View Full Version : What Are Your Favorite Box Office Bombs?
JamesG 10-17-2008, 02:06 AM Despite the horrible reviews and horrible revenue at the box office; what box office flops are you not afraid to admit that you love?
These are my top favorite flops:
The Black Dahlia (2006) - Josh Hartnett & Scarlett Johansson
Almost Famous (2000) - Billy Crudip
The Boondock Saints (1999) - Willem Dafoe & Sean Patrick Flannery
Death to Smoochy (2002) - Robin Williams
The Man in the Iron Mask (1998) - Leonardo DiCaprio
Detroit Rock City (1999) - Edward Furlong
The Scarlet Letter (1995) - Demi Moore & Gary Oldman
The 13th Warrior (1999) - Antonio Banderas
The Ninth Gate (1999) - Johnny Depp
Blade Runner (1982) - Harrison Ford
comedyfreak 10-17-2008, 04:14 AM The Last Action Hero (1993) - Arnold Schwarzenegger
Batman and Robin (1997) - George Clooney
Catwoman (2004) - Halle Berry
Poseidon (2006) - Kurt Russell
tv star collector 10-17-2008, 08:09 AM Interesting topic. Let's see ...
"Catwoman"
"Ernest Goes to Jail"
"Flash Gordon"
"The Flintstones" (not a box office flop, but most critics hated it)
"Godzilla" (1998) (not as good as the original but not bad as remakes go)
"Hocus Pocus"
"Hook"
"Popeye" (good: cast and plot; bad: Harry Nillson's score)
"Rover Dangerfield"
"The Shadow"
"Sheena
"Supergirl" (good: Helen Slater; bad: plot and Faye Dunaway's performance)
Jack Gomez 10-17-2008, 01:24 PM The X-Files: I Want To Believe (2008) -Should have come out in the fall not the summer and a week right after the Dark Knight. What was the studio thinking?!
Targets (1968) -Just discovered this movie recently. Must see for Boris Karloff fans.
Mallrats (1995) - Underrated, ahead of it's time with all the comic book references which probably makes more sense to the majority of people today than back then.
Jersey Girl (2004)
The Thing (1982)
Serenity (2005)
The Monster Squad (1987) - This is such a fun movie, especially if your a fan of the old classic horror monsters.
Star Trek: Nemesis (2002) - The deleted scenes would have helped but still a good move.
Rocky V (1990) - I really like the family stuff in this one. The boxing stuff is pretty weak though.
Good thread!
Flash Gordon? Love that movie!
Two movies that come to mind feature the same actor late in his career: Sean Connery.
League Of Extrordinary Gentlemen - Had great potential. Good cast, really neat premise, the graphic novels it was based on are amazing, but the movie fell flat. Still like it.
The Avengers - The movie starred Ralph Fiennes and Uma Thurman with Connery as a super villian. Folks say Fiennes and Thurman weren't as good as the stars of the TV series ( I don't know, never saw the TV show) but I thought they made a good pair.
According to the IMDB, the movie was cut from its original running time of 2 1/2 hours to the theatrical cut of 90 minutes. I would be interested to see the original directors cut to see what the studio didn't like.
Nighthawk76 10-17-2008, 02:34 PM Blow Out (1981)-My second favorite movie ever. This is the greatest film that Brain De Palma ever made, and John Travolta's perfromance ranks along with his Saturday Night Fever performance as the greatest of his career.
Body Double (1984)-The ultimate erotic thriller/suspense thriller.
Days Of Thunder (1990)- Not a box office bomb, but it made much less money than Paramount had expected. And it didn't help that the movie cost 75 million to make.
The Shining (1980) - Believe it or not, this movie actually did poorly at the box office.
Vertigo (1958) - My favoritie movie. This Hitchcock classic is beatifully filmed, features a great Bernard Herrmann score and a powerful performance from Jimmy Stewart.
The X-Files-I Want To Believe (2008)-A shame that it didn't do better. I loved it and went to see it twice.

MusicJunkie 10-17-2008, 03:41 PM Kate Hudson won an Oscar for Almost Famous, and Blade Runner is a major cult classic that keeps getting released in 20 disc BluRay editions. I wouldn't consider either a flop even if they weren't smashes upon original release. When I think flop, I think movies like Gigli, Battlefield Earth or Ishtar which have horrible reputations. Almost Famous and Blade Runner are both fairly well-remembered even if they weren't the top box office hits of their years, so I wouldn't consider those bombs because of their reputations.

