View Full Version : Anyone getting this "Script Pop-Up"
Anyone getting this pop-up: A script on this page is causing Internet Explorer to run slowly. If it continues to run your computer may become unresponsive. Do you want to abort the script.
I've gotten it before on this site but it was over in the photo galleries that time, not I'm getting it on the main boards. And it's causing my computer to run really slow. Any ideas about it?
Zoneboy 09-16-2008, 07:06 PM I get it when that stupid ad for Coconut's joke book pops up. I normally don't have any problems with the ads but that one causes my pc to freeze up and until it loads I can't do a damn thing.

Same here
BarneyFife 09-16-2008, 07:11 PM I'm getting that too Ann. I thought It was just my computer.
Thanks for letting me know, I thought it was only happening to my computer.
Chocoholic 09-17-2008, 03:49 PM It's been happening to me too.
robyrob 09-17-2008, 04:10 PM try an ad blocker or disable scripts to see if that fixes it
^ How do you do that exactly?
BarneyFife 09-17-2008, 05:06 PM ^ How do you do that exactly?
Yeah, I would like to know that myself.
JulieSomoski 09-17-2008, 07:01 PM I've been getting it a lot lately - it's happened in the past, but I guess it's starting up again, and it's very annoying.
I'd disable the page scripts, but once I do that, it disables every internet page's script, so it's impossible to look at 2 things at once with doing that.
robyrob 09-17-2008, 07:02 PM well in Firefox you'd install the Adblock Plus (http://adblockplus.org/en/) and the YesScript (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/4922)(or countless other script-blocking extensions)
for Internet Explorer it becomes a lot more difficult, you could read through this:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/308260
or you could try the IE7Pro (http://www.ie7pro.com/) add-on, but i can't say how complicated it is, or if its worth the trouble for just blocking ads.
^ Thanks for the suggestions & the link. I'll give it a shot!
Identifying the specific ad is a big help in tracking it down and removing it from the rotation.
Is anyone still seeing it? I don't see anything listed for Coconut's, so it likely was already removed.
catlover79 09-19-2008, 10:03 PM I'm getting that pop-up too - both on my work and home PCs. GRRRR!!!!
Zoneboy 09-20-2008, 05:04 AM Here are a few of the ads causing the problem:

^ Yes, they're always in those yellow boxes and I've already seen a couple in just the short amount of time I've been on here tonight. And they are still causing my computer to freeze up. I couldn't figure out how to do that stuff Robyrob was talking about either.
Mr. Television 09-20-2008, 09:20 PM It's still happeneing to me too. It just happened about 15 minutes ago.
*ClassicPinUp* 09-20-2008, 10:47 PM Yep, same here! Everything freezes up until those ads are done loading.
Good Grief, it's happened 4 times in less than 5 minutes. I'm gonna log off before my blood pressure starts rising. lol! Try it again tommorrow.

The Great One 09-21-2008, 04:54 PM Since I have started using the Firefox browser with Adblock I haven't had any of the problems that are talked about in this thread.
If you click yes to stop the script running, it shouldn't continue to appear. It isn't a virus or anything malicious. It appears to be just bad code. More of an annoyance more than anything. It has been tracked down and should no longer appear in the next few hours. Sorry for the inconvenience.
MikeLutton 09-21-2008, 05:33 PM i have been getting it to not today just hope it stops its making em mad msn been giving me issues as well
Mr. Television 09-21-2008, 06:37 PM It just came up for me right now.
I said it would be a few hours before it was removed. It takes several hours for the advertising agencies to update. There is different code between the message boards vs. photo galleries.

I'm sorry. I misunderstood you. I'm glad its being taken care of. It has been a hastle.

Ohio8 09-29-2008, 08:11 PM I"m now having problems uploading to the photo galleries!!!!!!
^ I didn't have any trouble yesterday afternoon with it but I know that can change in an instant from my past experience with it. (lol!) Maybe it will work better for you today.
Mr. Television 10-11-2008, 08:54 PM Is their another ad causing anybody any trouble? I had to shut my computer off twice today just to get it unstuck. Its worst than the last time because before it would unstick on its own. Both times were on SO. The last time was a few minutes ago and I noticed a fashion ad at the top of the page. I didn't check what the ad was the first time it stuck today. Just want to know if its just happening to me.
Me too, when I first logged on here tonight, my computer froze and it didn't unfreeze. I had to turn it off and back on again. I also got a warning from my security system when an ad popped up on this site. But I don't know which ad it was. The warning said "Virus Name - Exploit.JS.PDF.D" Any ideas about it?

I haven't had a virus alert yet but it did freeze real bad. I wish I could remember the ad but I know it was some kind of fashion ad. I even had to turn the computer off at the switch because nothing worked on my computer. For a few minutes I didn't think I was going to be able to get back on.
Brian Damage 10-11-2008, 11:39 PM I get that virus pop up too, :grr:
qwerty 10-12-2008, 11:54 AM I'm having the same problem too. It has happened both yesterday and today. Before it would let me say not to run the script but now my virus blocker will run for a few minutes before letting me use SO again.
catlover79 10-12-2008, 02:56 PM Same here - those stupid banner ads again. GRRRRRR...
Mr. Television 10-12-2008, 08:17 PM It just happened to me again. This things going to ruin my computer. Its the ad that says Get the latest spring fashions for free. That's the same one that was up the last time my computer froze.
qwerty 10-12-2008, 08:29 PM Just happened to me too. The message said "Exploit-MS06-014 (Virus)"
Thanks for the heads up. We are investigating it. Many of the advertisers aren't labeled in an easily idenitifiable way, so tracking some of these down is like finding the proverbial needle in a haystack.
If it's a widespread problem, I usually see people complaining about it on the Burst Media forum. Does this sound familiar? I copied and pasted it:
I've been getting scattered complaints from visitors over the last week or two about ads for PerformanceOptimizer (an application that reports false or exaggerated virus threats) suddenly popping up on their screens while they were browsing our site.
---------------
Does anybody have the Firebug add-on for Firefox?
First, I have found a great way to solve the "where is this ad coming from" problem. For Firefox users, download an add-on called Firebug. This tool allows you to inspect each element of a website, including the ads. It shows every step of the way that a script takes, from request to delivery.

My PC froze-up earlier tonight and it was that ad that did it but I didn't get a virus warning.

Yea I haven't got a virus warning with that ad but that's the 3rd time my computer froze on it.
Jude The Obscure 10-13-2008, 11:32 AM My puter froze up 3 times yesterday coming here and I'm afraid it will do it again--so I'm doing a quick post and then leaving. My AVG keeps telling me of an adware threat it removed every time I reboot. This seriously needs to be checked out. I'm afraid until it is solved, I may have to stay away. :(
TeeVeeCloset 10-13-2008, 06:47 PM A new problem has occured that the new (extremely annoying) nearly full screen moving pop ups are causing (at least on my computer) to tell me "microsoft explorer has encountered a problem and must close" or the page entirely freezes up.....also even though pop-up ads are needed to support the site, there is nothing more annoying then to close the ad only to have it re-appear the moment you go to another page on the site. I know a similar problem happened about a month ago......anyone else having this problem????????
