdad called a rep this morning and they agreed something is not right, so they are sending a form for him to fill out, so that the process of getting benefits restored can begin....man, what an asenine system!
catlover79 11-03-2008, 07:29 PM Well, my stepdad called a rep this morning and they agreed something is not right, so they are sending a form for him to fill out, so that the process of getting benefits restored can begin....man, what an asenine system!
Let us know how everything goes, Jude...I hope everything can be resolved soon.
Jude The Obscure 11-19-2008, 11:23 PM A rep from SS called my mom to say my stepdad will not get his benefits restored because he is on SSI, which is designed to supplement, not be the sole source of his income. Since she is getting her disability, she can support him!! CAN YOU BELIEVE THIS UTTER ASENINE SH**????? Then the rep tells her she can now file for food stamps......take away his benefits, but file for other benefits.......WHAT A FU**** UP SYSTEM!!!!
Chocoholic 11-20-2008, 11:05 AM It is a crazy system. It's sad when people know how to play the system and get away with it when honest people who truly need the assistance can't receive it.
Yeah, I know how you feel. I am disabled with a severe case of rheumatoid arthritis, and they denied me. I'm on my first appeal right now. In their denial letter, they stated that I can stand and walk two hours a day during an eight-hour shift. Which is funny, because here I was under the assumption that I can barely stand and walk two minutes without needing to sit and rest for awhile.
I have no doubt that I'm eventually going to get approved, but it might not be until I get a lawyer and a hearing.

You said it!
jasonbigley 11-20-2008, 07:05 PM The local place where I volunteer working bingo, we get so many people that are on welfare spending BIG amounts of money on bingo and tickets. What really burns me up is that many of these people are capable of working, they are just too lazy.
Michael Crowley had a article in Reader's Digest a while back about how people were cheating the system by trying to pretend to be disabled and collecting disability. This one lady got caught in Las Vegas. She was at a casino in a wheelchair. When the police closed in on her, she took off running!
Jude The Obscure 11-20-2008, 08:38 PM What irritates me, since I'm a grocery store cashier, is I see people pile up basketfuls of junk food--cakes, cookies, chips, soda, etc--they are as big as a house, but have no problem whipping out that old food stamp card for that stuff, but have plenty cash available to buy beer and cigarettes. The food stamp program is way overdue for an overhaul. It needs to be regulated like the WIC program, where people have a certain list of things they can get free from the gov't coupons. And NO JUNK!!
I'm busting my butt 40+ hours a week at minimum wage and see this fraud day in and day out, yet my parents are treated like sh** by the gov't.
Janice 11-20-2008, 09:45 PM I'm sorry your mother and her husband are going through this madness, Jude. My aunt and her husband have been living together for over 30 years. They both collect SS disability checks, and they never married due to this very issue. They have a 31-year old daughter who got married last year. When she got engaged, her fiance's parents invited her parents over for a dinner to meet them. I remember my poor cousin was so embarrassed because her parents weren't married. I told her to just tell her future in-laws that they were married. They were married in heart and soul, and that's all that really matters. I hope your folks don't have to get divorced over this. That would be a travesty.
