View Full Version : Stainless Steel Appliances
DLevine2 10-03-2008, 08:51 AM Our next home will have stainless steel appliances. The home we're living in has black appliances for right now. We were wanting to have black appliances for our new home but we'll go with stainless steel appliances. Does any one have stainless steel appliances or like stainless steel appliances? Last Sunday, we bought a 26 cubic feet Frigidaire stainless steel refrigerator for our new home to go with the SS stove and the SS microwave.
MonarC 10-03-2008, 09:13 AM Yes I do. I think I prefer black to stainless steel. If you have kids you will always have to polish the stainless or else it looks dirty. With the black you just give it a quick wipedown and it looks great. By the way I have Frigidaire appliances too. That is a good choice. I have had no problems so far.
Chocolate Moose 10-03-2008, 09:46 AM Yes, all of ours are stainless.
Dusty's Fan 10-03-2008, 12:38 PM Stainless is nice because it goes with most decors and you don't have to worry about matching colors.
If you'd like more brand recommendations, I've had good luck with General Electric and Panasonic appliances. Amana used to be excellent, but I'm not entirely sold on much of their current stuff (made by Haier).
TripperFan 10-03-2008, 12:44 PM I have black appliances and love them. We had to replace our refridge last fall and all I could get was a black cabinet with stainless doors.
I can't stand it! They touted stainless as being easier to clean and not showing finger prints - HA! They show EVERYTHING! And then you have to buy special wipes for them to easily clean them.
Also, to me, the look is too "institutional" - like you're living in a restaurant or cafeteria or something.
Oh yah - and they also dent very easily.
Bottom line - stainless steel SUCKS imo!!:p
The fridge is an LG and it is great. All my other appliances are Kitchen Aid.

I really prefer black appliances especially the textured black refrigerator which you can't see fingerprints. The bad thing about stainless steel appliances you can see handprints on them which you will have to use some kind of special cleaning products for SS appliances.
DLevine2 10-04-2008, 08:36 AM Anyway, I will get used to having stainless steel appliances soon in our new house. Stainless steel appliances makes the home look nice but cost more than black & white appliances.

Yep - that's what the cabinet on my fridge is like and it makes the most sense (textured black). It never looks dirty - I have to remember to wipe it down once a month. I don't know where they get that SS don't show handprints - they're the worst for it.
And yes - they're more expensive. I think it's just a trend right now.
Hey - at least they're no longer "avocado" like in the 70s - that had to be the worst colour in the history of kitchen appliances!
Schmoopie 10-06-2008, 01:58 AM That's funny this topic was mentioned because my husband and I are seriously looking for stainless steel oven, microwave and dishwasher. Our fridge is already stainless. We decided that if we are going to splurge on something it should be the oven, so we're willing to spend some serious money.
We looked at a KitchenAid dishwasher today that we liked a lot and the woman at the booth just raved about it. We were at the Home Show in Everett, Washington. Those are great places to learn about new products.
Anyone here have a KitchenAid dishwasher? The one we saw has the top shelf that you can raise or lower, which is pretty cool.
All of our appliances came with our house and the house was built in 2001, so some of them need serious upgrading!
The oven and microwave wall units we were looking at were both black and stainless, but the oven was really cool because the inside of it was blue! And I love the fact that the heating element is now concealed, unlike the older models.

Mine is a 13 year old Kitchen Aid and I still love it. It's never needed servicing and still runs pretty quietly. I'm sure the models today are even better.
My oven is a ceran top black, Kitchen Aid (convection) and I wouldn't trade it for anything. A couple of years ago, one of the element's thermostats seemed to act up and my husband wanted to look at new stoves. I didn't like anything nearly as much and held off. Good thing too - because it corrected itself and hasn't acted strange since!
I'd highly recommend them. The refridge we had was a Kitchen Aid, but gave it up last fall (when we got the LG SS).
They're a fairly good make. Made by Whirlpool but is the top of Whirlpool's line.
Hope this helps. :)

Thanks! I appreciate that! I'll definitely pass the info on to my husband. It's nice to get a "real" opinion rather than a salesperson's opinion. Even though, the woman we spoke to said she had one and wouldn't trade it for the world. Sometimes you have to wonder, though. We were looking at convection ovens too, so thanks for mentioning them!

SBTB Geek 10-06-2008, 08:14 PM Stainless raises a kitchen's value. It looks a lot better and it's preferred by most.
PlayOn 10-06-2008, 08:25 PM my mom and step-dad have a stain-less steel fridge, and microwave and dishwasher (if i'm not mistaken.)
she hates having to clean it because of fingerprints, but it looks nice.
good luck in your new home and with the appliances. :)
MixingBowl 10-07-2008, 10:43 PM I know of someone who bought a Stainless Steel Refrigerator which was quite nice looking on the outside. When we opened it it was so odd. It was completely white and everything was rounded in feature. It did resemble a hyperberic chamber. It was very strange. Also the person has a sofa and I get the feeling that somebody was killed and landed on it causing an odd odor of formalydehyde on it. That was later when I was told of the odor that I realized that yes someone had died on it. I did not tell her because her boyfriend is a goof and deserves heady aroma.
InspectorExstead 10-08-2008, 01:04 AM we currently have white appliances in our kitchen but i haaaate it. i really like stainless steel appliances. they make a kitchen look a lot nicer & more up to date. though they are more trouble because of the finger prints showing up, like many have mentioned, i would prefer to have them in our kitchen. maybe in the future my parents will want to re-do our kitchen.
Dude111 02-25-2026, 04:14 AM We have all stainless steel appliances and they are all crap compared to the GOOD earlier ones we had..
Sadly my parents are taken in by MSM crap and we got all this garbage now that doesnt work 1/2 as good!!
ponytail 02-26-2026, 07:47 AM We have SS appliances and we don't care for them. It's the smudges and fingerprints.
stevea 02-26-2026, 09:13 AM I don't like them. They show everything and they require a special cleaner to get the marks off.
Dude111 02-26-2026, 06:07 PM The dishwasher we have is horrible!
1/2 the time the stuff comes out still dirty!!
