That's what I was thinking! I'm listening to her as I type this. A track from her 1980 solo album (not released until 1996), it's a disco number called "Lovelines." So un-Carpenters, but still a nice song!

I've only heard two tracks from it (the other is My Body Keeps Changing My Mind), but I'm gonna get to finding the others one of these days. A few weeks ago, I spent a whole night listening to non-singles from all of the 70s albums. Some really, really great songs in there! "Love is Surrender" is such a fun, bouncy song, but I hate how short it is!

I like it, too. "A Song For You", "Crescent Noon", and "Someday" are definitely amongst my favorite Carpenters non-singles.

CRESCENT NOON!!

How could I forget that one? Words can not explain that song's power...so haunting, so deep, so emotional. Karen's voice is just...it's perfect for it. The arrangement is just incredible...the whole "Somewhere, in a fairy tale forest" bit is just...there are no words to describe it. It's the perfect example of Richard's genius use of overdubbing.

Listen to it on a grey, overcast day while sitting by a window...I don't know why, but it just touches my heart in a way no other song can. Brings me to tears sometimes.

And so of course I'm listening to it now. The piano, the strings....the overdubbing...good lord, it's just a perfect song. So perfect.

Carole is one who didn't come to my mind soon enough. I pretty much adore all of the people from the singer-songwriter movement of the early 70s. Carly, Carole, and James are like...the holy trinity of singer-songwriters to me.

IMHO, Carole King just may be the most important female in the history of pop music. First she wrote timeless, classic songs with her then-husband, Gerry Goffin ("Take Good Care of My Baby", "Will You Still Love Me Tomorrow", "One Fine Day" to name just a very few), and then she roared out of the gate as one of the most important female singer/songwriters of the 1970s. Her 1971 album Tapestry is still one of the most beloved and top sellers in pop music.

As far as female singer songwriters from the early 70's you MUST include Larua Nyro. What a body of work she left us.

1 Gwen Stefani
2 Madonna
3 Cree Summer
4 Ashley Tisdale
5 Mariah Carey

Honerable mention: Miley Cyrus (Go ahead and make fun of me)

I prefer male singers and only recently have become acquainted with the "divas". I pay more attention to pop music now than I used to.
