What is it and why?

i don't like the episode where tia wont be in the jumprope contest just because of some gurl she is afraid of....

When they are so hard on both the girls and Tyreke in that episode, when Tia finds out, that he was in jail. I can understand, that they were worried about Tia's safety, but she was also old enough to choose for herself which guy she should go out with.
