AT40 Extra:Monday Monday-The Mamas & The Papas (Love this song, but what's it doing in here?)

Andrea, back in the early 1980s on the AT40 shows they used to play the #1 songs of the 1960s in the middle of the show, for whatever reason.

Actually, by this time they had stopped the AT40 Archives feature. This was
just an extra song during the show.

* - I'm a little hazy on these.

That just goes to show how much better it is at the beginning because of the increased likelihood it's one I have never heard or haven't since it came out because of its peak position on the charts. I've said it before, but here in Dayton WMMX "Mix" 107.7 plays a retro "American Top 40" every Saturday from 6-10 a. m.

you likely know the Joan Jett song but wasn't sure the title.

"And I Am Telling You" actually had a big renaissance a year and a half ago because of the Dreamgirls movie, since this song comes from that. The Jennifer Holliday version was a hit when the play hit Broadway in 1981/1982

Come to think of it, I think you're right. I never noticed them until the last couple of years when WMMX added the 1980 and 1981 AT40 archives to its Saturday playlist. I know that on the November 9, 1985, show they played "Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald" by Gordon Lightfoot because that day was the eve of the ten-year anniversary of that ship's sinking--and WMMX plays this particular retro AT40 every year in early November.

Now that I think about it, ISTR a 1980 retro AT40 that featured the #1 hits of the 1970s; they played "Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward, which came out the year before! :lol:

The AT40 Archives feature was introduced on the first 4 hour AT40 show on
October 7 1978:
October 7 1978-June 21 1980-#1 songs of the 1970s
June 28 1980-November 28 1981-#1 songs of the 1960s

The feature was essentially discontinued because of the impending purchase
of Watermark by ABC Radio Enterprises.

Interestingly, on September 12 WMMX "Mix" 107.7, as well as other stations broadcasting the 1980s "AT40" flashback, played this exact lineup, and I couldn't help but remember this thread!
