NEW YORK - Clay Aiken is finally confirming what many people already knew: He's gay. The cover of the latest People magazine shows Aiken holding his infant son, Parker Foster Aiken, with the headline: "Yes, I'm Gay." The cover also has the quote: "I cannot raise a child to lie or hide things."
The magazine has an interview with Aiken and confirmed that he was on the cover but refused to release the article to The Associated Press until Wednesday.
The baby's mother is Aiken's friend and record producer Jaymes Foster.
Aiken, who gained fame as the runner-up on "American Idol" in 2003, rarely addressed the frequent rumors about his sexuality. In an interview with The Associated Press two years ago, he said: "I don't really feel like I have anybody to answer to but myself and God and the people I love."
The multiplatinum singer recently released the CD "On My Way Here" and made his Broadway debut this spring in "Monty Python's Spamalot."

What?
My God, I am shocked! Shocked and in a state of disbelief!
Unbelievable! I...
Really, is anyone surprised?
;)
Cactus Jack 09-23-2008, 08:10 PM LOL should NOT have taken him 5 years to admit! Why did it?
Cactus Jack 09-23-2008, 08:11 PM DUH!
*Pleasant Tomorrow* 09-23-2008, 08:29 PM LOL should NOT have taken him 5 years to admit! Why did it?
Probably because it's really nobody's business and he didn't want to face the scrutiny, so I don't blame him. Good for him though for finally saying, in so many words, screw it. We all knew anyway. :p

Yeah, not a surprise. That's why all the ladies loved him.
TripperFan 09-23-2008, 08:50 PM Probably because it's really nobody's business and he didn't want to face the scrutiny, so I don't blame him. Good for him though for finally saying, in so many words, screw it. We all knew anyway. :p
That's the killer though - to me, he drew even more attention to himself when dodging the question. I agree - totally nobody's business, but these days, a celeb has to know that if they dodge certain questions, the media is just going to hop on it.
Yah, like it was a news flash or something. Big deal - you like guys better - now lets get on with it - you're still a great singer. To me, he wanted the free publicity.
MusicJunkie 09-23-2008, 08:51 PM this was a little surprising (not that he's gay, but that he'd come out) considering the way he used to respond to the rumors before. All in all, it's his prerogative and he figured now is the time so good for him. Gotta love the airbrushing on the People cover, he hasn;t been that thin in years
TVFactFan 09-23-2008, 08:56 PM Expect Jay Leno to be WILD tonight-lol

ROFL - probably - and Letterman.....
MonarC 09-23-2008, 09:07 PM I knew it! Good for him for finally coming out. Im sure he feels better now. :)
eltonfan80 09-23-2008, 09:12 PM DUH!
 ain't that the truth
Janice 09-23-2008, 09:25 PM Wow, I'm shocked.
Kidding. I'm glad he finally came out and told the world what they already knew. It's almost a non-issue these days, in Hollywood anyway.
*InThisMoment* 09-23-2008, 11:42 PM OMG, SHOCKING!!!!!!!!!11
LOL just kidding. I'm happy for him. It's about time he finally comes out. I hope he finds someone who will make him happy, and I think he will be a good dad.
veggie-tari-jenn 09-24-2008, 12:15 AM awesome good for him...wish him only happiness:)
Zoneboy 09-24-2008, 12:22 AM DUH!
Agreed which is why I didn't add the words Breaking News to the thread title.
MusicJunkie 09-24-2008, 12:23 AM I am surprised he has fans on his own message board who are seriously shocked and in disbelief. Come on, it's Clay Aiken!!! I mean, Boy George didn't officially come out of the closet until around 1993 but who didn't know he was gay by then? LOL.
And in five years, it'll be David Archuleta's turn.
browneyes106 09-24-2008, 01:16 AM Maybe he didn't admit five years ago because at that he gained a lot of popularity as being a Christian and maybe he thought he would lose some of his fanbase.
LuLu Rogers 09-24-2008, 01:34 AM I'm glad he finally came out. I told my mom when he was on American Idol that he was gay, but she didn't believe me. :p
*InThisMoment* 09-24-2008, 01:37 AM Good for him. It's about time. YOU DO YOU, CLAYTON! :grady:
MusicJunkie 09-24-2008, 01:43 AM And in five years, it'll be David Archuleta's turn.
lol, I was thinking Blake Lewis or Chris Richardson
MusicJunkie 09-24-2008, 01:48 AM thinking about gay American Idol rejects... first thing that comes to mind is "why couldn't it be Chris Richardson?"

