View Full Version : Question: Could UM seasons come to DVD?
hostedbyrobertstack 10-15-2008, 07:56 PM It got me thinking with the renewed interest in the show, and no more volumes being allowed, that maybe we may see some unsolved mysteries seasons released on DVD? I know it's a long shot, but companies seem to be running out of shows to put on DVD, and if they go back through their old stock, they may see a renewed interest.
any thoughts?
marlins3 10-15-2008, 08:03 PM Given the nature of Um, probably not :( I would definitely buy them if they were available. With solved segments, music rights, etc., it would be difficult. I mention music rights for one reason. In many UM segments, they used popular songs ("I fought the law", Elvis Presley songs, Iron Butterfly songs, Jimi Hendrix, etc.) and to release these episodes on DVD, they have to pay for the music rights again. That is actually the reason "The Wonder Years" (another fave) was never released on DVD. Also, when are they gonna release Diff'rent Strokes, season 3 on DVD. I've been stuck with season one since 2004 and season 2 since 2005. there's been nothing since GRRRRRRRRRRRRRR
Mattmc 10-15-2008, 08:24 PM Unfortunatly .... I think that any other show in history has a better chance comming to DVD than this one , I hope I can eat my words one day . I would not hesitate to pay $100.00 per season ... but it would have to be complete .... and behind the scenes stuff would be nice ..... now I'm just hallucinating
justins5256 10-16-2008, 01:19 AM I don't think UM will be released on DVD in season sets, unfortunately.
Yes, I know there is a lot of absolute garbage on DVD and some people raise that argument but UM's original "news" type format (yeah, it's "not a news broadcast", I know) doesn't make it a good condidate for DVD.
It's kind of like asking when they are going to release season sets of "60 Minutes" or "Dateline" or even "America's Most Wanted" for that matter.

Thats a very good point , I myself would like to see some old segments from 20/20 , like late 80s early 90s ... I can remember some that scared me a little bit .
browneyes106 10-16-2008, 03:05 PM I think it is a long shot. It is possible to release a tv show on DVD without copyrighted music because it can be reedited to not have music. Fox released the short lived show Point Pleasant without copyrighted music and replaced the songs with cheaper songs.

Yes, The studios usually replace copyrighted songs with cheap random instrumentals. The fans usually complain about it though it's never really bothered me.I don't think it would bother many of us UM fans very much.

It wouldn't me either and I agree many UM fans wouldn't be bothered.
tygre 10-20-2008, 08:06 AM Music rights were a big reason why Beverly Hills 90210 was delayed so long in coming to DVD, mainly because almost every episode had current (at the time) pop music, but they eventually replaced all of the music with generic-sounding filler stuff, and season 6 will be out later this year. They could do the same with UM and I doubt the show would suffer for it.
That said, though, I don't think it will happen anytime soon.
marlins3 10-20-2008, 05:24 PM IMO, producers, so-called pop culture experts, etc probably believe UM is ashow that doesn't translate well toa season-by-season release.
UM fans disagree (In my best Stack voice)
ms_bates 01-14-2009, 12:12 AM I wish that they would. But for various reasons (including those listed above) I doubt that they will.
If they won't release complete seasons, I'd wish they'd release some boxsets from other genres. I'd love to own a collection of "Lost Loves" segments, some of those were so touching and sweet! I'd also like to see a Missing Persons collection.

I think it would cool if there was a Lost Loves segment, and missing persons segment. Also a notorious criminal set would be cool too.
LI_UM_Fan 01-14-2009, 09:58 AM Its sad, but it is more likely that this current incarnation of the show would be released before the old version.
