PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk
Group Says Move Would Help Humans, Cows

POSTED: 1:48 pm EDT September 23, 2008
UPDATED: 9:53 am EDT September 24, 2008

WATERBURY, Vt. -- People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals sent a letter to Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, cofounders of Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc., urging them to replace cow's milk they use in their ice cream products with human breast milk, according to a statement recently released by a PETA spokeswoman.

"PETA's request comes in the wake of news reports that a Swiss restaurant owner will begin purchasing breast milk from nursing mothers and substituting breast milk for 75 percent of the cow's milk in the food he serves," the statement says.

PETA Urges Ben & Jerry's To Use Human Milk

PETA officials say a move to human breast milk would lessen the suffering of dairy cows and their babies on factory farms and benefit human health.

"The fact that human adults consume huge quantities of dairy products made from milk that was meant for a baby cow just doesn't make sense," says PETA Executive Vice President Tracy Reiman. "Everyone knows that 'the breast is best,' so Ben & Jerry's could do consumers and cows a big favor by making the switch to breast milk."

"We applaud PETA's novel approach to bringing attention to an issue, but we believe a mother's milk is best used for her child," said a spokesperson for Ben and Jerry's.

September 23, 2008

Ben Cohen and Jerry Greenfield, Cofounders

Ben & Jerry's Homemade Inc.

Dear Mr. Cohen and Mr. Greenfield,

On behalf of PETA and our more than 2 million members and supporters, I'd like to bring your attention to an innovative new idea from Switzerland that would bring a unique twist to Ben and Jerry's.

Storchen restaurant is set to unveil a menu that includes soups, stews, and sauces made with at least 75 percent breast milk procured from human donors who are paid in exchange for their milk. If Ben and Jerry's replaced the cow's milk in its ice cream with breast milk, your customers-and cows-would reap the benefits.

Using cow's milk for your ice cream is a hazard to your customer's health. Dairy products have been linked to juvenile diabetes, allergies, constipation, obesity, and prostate and ovarian cancer. The late Dr. Benjamin Spock, America's leading authority on child care, spoke out against feeding cow's milk to children, saying it may play a role in anemia, allergies, and juvenile diabetes and in the long term, will set kids up for obesity and heart disease-America's number one cause of death.

Animals will also benefit from the switch to breast milk. Like all mammals, cows only produce milk during and after pregnancy, so to be able to constantly milk them, cows are forcefully impregnated every nine months. After several years of living in filthy conditions and being forced to produce 10 times more milk than they would naturally, their exhausted bodies are turned into hamburgers or ground up for soup.

And of course, the veal industry could not survive without the dairy industry. Because male calves can't produce milk, dairy farmers take them from their mothers immediately after birth and sell them to veal farms, where they endure 14 to17 weeks of torment chained inside a crate so small that they can't even turn around.

The breast is best! Won't you give cows and their babies a break and our health a boost by switching from cow's milk to breast milk in Ben and Jerry's ice cream? Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Tracy Reiman

Executive Vice President

It was one thing to protest Michael Vick for his dogfighting, but this is ridiculous.

If it were up to PETA, they'd try and convert the world to being vegetarian.

I do think that vegetarianism is a good lifestyle choice if you want to do it, but I hate when vegetarians start attacking people who eat meat for being "wrong". I always like a little chicken or meatbealls in my pasta. I know it's eating a dead animal but it tastes good to me.

Personally, one day I wouldn't mind trying being a vegetarian out, but even if I became one and the vegetarian diet worked for me, I would never be pompous and tell someone who is about to eat a piece of pizza with meat on it that they're a killer.

I think PETA are just Nazis and have to complain about stupid things to keep active. Michael Vick deserved what he got, but complaining about cows milk is just ridiculous and makes their organization look like a joke.

I can't stand dairy products and there's no way I would touch anything made with what PETA has in mind. Funny thing, Human's are classified as animals from a biological perspective but I guess it's safe to say that PETA hasn't taken that into consideration.

i have donated my breast milk to a milk bank and i think this is stupid because the milk needs to go to babys that need it. Also cancer and burn patients use the breastmilk for medical purposes.

You can transmit AIDS through breast milk.

Of course, I'm sure they'd test their subjects if this crazy idea ever became reality. But still, the mere possibility is enough to keep me away.

ew...that is gross! i've never liked peta, even when i was a vegetarian for six years. they're way too radical & want to convert everyone to vegetarianism. i don't think they understand how HARD it is to be a vegetarian & how much determination/motivation you need, especially if you don't cook much. and a lot of people don't want to even be a vegetarian, which is perfectly fine...that's their choice. they're becoming more and more radical and it's giving them a bad name.

Just did a quick Google thing:

Cows produce between 5-8 gallons of milk a day during their milking period.

I would assume that a human female produces much less. I really don't feel like spending any more time on this subject than I have to, so I didn't bother to do another google search.

Anyhoo...

If we're taking milk from a source that produces less milk than a cow, wouldn't the demand (and of course the price) go up?

What are we going to do with all the cows? The dairy farms? The farmers?

Does PETA even bother to think things through before they make these crazy announcements?

;)

Which should drive the price of the stuff to about $19.95 a pint! It's already the most expensive ice cream on the market.