Following the Aug. 8 birth of his son Parker, singer Clay Aiken is following through on a promise he made to himself as a new dad: to publicly acknowledge that he's gay.
"It was the first decision I made as a father," Aiken, 29, tells the upcoming issue of PEOPLE, on newsstands Friday. "I cannot raise a child to lie or to hide things. I wasn't raised that way, and I'm not going to raise a child to do that."
Aiken says he expects the news may overwhelm some of his fans. "Whether it be having a child out of wedlock, or whether it be simply being a homosexual, it's going to be a lot," said Aiken, who returned to Broadway last week as Sir Robin in Monty Python's Spamalot.
He adds that he hopes his fans "know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all. ... But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."
How He Came Out to His Family:
The born-again Christian singer also reveals how he told his mother Faye he's gay four years ago. After dropping off his younger brother Brett, who was being deployed to Iraq, at Camp Lejeune, "I started crying in the car," Aiken remembers. "It was dark. I was sitting there, thinking to myself. I don't know why I started thinking about it ... I just started bawling. She made me pull over the car and it just came out."
So what was his mom's reaction? "She started crying. She was obviously somewhat stunned. But she was very supportive and very comforting." Even now, Aiken admits, "She still struggles with things quite a bit, but she's come a long way."
As for his own child, Aiken tells PEOPLE that Parker – who was conceived via in vitro fertilization with his best friend, music producer Jaymes Foster – will be raised in an environment that is "accepting and allowing him to be happy."
Says Aiken: "I have no idea if he'll be gay or straight. It's not something I'll have anything to do with, or that he'll have anything to do with. It's already probably up inside the code there ... No matter what the situation you're in, if you're raised in a loving environment, that's the most important thing."
Lodee 09-24-2008, 08:30 AM Well now maybe people will leave him alone. Good for him.
OH Nuts! 09-24-2008, 08:46 AM One of the BIG down sides to fame and fortune must be the loss of privacy. Everybody (the rags and paparazzi) want to investigate every nook and cranny. People coming at you every which way. Slips of paper slipped under restroom stalls for autographs....the list goes on.
Personally I wouldn't want to discuss my sex life with one and all but when you're a celeb you have to accept that this is going to happen...the media is simply not going to leave you alone. So probably the best thing to do is just be open...fans (if they are really fans) will still love you and it takes the wind out of the media's sails (a little bit.) How often, for example, to you see big 100 pt headlines about Elton John and his partner? The focus should be on an artist's work but go tell that to the media.
I heard it rumored what one famous 60s activist said when asked about her bisexuality she said "I'll talk about my sexuality when we stop killing babies with napalm" (well, something along those lines.) That to me, puts things in perspective (somewhat)
TripperFan 09-24-2008, 11:16 AM thinking about gay American Idol rejects... first thing that comes to mind is "why couldn't it be Chris Richardson?"
LOL - Clay just doesn't do it for ya eh? (I gotta admit - what's with the hair styles lately? He's not still playing in Spam-A-Lot - time he gives up the cut)!

MusicJunkie 09-24-2008, 04:13 PM I am surprised at some of the reactions from some of his fans on other forums. They demand an apology for him "lying" to them and the sort. Come on, it isn't the easiest thing in the world to be a pop star who is in the closet.
The one that I thought was funniest and the most backwards was the comparison to Michael Jackson. I agree that Clay doesn't have any sex appeal, but how can you compare him with a 50 year old who hangs around with children who aren't his children or nephews?
All in all, I just find it funny he had some fans who were so deluded that they believed he was straight after PerezHilton reported the firsthand account about him cybering with some military dude on Manhunt, LOL
ThomasE 09-24-2008, 04:36 PM surprised jay leno say nothing about it

Jude The Obscure 09-24-2008, 06:33 PM What would be shocking is if some guy who was thought of to be this great heterosexual, popular with the ladies, announced it.
JulieSomoski 09-24-2008, 06:47 PM The shocking part is that he actually admitted it
If he was gay all along, why didn't he just admit it 5 years ago instead of dealing with all the rumors???? It's not like we wouldn't have believed him or anything :D

