View Full Version : Question for anyone 21 Years old and Older about BIRTHDAY CARDS
TVFactFan 10-19-2008, 11:54 AM When you turned 21, was you looking for MONEY INSIDE YOUR BIRTHDAY CARD from any of your relatives???
My Brother turned 21 today and I bought his Card Friday, so I forgot it and my mom called and asked did I get him a BD CARD and I said-YES, and she said is there any money in it? I sad NO, and she said well it's no point in her coming to pick up the card to give to him??
I'm going to put money in the Card of a GROWN MAN?
theshark8777 10-19-2008, 12:07 PM Just from my parents and grandparents.

Exactly, not a older brother.
theshark8777 10-19-2008, 12:20 PM No I wouldn't expect money from an older brother.

lol - the only thing weirder would be buying him underwear and socks for Christmas!
Parents, Grandparents, Aunts and Uncles only put money in cards!

Please Email that to my mother-lol
MusicJunkie 10-19-2008, 03:32 PM my older sister still sneaks me in a $10 or $20 in a birthday card every year. But then... my older sister is 16 years older than me so it's not the same as a 31 year old buying a 28 year old a bday card with money, she is old enough that she could've been a teenage mom with me so I guess it's slightly different because I'll always be her baby brother, and not one she grew up with.

lol - I just got a visual of you at 64, your brother at 54 and him getting a card from you with a crisp, $10 bill in it!

I suppose it depends how close you guys are/were, you're 33, right? that's a bit of a gap. My sister was almost like a second mother and always babysat me when parents were working and took me places and everything, so her slipping me money at 28 (she's 45 now) isn't the same as if she was a few years older than me. Were you and your 21 year old brother exceptionally close and you were always a big brother mentor type? That usually is a factor. If you were always his big brother and he was your baby brother that you were like a second father to, you should slip him a $5 or something, but if you were just brothers but not particularly close, it's not a biggie IMO.
Brad Russ 10-19-2008, 05:53 PM I was never looking for it or expecting it, but the way my Aunt put it, now that's your 21, you probably need money more than ever, so she always gave me a little something. I mean lets face it, when do we most need money. AT 5, OR AT 21??

Only at Christmas LOL
Theda Bara 10-20-2008, 01:33 AM Oh, please your mom and send your brother 21 dollars in the card, because he turned 21.
BarneyFife 10-20-2008, 01:42 AM I think it depends on the family. Birthday's are more important to some families than others.
Doodyville10019 10-20-2008, 07:25 PM ummm, YEAH!! I got some money in my b-day cards when I turned 21 (and promptly spent it on getting my first legal hangover...LOL)
Of course I would put money in the envelope of a friend or family member turning 21. Unless I knew they could not drink for some reason (medical or otherwise) - in that case I would throw in a gift card to a favorite store or restaurant.
Jude The Obscure 10-20-2008, 09:04 PM When I graduated high school, yea I expected the money in cards, but not when I turned 21....heck, 21 was so uneventful.
Brian Damage 10-20-2008, 11:47 PM This thread has me cracking up. I guess first of all, it depends how close you are with your brother.
Secondly, 21 is a special age. I think it would be a nice gesture to give him a gift of some sort.
Janice 10-21-2008, 03:18 AM Like Brian said, 21 is a special age, so money would have been nice. My family always exchanged birthday gifts, no matter how old we were. Gift cards are nice. I have a family member who goes to Dunkin' Donuts every morning, so I give him a DD gift card. My brother is 39, and I gave him $100 for his birthday until two years ago, when he started to have more money than me. Now, it's just a nice card, with two months of Netflix or something like that.

 Great idea!
Schmoopie 10-21-2008, 03:38 AM Wow, that's surprising that your mom wanted you to put money in your brother's birthday card. Usually the parents are the ones who give the money. I've never gotten money from my little brother and don't ever expect to. My mom will put checks in my birthday cards and also puts one in my husband's cards.
As for my brother, here's a hilarious story. On my 30th birthday, my husband and I are getting ready to go eat. The phone rang and my husband answered it and then handed me the phone without telling me who it was. I assumed it was my mom because she always calls on my birthday. I was shocked when I realized it was my 19 year old brother actually calling to wish me Happy Birthday! So later, my mom called and I told her thank you for getting my brother to call me on my birthday and she said "I didn't tell him to call you." Man, that about made me faint! When I was in colllege and would call home, my brother wouldn't have anything to do with me!

TripperFan 10-21-2008, 11:27 AM Wanna have some fun with him? Afterall, he's 21 now....
Stuff the card with a blowup rubber doll that inflates the moment he opens the card.
That ought to get a reaction - from both your brother AND your mom!
(and I'll bet it's the last time mom suggests putting a little something in a card for him!) lol