I am one of the biggest animal supporters on earth, but the last organization I would ever join is PETA. This organization has brought this ridicule on themselves with their ridiculous campaigns that only go overboard so the public turn against them.
Sorry - but splashing paint or blood (and where do you guys get this blood from anyway - vegetables???) on fur coats is crazy. At least the animal was grown and "farmed" for the purpose and now you've ruined that purpose so their death was totally in vain.
Comparing the stabbing and beheading death of an innocent young man on a bus to people eating chicken was the final straw for me. And to put a full page ad in major newspapers about it the day following the murder is the most heartless thing I've ever heard of. Your feelings are hurt by this thread? Think of that young man's family and how PETA jumps on their sons murder to make it a campaign for them? Now THAT'S heartless.
And now this stupid crap about ice cream for God's sake! As if milking a cow is cruelty - if anything, they HAVE to be milked to be kept healthy.
If your group (notice I'm not saying YOU), but your group made better choices on how you get your point across, then you might be taken seriously for a change.
If you want to be vegetarian, fine, but shut your face when it comes to the rest of us - you don't see us cramming meat or leather products down your throats do you?

GREENPEACE YES......PETA NO!

I vividly remember in grade 11 Man in Society class (basically it was pyschology tho), they did experiments in the 60s and 70s on plants to see if they had "feelings" since they too, are LIVING things. Get this - they DO. They hooked up two plants to a machine similar to a lie detector in a barren room and a lineup of 20 people passed each one.
Then they filed past again, this time, one of them tearing one plant apart - just going nuts on it - shredding the leaves from the stems, etc..
Then the subjects were made to file past the remaining, untouched plant. The readings on the seismonitor (sp?) when right off the chart when the person who destroyed the other plant passed by and they could visibly see it "shaking".

So tell me now PETA people - what are we as "responsible" humans supposed to do - chow down on concrete???

lol, great point. PETA thinks that animals experience the same levels of emotion as we do ("The fact is all animals feel pain, fear and loneliness. We're asking people to recognize that what Jews and others went through in the Holocaust is what animals go through every day in factory farms," i directly quote), so i guess plants do too. maybe we should throw blood all over PETA members every time they eat a vegetable and tell them that what jews and others went through in the holocaust is what lawns go through every time they're mowed.

you tell 'em Cathie. And I notice you haven't been responded to yet.

I think the message of PETA in it's original mission statement was a good thing. But they have become extremists, and extremists are never good no matter the cause. I do agree that a vegetarian lifestyle is commendable, but it should be the persons choice, and they should live and let live to others who like to eat beef or chicken. People detest PETA because not because they are for saving the lives of animals, but because the lives of animals are more valuable in their eyes than humans. Remember the South Park episode where PETA saw Stan, all beaten and torn up, riding on a horse, and got upset because of the poor little horse?

When PETA talks about important issues (such as KFC's treatment of its chickens), I can respect that, but it's all the extremist crap they do, such as breast milk, favorite animals to humans, destroying fur coats with blood, etc.... that makes them a punchline.

So if you're upset with me for no reason, please back off because I'm having a bad day and can snap at anything.

I was talking about the PETA apologist who was hurt and offended with how mean this thread is for bashing the group.

I wasn't looking for an argument, just clarification on your statement and to tell you that members had responded. Hope you feel better.

That "PETA Apologist" happens to be a very good friend of mine. I kind of figured she would respond and although I'm not involved with PETA, I was kind of amazed myself at the things that were said about the members. I know people were just expressing their feelings about the organization, but it would be nice if they were directed toward the organization as a whole and not toward people. Meaning, instead of saying "People who support PETA are idiots", just say that you don't agree with their practices. I'm not trying to be judgmental or bossy, but even I found some of these posts offensive!

This Chit Chat group has been posting like this for years. We have fun with topics, debate strongly on some or a little bit of both. People are not going to censor themselves. If people are offended, there's not much I can say, but nobody made a direct attack on any one person, but on the organization's tactics. If someone was personally attacked and I missed it, let me know. I know the group consists of people, but don't all groups. We discuss them all here, and have been for years. People have strong opinions on certain subjects. PETA doesn't hold back on their opinions.

that's true. no one has said anything bad about PETA supporters, just the organization itself.

Well, PETA is the group that values animal life over human lives. I think animal rights are important, but there's a huge difference between picketing KFC for the way they abuse chickens before they slaughter them or for Michael Vick's actions for instance, and trivilizing the death of a guy from Canada who was decapitated on a bus and saying it's the same as eating chicken.

You can support the very basis of what PETA is supposed to be about and think that some of they things they do and say are questionable. Their original mission statement was commendable but PETA have turned into a punchline for some of their antics and statements, many of which Cathie already mention a few posts back.

Why is it so gross. You'll drink milk out of a cows tit but not a womans?

Exactly. I'll eat a hamburger but not human flesh.

What's so bad about it? You add a little red crushed pepper with barbeque sauce and you have yourself a meal with a side order of rice. ;)

If it's been sitting out a couple of days, that might not be rice! Make sure nothing's moving unless you like added protein!

(sorry - couldn't resist)! ;)
