View Full Version : Artists you once disliked?
HuntingtonM15 10-05-2008, 11:47 PM Has there ever been an artist that you could not stand for whatever reason, and then you suddenly started liking them?
I had that happen with Lee Ann Womack. I don't even know why I didn't like her, but I absolutely could not stand her. I felt like I was the only person who hated "I Hope You Dance." I just thought it was awful. Whenever I heard a song of hers on the radio or a video of hers on TV, I would instantly change the channel. Then in early 2005, the video for "I May Hate Myself in the Morning" came on, and I decided to give it a chance. I didn't immediately love it, but I didn't hate it, either, and that was a first. Shortly after, she released her "There's More Where That Came From" album and by that point I could not deny that it was amazing. I thought the entire album was just brilliant, and it went on to win the CMA Album of the Year later that year. From then on I've pretty much been a fan, and I'm really looking forward to her new album.
MusicJunkie 10-06-2008, 12:02 AM I admit for a long time I didn't like Mariah because there was a huge Madonna/Mariah online war between fans a number of years ago and back then, I was a much bigger Madonna fan than I am now (still love her, just don't think she can walk on water) so I took Team Madonna. It's not so bad now but back in the late 90's on AOL boards, Madonna and Mariah fans would fight endlessly. It's so stupid in hindsight. I got away from it by 2000 and I consider myself a Mariah fan now, and think E=MC2 blows the piss away from Hard Candy
Schmoopie 10-06-2008, 12:51 AM I used to be into groups like Depeche Mode, etc but now I'm really into Jazz. I love Harry Connick Jr and Michal Bubble. As early as 10 years ago, there is no way I would listen to a jazz station. Now my favorite radio station plays the classics, like Dean Martin, Ella Fitzgerald, Harry Connick Jr, Michael Bubble, etc. I can barely stand the pop stations.

MusicJunkie 10-06-2008, 12:55 AM I can barely stand the pop stations.
same here, I still like pop music, but I can't stomach radio anymore... they are obsessed with catering to Miley Cyrus and Jonas Brothers fans and that's what Radio Disney is for. I've been getting more into alt-rock and stuff that's popular in Europe lately since pop seems to be geared to a 12 year old audience now. Even freaking New Kids On the Block are trying to court a fanbase who weren't born when they were originally popular, and let's not talk about Madonna's latest abortion of an album.
Wreckless 10-06-2008, 01:26 AM I used to really HATE Lil Wayne and his music lol. Now I like his music while people & friends of mine admit to liking his old music, and dislike his new. I think he's talented, just has his mind in the wrong place a lot.
MonarC 10-06-2008, 11:36 AM I didn't use to like Metallica when I was yonger. Mostly because I was taught that it was "Devil Music". Then once I actually listened to the words and what he was talking about I realized it's not all that bad. I especally love the softer beautiful guitar riffs.
Nighthawk76 10-06-2008, 03:30 PM I used to dislike both Prince and Billy Joel, and now I like both of them quite a bit. I think they are both amazing songwriters. As I've grown older, I've learned to appreciate their talents much more than I used too.
phoebe7165 10-06-2008, 05:03 PM I could not stand Nickelback before. I was listening to NPR one time and they actually had a story about how 2 of their songs from different CDs sound almost the same(one of them was "How You Remind Me", I forget the other one though). One guy even put both songs together and played them and they did almost sound the same. I thought how uncreative!! Plus I have a thing for lead singers with really strong voices and the guy who sings for them, Chad, I thought he had a horrible voice. I just hated everything I had heard on the radio from them. Lately, some of their current stuff has been OK. In fact, there was one time, my sister & I were driving in the car, Nickelback came on the radio, I didn't immediately change the station. We let the song play(I think it was called "If Anyone Cares"??) and my sister says "You did know that was Nickelback?" and I said "Yeah, but that's a OK song, you know I would've changed the station otherwise"
But I don't see myself seeing them in concert any time soon though!!:D
EmoJoe 10-06-2008, 05:40 PM i didnt like Chris Brown a few years ago but now i like a lot of his stuff.
...thats all i can think of! well, i used to hate hip-hop/rap in general, but lately ive been liking a lot of hip-hop/rap songs.

eh, i kind of disagree. i listen to top 40 radio all the time and the only stuff from Miley and JoBros i hear is See You Again (which is a GOOD song, i dont care if its by Miley Cyrus :p) and Burnin Up...and i dont hear them too much anymore. 7 Things didn't do so well on top 40 radio (thank God) and Lovebug also appears to be flopping there.
Purffin 10-06-2008, 09:07 PM I didn't used to like country music at all when i was a teenager , i though it was lame ,but alot of it is actually pretty good.
Also alot of this new rap thats coming out now but some of its not so bad
Cactus Jack 10-06-2008, 10:15 PM I used to hate new music, now I like some of it, I always did, I just hated all then rap stuff that was popular a few years ago.
I used to hate all rap except 90s, well its 90s but now I think California Love is one of the greatest rap songs ever, if not the greatest, IMO. Now I want yo hear one song for all 50 states ending in "Love" lOL.
My musical tastes change like any celeb with a bunch of girlfriends/boyfriends. I love stuff from 50s to stuff now, Im one of the few people my age I think that likes just about anything from the past 50 or so years.
I used to hate Plain White Ts and Sean Kingston, now theyre not so bad.
Someone who I will admit to liking is Katy Perry, its great how she doesnt get too "girly" in her songs LOL.
I like Jordin Sparks and David ArchuletaBUT NEVER DISLIKED THEM.
James 10-07-2008, 02:16 AM I can only think of two at the moment that fit the category: the group The Beach Boys and singer Gordon Lightfoot. I started liking the Beach Boys somewhere around high school (after all, their music is featured in The Wonder Years!), and Mr. Lightfoot's voice is a good accompaniment to the scenery in the Dakotas, or anywhere you see grain elevator after grain elevator.

well, US radio is famous for refusing to play artists over 40 no matter how good the song is. They made a mere exception for Madonna because of Justin and Timbaland, but as soon as she put "Give It 2 Me" out without a young hip guest star, radio went back to ignoring her just like they have since 2003. In other countries, her age isn't a big deal and she's still scoring hits like it was 1987, but here she's done because she's not young. So many good older artists are still coming out with good songs that won't chart anywhere except dance because radio won't touch it.
It's really sad because in the UK, France, Italy and other countries older artists are still welcome on the radio. Cliff Richard is almost 70 and he just scored a top 3 hit in the UK a few weeks ago, but in America, programmers are so afraid of scaring off a 12 year old Jonas Brothers fan that you won't hear anyone over 40 :(
EmoJoe 10-07-2008, 05:12 PM I like Jordin Sparks and David ArchuletaBUT NEVER DISLIKED THEM.
LOL....sure. :p
James 10-10-2008, 12:44 PM I can't believe I forgot to mention Elvis Presley! Growing up I didn't care for "The King", but back in 1999 I toured Graceland! Heck, every time I'm driving in western Tennessee I gain new appreciation for him!
dlemond 10-11-2008, 06:42 PM As a kid I could not stand The Doors.
At some point- college I guess- I just started listening to them and was into it.