I think because he has a lot of fans who are really backwards when it comes to things like that. Some of the fan reactions are completely embarassing because you'd think people would be a little more intelligent in 2008.
http://www.afterelton.com/blog/dennis/aikens-coming-out-as-gay-is-not-really-a-claynational-tragedy read here, it's so scary and funny at the same time. Are some people that naive? Makes me wonder if there are people out there who still believe Jodie Foster is unmarried because she's still looking for the right man
SimpsonsFan 09-24-2008, 08:35 PM I kinda suspected, and it's good that he's being open, he'll feel much better living his life...but why did he have a child? i mean is a bisexual? or was this in an attempt to appear straight?
ThomasE 09-24-2008, 08:59 PM It was still shocking to me because I was thrown off. I suspected it but then he would not admit so I left if alone. I was shocked when I saw this message this afternoon and said "it is true after all". I noticed a little pattern with Clay. When confronted about something, he gets defensive or bounces around the topic or he gets a worried look. When asked if he was gay back in 2006, he responded, "what I do in my personal life is my business". He got mad at Barbara Walters for asking him questions about his sexuality.
On "Tyra", she was going to ask him that one question that everyone wanted an answer to. He got scared and nervous. Then it turned out that she wanted him to sing a song (I think. Could have been something different?) All I know is that he was relieved.
Then when he was interviewed in 2003 by "Rolling Stone", he was asked by the interviewer if he masturbated and Clay kept bouncing around the question with responses like "I hope that was a question and not a proposal" and he laughed. Then when asked again he laughed and said "you need to stop that!"

IIRC, his friend wanted a baby and he practically played sperm donor
Hollow 09-24-2008, 11:06 PM how did people know before? i found a list of "15 signs clay aiken was gay" which really didn't help because all of the list items were just pictures of him.

I think the whole Manhunt.com scandal that Perez broke last year pretty much outted him to the world. He had cybersex with some guy on there who took some screencaps of the webcam and sent it to Perez.
TripperFan 09-25-2008, 09:42 AM What would be shocking is if some guy who was thought of to be this great heterosexual, popular with the ladies, announced it.

I guess my gay-dar doesn't work too well.
SimpsonsFan 09-25-2008, 03:55 PM Ya, one of my friends revealed he was gay, and i'd known him for months and no1 wud've guessed that, he doesn't fall into any stereotype whatsoever and it's very surprising, but he briefly saw my brother once and reminded me of that and said "by the way, he's def.ly gay" and i didn't believe him, i've grown up w/my brother and never once thought he was gay, and then just a month ago, my brother opened up. I couldn't believe he was right, had my friend not brought it to my attention, i would've been ever more shocked. It's interesting how gay people can detect each other....but wow, clay's friend knew he was gay and just wanted to play spermdonor, wonder if there was more to it?

well, as a gay person, I don't think gaydar is always there, sometimes it's wishful thinking (I mean, is there a gay man alive who doesn't want David Beckham on the team?)
With Clay, I never watched him on American Idol or anything, but I always got the vibe in interviews that he seemed like he was either gay or bi. Not sure what it was, it's not like I ever had a crush on him but there was always something about him that stood out to me. Same for Lance Bass, I remember thinking he was gay the very first time I saw N'Sync on MTV... I secretly wanted it to be Justin or JC, but Lance definately seemed to have whatever it was that set my radar off.
The only thing that really disgusts me is the fan reaction I've seen on Clay fan forums over this. I see a lot of intolerance and "it's all changed now, I can't listen to him again" BS. Have these people ever heard of Elton John? Elton has been out for decades and I really can't tell a huge difference between the music he put out before he came out, and the music he put out afterwards. He was still the same Elton, just that people were more aware of what he was attracted to. That's why I find it sick that people suddenly think Clay is a totally different person and that everything has been an act just because he didn't feel the need to disclose his orientation before now. We've seen from Elton's career that he didn't really change much in the 30 years since he came out, so why are people so worried that now that Clay is open, that everything he represented before is gone? It's not like you can't be gay and also Christian and love your mother and believe in small town values and whatever. Same with Ellen, she was a little "in your face" when she first came out, but for the most part, her demeanor hasn't changed and she gained back a lot of fans with her talk show that she lost when she came out on her sitcom. People realized that Ellen is still the light-hearted humorous observationalist that she was before 1997. So why are people so afraid of Clay changing?

People realized that Ellen is still the light-hearted humorous observationalist that she was before 1997. So why are people so afraid of Clay changing when we've seen Ellen and Elton?
Chocoholic 09-25-2008, 06:43 PM Sorta OT, but I don't understand people who are against gay celebrities coming out, but these same people have nothing wrong with celebrities who have multiple pre-marital and extra-marital affairs, who marry and divorce several times, who drink and do drugs, who lie or gamble or steal, or have no respect for anyone but themselves. If these people bothered to read the Bible, they would find that those actions are considered sins too. It also says something in the Gospel of Matthew (Don't know the exact chapter and verse.) "Do not judge lest you be judged." There's also the story of Jesus telling the people who wanted to execute a woman who committed adultery "Let he who has never sinned cast the first stone."
Personally, I think people should be more outspoken against rape, pedophilia, domestic violence, and adultery. I think those are far worse sins than loving an adult of the same gender. I'll get off my soapbox now. :D

