1. why are rappers always saying "yo"

2. Why are rappers always talking about their record labels?

You never heard Smokey Robinson in his records talk about Tamla
You never heard Sly & The Family Stone talk about Epic in their records
You never heard on a Sam & Dave song them yelling "Stax in the house".

This sounds a lot like the intro to a Chris Rock song.

Can't say I know the song.

Why does it matter? Yo is a slang word. Much like country people say y'all, it is territorial. They don't even talk that much about their record labels. Most of the time, record labels are mentioned in a song during the spoken part of the song, where the artist says something about the song or just talks during the beginning or end.

 Not sure where "Yo" came from it just caught on kind like sayin "what's up". When they mention the record label they are trying to advertise, and ya know 'shout out' or put in a 'plug'.

I thought "Yo" was supposed to be a greeting or something, like "hello". As for the record labels, well... you know how egos get!

Yeah, Yo is a greeting. @ these questions. A lot of people don't see the correlation with rap and the history/culture of it. But if you're a part of it like me, it comes more easy and territorial. I still listen to every other genre, so it's not like rap is an outside league or something.

Every style of music has it's "yo" like shout. Like mexican music has the "grito" ya know (aaaaaaaaahhhhahahhh) Polka has the "yip yip" :)

personally, if you don't like hip hop, don't listen to it. I am not a fan much of hip hop or country, so I generally avoid those stations. We're in an era where everything is on demand just about, so you can find plenty of stations up your alley instead of having to have something you're not into shoved down your throat like back in the 1990's.

I agree. If you don't like it, you don't have to complain about it or listen to it, there is so many options. oh and country has it's "y'all" that's their slang. They have other words but I can't think of any right now.
