I just realized something, I think the writers made a mistake because they
wrote 2 episodes about Jessica's baptism. The first one was in the episode
"The Loan" her baptism was mentioned but they never showed it
because the main storyline focused was the loan for Lionel and Jenny's house;
remember Helen told Jenny she had a perfect baptism dress for Jessica and
also at the end when they all went into the elevator, Jenny mentioned that
after the baptism they could stop at the new house to take a look. And of
course the other episode is "Man of the Cloth" when Florence was asked to sing at Jessica's baptism and George objected and he pretended to be a minister, in this episode Mike Evans had already quit the show but in "the Loan" he was still
on and he attended Jessica's baptism. Can someone clear this up for me, I think
I'am right but I could also be wrong.

Yep. I noticed this same thing. They were stretching for ideas by the time Men of the Cloth was done. It's basically a celebrity based episode- if I remember right they put it on during February sweeps. Also, what religion baptises/christens a 2 year old child? Just signs that although still very popular in the ratings, the show was getting worse.

Damm he quit the show again? I guess he felt his role would be different the second time around but was pushed to the side for florence and bently. But how big could his role have been when he was supposed to be living on his own? So that was the problem right there

Didn't Mike Evans admit to having emotional problems- I read someplace that he never really wanted to be an actor anyway.

The MLK Flashback show is the only ep with just George, Louise and Lionel in it. I wouldn't have minded more with just these three or with them and Jenny. Florence was OK, but she worked better in smaller doses. In 81, Paul Benedict and Marla Gibbs were both gone from the show so had Mike stuck it out he would have been given more to do, but considering that during that time they did an episode about he and Jenny separating (which was a retread of The Break Up in year 2) it seems that the writers didn't quite know what to do with his character. I can think of at least 6 plots that they could've done with him in the early 80s and if Berlinda Tolbert still showed up by herself (and she was the least interesting of all the main characters) surely they could've written interesting stories for Mike Evans- but my feeling is that he wanted out of the show so they didn't bother to write them.