Blade Runner and Almost Famous are flops. They were horribly received in its original run. A movie could have a good reputation and following years after its release, but it is still a flop (in terms of box office revenue)
Also, some movies that are considered "great" have great opening runs and they start out making millions in the box office but then slowly goes down when people realize the movie is crap. A bad movie could have great sales and be a "smash hit".

Kate didn't win. She lost to Marcia Gay Harden in Pollach.

did Kate win a Golden Globe? I swear I remember her winning one of those awards for Almost Famous
catlover79 10-17-2008, 06:15 PM Jim Carrey's The Majestic (2001). It sank without a trace but I loved it - I was the only person in the theater. :( But it did not deserve the panning it received from most critics and the general public. I think Roger Ebert and I were the only ones who liked it!!

Yes, she won a Golden Globe (Best Supporting Actress) in early 2001 for Almost Famous.

thank you, I knew I wasn't going senile. I knew I remembered her winning a major award for that film and mistook it as an Oscar, but hell it's been 7 1/2 years, LOL
veggie-tari-jenn 10-18-2008, 01:20 AM I really liked Deuce Bigelow European Gigelow and there was noone in the theatre but my Fiancee and Me....that was a Bomb but I really liked both Deuce Movies:)

This is the only Jim Carey movie that I really like! So that makes three of us! :)
Don't laugh but when "Grease 2" came out, I absolutely loved it! I still like it but I think they should have called it something other than Grease 2. It was always compared to the original. I think I saw it in the movie theatre like 4 times! When the newspaper reviews came out, they actually gave it "0" stars! That was on a scale of 1-5! That's the only time I've ever seen that happen!
I found a website that listed box-0ffice bombs and I was surprised to find these two films (but these were considered bombs based on the fact that they earned far less money than the movies cost to make. So hopefully that is what we are talking about. Or are we talking about movies that were badly reviewed?
Anyway, the two I found were cartoons:
Ferngully-The last Rainforest-This is a great movie to teach people about the environment and so forth. It's about this construction worker who is on this crew to tear down a forest to build some building or something. He is accidentally shrunken and ends up being the same size as these little people who live in the forest. Not to give anything away but his small size doesn't last long and he realizes that its wrong to destroy someone's home.
Snoopy Come Home-Wow... this one REALLY surprised me! I remember seeing this in the movie theatre with my mom in 1973 and I can only think that it was revenue that made this a box office bomb. I can't even fathom a Peanuts cartoon doing so poorly. However I think this was the only feature film that Charles Schulz did. The rest were TV specials.... But they are all classics!

actually, there were two other Peanuts theatrical movies later on, Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown (1977) and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (1980). I used to love both as a kid, especially Bon Voyage

"A Boy Named Charlie Brown" was the first; so there were altogether four
"Peanuts" feature films.
One of my favorite movies, Citizen Kane, considered one of the greatest American movies ever made, was a box office failure when it premiered.
That might have had something to do with William Randolph Hearst's attempts to discredit the film. All newspapers owned by Hearst didn't advertized the film, review the film or mention it in any way. Hearst tried to buy the negatives from RKO pictures, threatened to discredit Kane's director co-writer and star Orson Welles by having him labeled as a communist, and tried to blackmail him in other ways.
The film was only granted a limited release, probably because of all the behind the scenes stuff going on.

You're welcome. :D Another box-office bomb I consider a guilty pleasure is Olivia Newton-John's Xanadu. :o

Brad Russ 10-18-2008, 09:34 PM The Cure. It only made about 5 million in the US, but it's still one of my top 5 favorite all time movies.
Sara Micelli 10-18-2008, 11:53 PM The Cure. It only made about 5 million in the US, but it's still one of my top 5 favorite all time movies.
That's a great movie. I bawled like a baby when I first saw it.

Ah, gold old Xanadu, definitely a flop. Actor Michael Beck who played Sonny "blames" that film for ruining his career. He just finished the cult-classic The Warriors and then got signed on for this one.
Actually, Xanadu recently made it to Broadway. It actually got some pretty good reviews but I hear the show is near the end of its run.
MusicJunkie 10-19-2008, 02:13 AM interesting about Xanadu, I heard that Dennis Quaid was one of the actors in the running for Sonny. Makes you wonder if he would have his career today had he done that.

