View Full Version : anyone into vinyl here?
MusicJunkie 09-23-2008, 09:19 PM Last Christmas, my dad got me an expensive turntable to hook up with my stereo and the sound quality with it is amazing. In the meantime, I've started becoming a record collector because I have something to play them on and they sound excellent on my turntable. I have over 150 albums and 12" singles now. Especially good because I don't purchase CD's anymore because I have an iPod, but many current albums are available on wax, so I've been able to add the latest by Coldplay, Madonna, R.E.M., Janet Jackson, Portishead, Ting Tings, Hot Chip, Mariah Carey, Weezer and others into my collection (I am anticipating the new Killers on wax in November). Plus, we have a place here called Half Priced Music And Books which has an extensive clearance vinyl section which changes almost every other week, I have gotten a slew of albums from anywhere between a quarter to a dollar.
Anyone else either rediscovering vinyl or never stopped? To me there's just something about owning something on vinyl that a CD or MP3 can never replace.
tv star collector 09-24-2008, 08:19 AM Sooner or later, everything old is new again. Like you, I bought a new turntable only a few years ago (actually, a combination radio-turntable-cassette player-CD player; at K-Mart). I had a lot of records, which I had
transferred to tapes .. but many of the tapes have worn out. So, ironically,
now I am listening to the records again! Vinyl has its advantages and dis-
advantages (the most obvious being that the stylus--needle--has to be
replaced eventually). One great thing about record albums is the cover
artwork is much bigger; a CD cover is like a postage stamp by comparison!
And I'm old enough to remember when albums came with all sorts of extras
(e.g., The Beatles' Sgt. Pepper had cut-outs and their "White Album"
had 8 x 10 glossies of each of the Fab Four).
MickeyMac 09-24-2008, 05:37 PM Now you're talking
Records all the way for me baby. I only buy vinyl. I only get CD's if its something I want that wasnt done on record, otherwise I want it on record.
No MP3, or Ipods in my home
Totally old school all the way:D :D
SBTB Geek 09-24-2008, 09:27 PM I've been contemplating on starting a collection. My parents have some original releases by Bob Dylan, Beatles, lots of 80's stuff... Madonna, Michael, etc.
There's a store here called Amoeba that has an amazing vinyl collection, including new releases that including BOTH a vinyl and DIGITAL recording. It's a win/win.
I just have to find a good record player first.

I notice this a lot too. I know Coldplay's Viva La Vida, Madonna's Hard Candy, The B-52's Funplex, R.E.M.'s Accelerate and a few others have a bonus CD copy along with the vinyl. And quite a few current albums that don't have a cd instead has a download code with it.
I think it's a nice way to slowly edge vinyl back into the mainstream (granted, it'll never be what it was in the day, but it has seemed to find its niche market). I think if you keep a record in good shape, it can sound amazing with the right turntable and stereo.
SBTB Geek 09-24-2008, 10:19 PM The way sales are going, vinyl's sales are going to surpass CD's in no time.

I think the difference with vinyl and CD buyers is that vinyl buyers seem to have more of a loyalty to the format and regardless of if they buy a digital copy, having a copy of the album on vinyl is irreplaceable. Whereas cd's are ugly and unattractive if you have an iPod and unnecessary these days.
The only thing that sucks is that recent albums are in such limited vinyl pressings that they're gone if you don't snatch it up ASAP. For instance, I'd love to have "Confessions On A Dance Floor" on vinyl, but copies are already fetching over $70 on ebay. Luckily, I did find a copy of MJ's HIStory (which goes for over $100 at Amazon and the sort) for $15 on vinyl a week ago at Half Priced Books, with all inserts included and mint
MusicJunkie 09-24-2008, 11:42 PM here's the list of the vinyl I have so far. Most of it I've found used for $1 or less (well, besides newer albums). There's still some glaring omissions that I plan to eventually fix, like The Beatles.

Zoneboy 09-24-2008, 11:51 PM I have a bunch of vinyl Lp's and 45's that I need to unload on eBay. You can often find a decent selection at the Goodwill or other thrift stores. I recently found an 8-track set of the White Album by the Beatles. It was a 2-tape set with the original box and Apple/Capitol issued 2 versions of it. The first one was all white and the second all black which is the one I found at Goodwill for 50 cents. Finding Beatle's 8-tracks isn't easy and the White Album is rarely found with the box unless it's sealed.

hmmm, anything I might be interested in? I am looking for some Bowie (I see Let's Dance and Tonight used all the time but won't buy those until I have at least one RCA album in my collection), Stones (namely "Some Girls"), Madonna (namely "Like A Prayer" and after) and post-"Lovesexy" Prince are the biggies I'm wanting.
MickeyMac 09-25-2008, 05:56 PM I dont know what anyone's budget is here, but for turntables, I cant reccomend enough the Technics 1200. Its basically the top of the line for turntables. Only draw back is the run between $400-$500. There is always the option of getting a second hand one. Those babies last!!!!!!!!!!!
