Say what?

Joaquin Phoenix dropped quite a shocker at a benefit for Paul Newman's camps for kids Monday, announcing his plans to quit acting.

"I want to take this opportunity ... to give you the exclusive and just talk a little bit about the fact that this will be my last performance as an actor," the two-time Oscar nominee told Extra at the San Francisco event. "I'm not doing films anymore."

"Are you serious?" asked the stunned interviewer Jerry Penacoli.

"Yeah. I'm working on my music," Phoenix insisted. "I'm done. I've been through that."

His rep confirmed the retirement to Extra.

The 34-year-old performer gave no further details on his career plans – but he has been working on a record for some time British band The Charlatans.

Phoenix, who costars in the upcoming romantic drama Two Lovers with Gwyneth Paltrow, first learned to play guitar for his Academy-Award-nominated role as Johnny Cash in 2005's Walk The Line.

He was also nominated in 2000 for his supporting role in Gladiator.

It'll be interesting to see if he really sticks with this decision.

Yeah, I have my doubts. He's rather young to be making such a decision. A couple years down the road he may decide he wants to act again.

"I'm working on my music."

I love that line.

Right now I'm working on my lunch, but you don't hear me blabbing to Entertainment Tonight about it.

I think he will be back in a few years.

how many actors are truly retired unless they're Sean Connery's age? Jamie Lee Curtis has retired about four times already, and she just had a new movie come out. Jane Fonda was retired for awhile and suddenly came back, etc...

I hope Joaquin changes his mind about retiring from acting. Maybe he's just lost the passion for it, so hopefully he can find it again...

and to think... I gave the man credit after Walk The Line for being able to separate himself from his character, unlike Jamie Foxx, who won an Oscar for Ray and suddenly couldn't separate him from the role he played in the movie.

a sobering reminder to all actors who think it'll be fun to record an album

shame on you Joaquin, you're 34, you're old enough to remember this. Miley Cyrus, Lindsay Lohan, etc... don't :lmao:

Ah the Return Of Bruno. What fun that was.

Didn't Keanu Reeves say a long time ago he was going to quit the movie biz and play full time with his band Dogstar?

well, June Pointer singlehandedly did save Respect Yourself from Bruce's non-singing.

I remember Dogstar. That was around the same time as Johnny Depp's band P, remember that?

More recently, Jared Leto's actually had a bit of success with 30 Seconds To Mars, probably moreso than his acting of late

As Run DMC puts it, "Don't call it a comeback!"
Actors, take heed of your words. You'll always come back.

I really like Joaquim, and hope he decides to come back to acting someday, but he does have a real talent for singing.

Oh yeah, he'll be back when he gets sent a good enough script! And if his music career isn't as successful as he would like.