I do own the Xanadu soundtrack - LOVE the music!! :D "Have to believe we are magic..."
Mikado 10-19-2008, 03:22 PM TOP SECRET, the Abrams bros spy/rock/swedish/WW2 movie spoof starring Val Kilmer...it basically bombed, but, its my fave non-silent comedy

Ah, Val Kilmer's 1st movie.
Val Kilmer actually hasn't had a hit in a while. He's one of Hollywood's most underrated actors. I hear he is a pain to work with however.
I'm a fan of him; I love most of his work. It sucks he is going to the straight-to-DVD market now.

Wow - I never heard that!! I did hear that ONJ wanted John Travolta for the role, but he was filming Urban Cowboy. They wouldn't pair up again until 1983's Two of a Kind. That was a HUGE bomb - it wasn't even enjoyable in a so-bad-it's good way!!
Cactus Jack 10-20-2008, 07:31 PM Tommy Boy, Black Sheep, Billy Madison, Happy Gilmore, My Blue Heaven, Sixteen Candles....etc.
Well depends what you call a flop
Schmoopie 10-05-2009, 01:30 PM actually, there were two other Peanuts theatrical movies later on, Race For Your Life, Charlie Brown (1977) and Bon Voyage, Charlie Brown (1980). I used to love both as a kid, especially Bon Voyage

How could I have forgotten about these great movies! I guess "Snoopy Come Home" comes to mind because I saw it in the movie theatre with my mom. I wish they would make more of these and show them on the big screen. That would be so cool!
phoebe7165 10-05-2009, 03:44 PM It's a Wonderful Life.
Despite being a Christmas classic, and loved by many, early on, in the theaters, it was a flop.
Jim Carrey's The Majestic (2001). It sank without a trace but I loved it - I was the only person in the theater. :( But it did not deserve the panning it received from most critics and the general public. I think Roger Ebert and I were the only ones who liked it!!
No you weren't, Monika, I loved it too! It's actually my personal favorite of Jim Carrey's movies (The Truman Show comes second in my opinion). I loved everything about this movie. I went with my college roommate to see it, I loved it and she hated it. She said she just wasn't expecting all the stuff about Blacklisting towards the end and didn't care. I think the movie requires a little bit of knowledge about that area for the film to have the intended impact.
The Scarlet Letter (1995) - Demi Moore & Gary Oldman
Oh, I have to disagree with you there. What Demi Moore did to Hester Prynne should be illegal! :barf: Oh, words can not describe how much I detest that movie. I doubt the screenwriters even read the book. And the book is one of the best novels ever written in the English language  If ever a movie deserved to bomb, it was this one. The version with Meg Foster leaves this one in the dust!
*
On the other side of things, I did like Kenneth Branagh's version of Mary Shelley's Frankenstein. That was a huge bomb, and I could have done with less shots of Helena Bonham Carter (with whom he was having an affair at the time) but it's still a guilty pleasure of mine.

Sylvester (with Melissa Gilbert)

Sure, I guess if you look at the book and the film the movie version did a poor job but I like this movie.
The director of this, Roland Joffé, went on to direct a REALLY, REALLY bad horror film a couple of years ago called Captivity. I didn't find one redeeming factor in that movie.

I didn't see The Ninth Gate until a couple of years after it was released. Later on I read that it was a flop at the box office. I did The Black Dahlia in theaters.

I have heard from people in video retail that lately this is a high rental; at least around where I am.
I think that's because there is a lot of interest in a certain director due to recent news.

I wouldn't be surprised if it was high rental because of the director.

I do actually own the DVD of The Black Dahlia. It's okay, but it could have been so much better:
1 - No Josh Hartnett
2 - No trying to tell us Hilary Swank looked anything like Betty Short
3 - No Scarlett Johanson love triangle (who cared anyways?)
4 - No fire vs ice fight (again, who really cared?)
5 - And actually focusing on the Dahlia case...
Great idea for a movie, great director, great visual style.... awful script.

Almost saw that in theaters, then I realized the plot and Hollywoodland which came out two weeks before and was great, were basically the same, only without the Superman tsuff and the main character being a lady
