Horrid Memories
Written by Katie Bencken
It was a regular day at the division, Jinny and Magda were talking, CD and Angela were fighting, and Kate was in her office thumbing through papers. Kate gets up and walks out of her office, “Cases,” she called everyone. “Magda Jinny, you guys have to sort the cases, I know you’ve done this before so I don’t think you need further instruction.” She told them, Jinny gave her a look and sighed. “CD Angela, you guys have a suicide. Tara Wesly, 13, she slit her wrists. You two get to find out why.”
FLASHBACK
15-year-old CD was in the kitchen holding a knife to her wrist, she was crying very hard. ‘Why did this happen to me,’ she thought, ‘what did I do to deserve this?’ CD started crying even harder.
END FLASHBACK
CD jumped at the memory. She then took the folder and said, “Okay Captain. We got it.”
Angela looked at CD; she looked kind of pale, like something wasn’t right. But she didn’t say anything.
When the two of them got up to leave Angela looked at CD. She knew that something was wrong, like something was bothering her. But didn’t want to ask CD about it. They got to the car, got in, and headed for Sara Wesly’s house. That was Tara’s mom. CD wasn’t really concentrating much on the case or going anywhere. Angela was driving but could tell from the silence that something was really wrong. Normally the two were either fighting or talking about something.
When they got to Sara Wesly’s house CD walked up to the door and knocked on it. When she answered CD looked at her and said, “Hi, I’m Inspector De Lorenzo but you can call me CD and this is my partner Inspector Angela Reide. Are you Sara Wesly?”
“Yes I am.” Sara looked at them, knowing they were there about Tara.
“We are here to talk to you about Tara.” Angela told her, hoping not to get her too upset.
“Yes, please come in.” As she led them into the house CD and Angela saw two younger kids sitting on the couch crying, “Anna, Beth go to your room, I need to talk to these people alone.” Their mother told them in a comforting voice. It was obvious that she cared a lot for her kids.
“Ms. Wesly, how old are your other two daughters?” Angela asked, wondering what it would be like to lose your older sister.
“They’re twins, nine-years-old. They are still very upset about Tara.” Sara looked at the two inspectors, CD had a look of sympathy on her face, thinking what it would have been like for her mother if she would have commit suicide, “What do you need to know?”
“Ms. Wesly, are you and your husband still together?”
“Yes, he’s working right now. Having three, well now two kids makes it very difficult to support us. I am going to night school and he works so we have enough money.” Sara started to cry.
“Ma’am, was Tara acting different in any way?” CD asked her.
“She was upset, she came home from school very mad yesterday. When we found her this morning she was dead.” She started crying harder.
CD walked over to her and started rubbing her back. Angela looked at her in shock. She had never seen CD act this way before.
“Ms. Wesly, do you know of anyone we could talk to who would know why she was upset or do you or your husband know?” Angela asked her.
“I’m not sure. Maybe her best friend Trianna may. And possibly her teachers, Mrs. Bubb, Mrs. Paisley, Mr. Dawse, Mr. Sarls, Mr. Rutledge, and Mrs. Hoffort.” Sara told them in between sobs. She was very upset and CD wanted to comfort her. But in doing that Angela would find out about her past, which she didn’t really want.
“Thanks Ms. Wesly. Oh and what is Trianna’s last name and where can we reach her?” CD told her. She figured it wouldn’t hurt to talk to Trianna.
“Trianna Benken, her address is 1323 S. 45th street. Her phone number is 476-8774.”
“Thanks Ms. Wesly. We’ll contact you with any news.” CD reassured her. Her and Angela got up to leave, they went to the door and left.
When they got outside Angela looked at her and asked her, “CD what was that in there? Rubbing her back…that’s not anything I’ve seen from you before.”
“Oh so it’s wrong for me to care. That’s great. I can’t care about Sara Wesly because she lost her oldest daughter. That’s right I forgot, when you’re a cop you can’t have any feelings at all. Thanks for reminding me Angela!” CD snapped at her.