yea, I noticed that too. Angelina Jolie is treated as a living saint and the reincarnation of Audrey Hepburn, yet everyone and their mother knows that she broke up Brad Pitt and Jennifer Aniston's marriage, and all is forgiven on that account. I don't know as much about Clay as his devoted fans do but I can't picture him knowingly breaking a relationship up.
Cactus Jack 09-25-2008, 07:36 PM LOL Conan made a joke about it saying the report came from DUH! Magazine LOL
Chocoholic 09-25-2008, 07:38 PM I seriously did not believe that Clay is gay. Now Ryan Seacrest...
Janice 09-25-2008, 08:57 PM The overwheming majority of his fans are taking it well, and that's the important thing. He has a very strong fanbase. People will always disagree about anything and everything. That's just the way it is. I was happy to read that only a few have expressed disapproval, and it's no big deal to most. I like Clay, always have. I'm not a fan of his music, but I like him as a person, what I've seen. I never liked the way he was cornered in interviews about his sexuality. It's nobody's business, and that goes for Barbara Walters.
Fans don't own a celebrity. The celeb owes them only what they paid for, be it a concert, movie, CD, etc. They don't have to stop eating dinner in a restaurant to sign autographs. They have private lives. I realize they give up a lot of their privacy, but still, nobody owns them. They owe their fans a performance. Anything extra is a gift.

As fans of Clay Aiken (http://www.people.com/people/clay_aiken) react to the news that he is gay (http://www.people.com/article/0,,20228488,00.html), the singer himself has written about his gratitude he feels about the support he's received so far.
"We'll 'talk' more later," Aiken, 29, writes on his Web site (http://www.clayonline.com/)'s message board. "but, suffice it to say, for the first time in recent memory, I am speechless. I'm so proud to know and love all of you."
He adds, "My family is so much larger than Parker, Jaymes, mom, Brett, etc. It extends to each of you. And I couldn't be more blessed."
Aiken posted the message Tuesday night after a performance of Broadway's Monty Python's Spamalot, where he has resumed the role (http://www.people.com/article/0,,20218821,00.html) of Sir Robin. Fans flocked to the stage door after the show to see the star, but Aiken ducked out a different exit.
Gay groups applauded Aiken (http://www.people.com/people/article/0,,20228560,00.html) on coming out, while fan reaction across the Web has been one of both surprise but support.
As of midday Wednesday, the thread on clayonline.com had more than 2,200 messages, with many saying, "I will always love and support him no matter what. His sexual orientation makes no difference to me."
Some Mixed Reactions
Still, a few "Claymates" are taking the news hard. "I'm really struggling with this one," writes one fan on claymaniacs.com (http://www.claymaniacs.com/forums/). A poster on clayaiken.com writes, "I'm only concerned that for those like me who will still support him no matter what may have some difficulty reconciling that he wasn't straight forward to begin with."
From the Clay Board (http://theclayboard.yuku.com/topic/26806/t/Upcoming-People-Magazine-Cover-and-Article-PLS-READ.htm), strollynn63 writes, "This is a gut wrenching day for The ClayNation. Somebody wake me up, I hope it's a dream," while NJ4ClayA admits, "I still love to hear him sing but I also feel he has now become like a Michael Jackson and it's a bit too weird!"
Aiken told PEOPLE he understands some fans may not react well. "[I want] to let people know that I've never intended to lie to anybody at all," he said. "But if they leave, I don't want them to leave hating me."
I seriously never thought he was gay. Then again, I thought that 'Nsync guy was gay and he isn't. (Not the one that came out. That other one.)
I guess my gay-dar doesn't work too well.
You might have thought that he wasn't gay simply because he denied it for so long (or, really, he just skirted around it, in a sense, denying it).

Purffin 09-28-2008, 08:50 PM I think most people knew anyway and its not like we are in the 1950's he should have been comfortable enough to admit it from the begining. If there are people out there who don't agree oh well . :p

Not to break your streak, but my cat knew Clay was gay. ;)
so elektrikkxx 09-29-2008, 10:27 AM I'm honestly not surprised he's gay. He doesn't really do it for me personally but I'm glad he came out as he can now be more truthful about who he is and he won't have to feel like he's hiding a major part of himself. :D
I can relate to how he would be nervous and defensive when asked/felt like he was going to be asked if he was gay, as I did the exact same thing in middle school when people asked me if I was.

TripperFan 09-29-2008, 03:10 PM who cares?
Apparently some people do. I'm waiting for the day where it doesn't matter a damn what your sexual orientation is - That's when it becomes (good) news!
Or I'm waiting for the first cover of People to see a guy on there declaring, "Yes - I'm hetrosexual".
I think we all knew it before Clay even did. ;)
