Have you ever seen a really good movie that is potentially ruined by a certain unnecessary scene, but over all the movie is still good?
Okay, I'm sure that doesn't make sense so here are a couple of examples...
The movie "Mrs. Winterborne" with Ricki Lake and Brendan Frasier. This movie was really cute for the most part but there are a few scenes that were really unnecessary and had I been rating this film, I would have deducted a "star". There is a scene where Ricki Lake is at the dinner table with her baby. Brendan Frasier and Shirley McClaine (who played his mom) and a priest are sitting there having dinner. The baby starts crying so Ricki says something about why she can't leave the table while she's breast-feeding the baby. I won't get into the details, but they use a certain word for breast, which I found to kind of lower my thoughts about the film. Especially when the other characters were clearly uncomfortable with Ricki Lake's character using the word. That's fine but then they keep saying the word over and over!
Another scene in that movie is when Brendan Fraiser admits something to Ricki Lake. It seems like he's trying to be nice about it, but she decides to smack him anyway! Their characters are supposed to be attracted to each other, so I thought this was a stupid scene to put into a supposed romantic comedy.
The other movie I was thinking about was "Serendipity" with John Cusack. There is a scene where Kate Beckinsale and Molly Shannen run into a friend of Molly's at a hotel. Molly's friend gets the idea that Kate and Molly's characters are lesbians, just because they are hanging out together. They make such a big deal out of the scene and really it could have been cut and the movie would have been fine. Or at least shortened, since Molly meeting her friend is a significant part of the movie.
This may be a dumb thread, but I just wanted to comment on these scenes. I'm sure I can think of others, but wanted to see if anyone else had any ideas.