FLASHBACK
CD is standing there, she was all alone. Crying she slowly started to cut her wrist. She started crying even harder, then she looked at her bleeding wrist, realized what she was doing and threw the knife. She started screaming and crying very loud. But no one came. Her mom was at work; no one else was there. She had nowhere to go, no one to turn to. CD was going to die.
END FLASHBACK
CD looked at Angela she was fighting back tears. She couldn’t cry in front of her partner. She shook her head so she could stop thinking about her memory. It was a horrible thought that she just wanted to go away.
“CD, sorry. I didn’t mean it defensively. I just had never seen that side of you before and it surprised me.”
“It’s okay, I shouldn’t have snapped at you. Well, Trianna would be in school right now, and I’m guessing she went to the same school as Tara. At least she’s in the same district. We should go talk to her.”
“Yeah.” Angela agreed with CD.
As the two of them got in the car Angela was driving, “CD, I’m just wondering is something wrong? Because this morning when Captain was explaining the case you jumped and looked kind of pale. And just then you I don’t know were thinking about something. I just want to know.”
“No Angela nothing’s wrong I’m fine. Now for your information I would just like to get to work on this case.”
“Fine. I was just saying if you need to talk I’m here.” Angela said. She knew something was wrong, CD just wouldn’t tell her.
The two of them got to the school Tara was attending. They walked into the office and saw the secretary sitting there.
“Hi, I’m Inspector DeLorenzo and this is Inspector Reide, we are wondering if Trianna Benken attends this school?” CD asked the secretary.
“Uh yes, she is in classroom 354 on the 2nd floor. Why do you need to talk to her? Is she in trouble or anything?” She asked, hoping that this student with a 4.0 grade point average wasn’t in trouble.
“No, we just have to ask her a few questions pursuing a police matter.” CD told her.
“As in what?”
“A suicide.” CD didn’t want to go into details on this; she just wanted to forget that her case was about that.
“Alright, you may see her.” She told the two inspectors.
CD and Angela walked out of the office and went to room 354 on the 2nd floor. It was beginning algebra; “I hated this subject when I was a kid.” CD commented to Angela.
“Oh CD shut up and let’s just do our job.”
CD and Angela stepped in the room, “We need to speak to Trianna Benken please.” Angela spoke up as they went in.
A young girl, curly blond hair, blue eyes, about 5’4’’ stood up, “I’m Trianna Benken. What do you need to talk to me about?”
“Trianna why don’t we step in the hall.” CD said to her, Angela nodded.
“That would be fine. Mr. Dawse, would that be okay?” She asked him, she was very polite.
“Well first may I ask who you two ladies are?” Mr. Dawse asked them.
“I’m Inspector CD DeLorenzo, and this is my partner Inspector Angela Reide. We just need to ask Trianna a few questions.” CD told him, she was really hoping he didn’t want to go into details on what. If so Angela could take over.
“Inspectors?” Trianna questioned them, “I didn’t do anything wrong. This must be some mistake.”
Angela looked at her, “Trianna we need to ask you a few questions about Tara Wesly.”
“Why do you need to talk to Trianna about Tara?” Mr. Dawse asked them.
Angela looked at CD with a ‘you tell him’ look on her face while CD gave Angela the same look, “Well Mr. Dawse you see Tara, well, she commit suicide last night and according to her mother Trianna was her best friend.” Angela ended up telling him. The whole class just gasped at the thought of Tara Wesly committing suicide.
“Trianna, go talk to them and tell them what they need to know. Then come back to class. The class will talk about what happened when you get back in.” He told her. Trianna wiped a tear from her eye nodded to her teacher and walked over to CD and Angela. As the three of them walked into the hall Trianna looked at them.
“Is it true? Did Tara kill herself?” Trianna questioned them, she couldn’t think of happy perky Tara trying to kill herself.
“Yes, Tara did commit suicide. She slit her wrists. We need to find out why she did it.” Angela told her. Trying to comfort her.
“What do you need to know?” Trianna asked them, her voice shaking.
“Trianna was Tara acting different in any way lately?” CD asked her, she herself was trying very hard not to cry.
“Well, she wasn’t as happy and perky as usual, but that’s it. She was still pretty happy though.”
