As previously reported (Sept. 26), Aretha Franklin has been covering Mariah's "Touch My Body" live in concert. On Wednesday, October 22nd, Franklin performed her rendition at Constitution Hall in Washington, DC. Below is a clip of her performance and an excerpt from Washington Blade.
And speaking of covers, the one jaw-dropping bombshell of the evening, which came completely out of left field, was a playful, sassy cover of Mariah Carey's uber-sexual "Touch My Body." Even with the famous "sock it to mes" in "Respect" and the moans and groans of "Dr. Feelgood," Aretha's only suggested sex before. This was the most explicit I've ever seen her but her raspy upper register sounded incredible on "Body's" flirty, hip verses and she milked the provocative chorus ("throw me on the floor/wrestle me around/play with me some more") for all it was worth while the band sashayed behind her with buoyant, cotton candy rhythms.
Aretha who, let's face it, is no small woman, made a crack after the song about moving from the floor to the bed for sex as the song suggests.
"As far as I'm concerned, what starts on the floor stays on the floor," she said to the incredulously delighted audience.
MusicJunkie 10-24-2008, 09:38 PM I do like Touch My Body, but the idea of anybody touching Aretha's body at this point in time puke: puke: puke: puke:

James"Thunder"Early 10-25-2008, 12:38 PM She sounded pretty good singing that, but I would have never imagined her covering that song.
MonarC 10-25-2008, 01:17 PM I think that is so cool. The queen of soul sings one of MC's songs. That is just too sweet. Id love to hear hear sing some other Mariah songs too. Like "Fly Like a Bird".

platinumblondelife 10-25-2008, 01:45 PM That's too much body to touch.
JK guys, I love you Aretha! I actually really liked her version of the song.
MonarC 10-25-2008, 03:50 PM Yeah she is awesome!

Aretha's voice is just too nasally now to pull off a song like that. Mariah herself could barely sing that song. The studio version is great nonetheless.
Schmoopie 10-26-2008, 11:11 PM It was hard to understand the words in that video, but she sounded great! Maybe she figured, what the heck? This is the 21st century and it's time to do something a little more bold than she has in the past! I'd love to hear a better version of her singing that song to get the full effect!

ekkostar 10-28-2008, 07:07 PM I think she added to it. Mariah's version was overly bland and glossy. E=MC2 was just a very dissappointing album.
Wow...I love Aretha. I always thought it'd be awesome if some of the big, older names did covers of current stuff, since many of the current names like to sing versions of the older stuff. I'd love Aretha, Patti LaBelle, Tina Turner, Dolly Parton, Barbra Streisand, Donna Summer, and even going further, with Connie Francis, Brenda Lee, and all of them, I'd love to see them all do an album together, each one taking a current song and doing it in their style, legitimately.
Tina Turner doing Amy Winehouse's "Rehab" would be incredible.

OUCH!

 Awesome idea!
 Awesome idea!
Isn't it, though? Tina would rock the hell out of that song.
I'm all for really mixing things up. Imagine...I don't know...Barbra singing "Bleeding Love" or Dolly singing Avril's "When You're Gone." They'd do amazing jobs.
