On September 26th, 2008, Gary Coleman was Guest Star in the RaiUno's show "I migliori anni" (Best Years), a show where 20th century decade (60s to 90s) best things has a kind of competition. Old Music, Shows and Memories compete one with other. The winner is decided by a popular jury made by 100 18-year old boys and girls.
During the 70s performances, Gary Coleman was invited as guest star and talked some minute about Diff'rent Strokes years, but no reference to Dana Plato's death or other actor's life. Just an odd reference to Forest Whitaker acting in the series as "The Gooch", but it was really a mistake (he actually acted as Herman the Bully in the "Bully for Arnold" episode). The italian showman Carlo Conti explains to the audience "I don't know what Gary is talking about, but the people loving the tv series knows what he's talking about"... hmm what a mistake.
The Diff'rent Strokes series was referenced by using the second italian title "Il mio amico Arnold" (maybe the most popular?, but just used during mid 80s re-runs, while the last used after 1995, simply "Arnold" was totally forgot). The first season theme sequence (maybe restored in the recent DVD italian set? The TV networks didn't air it since 1984, since they replaced it with a self-made theme sequence made by 4th season episode clips) and a veryt short clip from "Willis' Privacy" episode was aired during interview.
Also, Carlo Conti asked Gary to perform the "Whatchoo talkin 'about" catchfrase in italian, as usually the original dubber performs in the italian version. Gary seems fakely happy to do it but his italian was not so bad.
Gary also told he's married now (isn't he already divorced?), he's working on a new movie and a new tv series (hmm...).
I think a lot of mistakes and fakes were intentionally made in this interview. Maybe it's just a kind of commercial, since the first Diff'rent Strokes dvd was released in Italy just two weeks ago.
