Cowboys quickly give Williams new deal

ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. – After acquiring WR Roy Williams from the Lions for three NFL draft picks, the Dallas Cowboys signed him through the 2013 season, owner Jerry Jones confirmed from the owners meetings.
“This year plus an additional five,” Jones said of the contract extension for Williams, acquired for a first-, third- and sixth-round pick in 2009.
Financial terms of Williams’ contract were undisclosed. In addition, the Cowboys will receive Detroit’s seventh-round pick next year.
For Jones, it was welcome news after a brutal past week in which cornerback Adam Jones has been suspended indefinitely for his role in an off-field fight last week, and quarterback Tony Romo, receiver Sam Hurd, corner Terence Newman, running back Felix Jones, punter Mat McBriar and outside linebacker Anthony Spencer have suffered injuries or had surgery.



“This is good news, finally,” said Jerry Jones, whose team will also receive a fifth-round draft pick from the Titans as a result of Adam Jones’ suspension. “This gives us another threat on the other side of Terrell (Owens). That’s something that (offensive coordinator) Jason Garrett and I talked about during the offseason, getting another big-time threat on the other side to go with (Owens) and (tight end) Jason Witten.”
During his first four years with Detroit, Williams averaged 61 receptions a season. The seventh overall pick in the ‘04 draft out of Texas, Williams was second on the team this year with 17 receptions.
Jerry Jones made no secret that he has been pursuing Williams for a long time.
“We’ve been talking to the Lions for two years about Roy, who is very familiar to us being from Texas,” Jones said. “I talked to them again just before the draft and at the most recent owners meetings and we finally were able to get something done.”
As for concerns about how Williams will coexist with the emotional Owens, Jones smiled.
“I called Terrell and he was ecstatic,” Jones revealed. “He was the first person I called after I talked to Roy. As soon as Terrell heard he said, ‘Give me Roy’s number, I have to call him,’ .”

He was awful as a #2 guy. For every pass he caught, he would drop about 2 or 3. He was more of a #3 WR. I actually Liked Austin more than Crayton and thought he might eventually be the #2 but he got hurt and it slowed him down. Their's a report on the Zone that Detroit originally wanted Austin in the deal but Jerry wouldn't trade him and instead gave them a #1 instead.

With a slew of injuries in the past few weeks, the Cowboys couldn't afford to hold a roster spot for their pro bowl punter. Sam Paulescu was signed to take McBriar's place.

I like how all the tv experts say its a bad deal. The Cowboys basically just gave up a #1 for him because we have more than one #3. They all thought it was a great deal if Philly got him but not the Cowboys. lol

Roy Williams was a great player in a bad environment- a change of scenery is what he'll need.

I agree with mriggles, Roy Williams is a very good receiver, but it isn't the move they needed to make. They need people in the secondary. Also, they gave up a #1 draft pick as well as a #3 and a #6. I think that is a little too steep.

I don't know. The last few days I've been hearing that the Eagles should make a move for him but I don't know if they were serious or not. Might have just been the so called experts talking. :lol:

I don't think it was too high a price. It was basically a #1 draft pick and we were going to spend it on a WR anyway probably. We have multiple picks in the later rounds so that doesn't bother me as much. It's not like the Joey Galloway trade where we gave two #1 picks...dumbest Cowboy move of all time.The Cowboys do have problems on defense but they've been drafting on defense for years....doesn't seemed to have helped any.

"I'm happier to be here than I was when I got my first bike."

How excited are you to be playing with guys like Romo and T.O.?

"T.O. was the first person to call me... so I think we're going to make a good combination. All we wanna do is win. That's all I wanna do. That's all I've been wanting to do since I left UT."

What'd you and T.O. talk about?

"Just talked about winning. Talked about how hard they practice there. Talked about winning ballgames and getting to the Super Bowl. So that's our goal, that's been my goal since I got into the league."

How much does it revive your passion?

"Oh man, going from 0-5 to 4-2... can't ask for anything better."

How will you and T.O. help each other on the field?

"It's a wide-open offense, I just want to come in, learn my role, and help the team win."

Family's reaction?

"I couldn't even get it out to my mom. She screamed at the top of her lungs and threw the phone. I think she was happier than I was. My brothers live in Dallas, they were happy as well."

- Hasn't talked to anyone besides T.O. Says T.O. learned from the greatest in Jerry Rice, so now T.O. will pass the torch along to Roy and teach him how to work the way Jerry taught T.O.

- I've always been a Cowboys fan, wanted to be like Herschel Walker growing up. Just to know that I might finish my career in Dallas makes me feel at home.

- I can never forget about the Detroit Lions, they're the ones who brought me into the league... Millen and Mariucci believed in me, so I'll never forget about those guys.

- T.O. is the #1 guy. My role will be to complement him. I'll be #2 or #3 or wherever I fit in. I'll help this team win anyway I can.

- I've never had an older WR to show me the way. I've watched film on Jerry Rice. Now I just have to watch T.O.

- I am somewhat sad that it didn't work out in Detroit. We weren't winning ballgames, but I've been with these guys for a long time. I have a bunch of friends I'm leaving behind. I don't know anything else, all I know is Detroit. But at the same time, I'm ready to win some ballgames, feel what the playoffs and MNF is all about.

- Jerry told me he's excited for me to be a part of the franchise, he's watched me since I was at Texas. He's proud to have me and hopes I can come in and help us get to the Super Bowl.

We still have 12 picks so we basically just gave up a #1 for him and if the Cowboys make the playoffs, it would be a low #1. We had an extra #3. Is their another WR that is better than RW that we could have drafted in the first round because WR was still one of our weaknesses?