“Trianna, can you think of any reason that Tara might want to kill herself?” Angela asked her, she could tell now that something was wrong with CD.
“No. Can we do this later or something? This all comes as a shock to me. She was my best friend. I thought she’d confide every problem she had to me. May I please call you or meet with you at a later time Inspectors.” Trianna asked them in a very polite manner.
“Yes Trianna, this is my card,” CD said as she handed her a card, “Please do call me at a later time so we can talk to you about this. Just learning a little bit more about Tara could help us.”
“Thank you Inspector DeLorenzo. To talk to you about this should I have my mother or a lawyer present?” Trianna asked her.
“If your mother would like to be there she can. But you are not under arrest for anything or a suspect so you do not need to have a lawyer present.” Angela told her. She could tell Trianna was scared.
“Thank you.” Trianna told them.
“Thanks Trianna, and please call me.” CD told her as she walked back into her classroom. “Now for us, I say we get some lunch. It’s 12:15.” CD looked at Angela.
“Sure, what did you have in mind?” She asked her.
“I don’t know, Anchorside sound okay?”
“Yeah.”
CD and Angela headed out to the car.
FLASHBACK
CD continued to look at her wrist. She was screaming. ‘I don’t want to die at a young age,’ CD thought, ‘Oh God, somebody help me. Why did I want to do this in the first place??’ CD continued to scream and cry as her wrist bled more and more. She couldn’t just let it bleed. She didn’t want to die.
END FLASHBACK
CD was really holding back tears. No matter how hard she tried to forget she couldn’t. Angela looked at CD; they were still walking to the car. She could tell that something was really wrong. CD jumped, she didn’t want Angela to know something was wrong, she knew that Angela knew something was wrong.
“CD I’M SICK OF YOU NOT TELLING MY WHAT’S WRONG!!!” She yelled at her, “WOULD YOU PLEASE TELL ME WHAT’S WRONG. I’M YOUR PARTNER AND FRIEND; I DESERVE TO KNOW. WHAT IS WRONG WITH YOU? THIS IS AFFECTING OUR WORK TOO.”
“Geez Angela I’m sorry. Yes something’s wrong I was just trying not to lead on.”
“Well then what’s wrong??” Angela was bugging CD to tell her what was wrong.
“Calm down.” CD got in the car and so did Angela.
“I’m not going until you tell me what the hell has been wrong with you lately.”
“When I was fifteen years old my mom’s boyfriend raped me. A couple of days later I couldn’t believe he had done that to me.” CD started to cry, “I was so scared. I couldn’t tell my mom that her boyfriend left because of me. She was so happy with him around. I felt so vulnerable; I didn’t know what to do. Later that day while my mom was at work I got a knife out. I sat in my room holding the knife to my wrist. I was crying so hard. I started to cut my wrist. I then through the knife and started screaming and crying. But no one was home. I couldn’t do anything. I didn’t want to die though.”
When CD was done telling Angela her story about her past Angela just stared. CD broke down and started sobbing.
“CD, Oh my gosh. I, uh, well; I don’t know what to say CD. I’m sorry. I didn’t realize it was anything that bad.” Angela was in shock, she never realized her partner and friend had gone through something so horrible.
“I never have gotten over it. I…I…I,” CD started crying again. Angela just looked at her.
“CD, do you want off this case? Because if you do…”
“Angela, I don’t want off this case. I want to, and should, finish it.”
“I just don’t want you working on something that would make you feel uncomfortable.”
“You know what Angela, if I ask to be off this case, Cap will ask why. I don’t plan on telling this to her anytime soon. Okay.”
“Fine CD.” Angela said as she started the car to go back to the station. CD was crying on the way back, but not as bad as before.
CD wiped her eyes and got out of the car, she sighed, and walked inside. She got in there and Kate walked out of her office.
“How’s it going you two?”
“Fine, we didn’t get much from her mom though. And we talked to one of Tara’s friends, Trianna, and she said that she would have either her or her mom call us to get together.” Angela told her.
“Okay,” Looks at CD and could tell that something was wrong. CD was looking at Kate, almost crying. Cap didn’t know what it was about but she was going to get her to talk to her, “And CD, in my office now.”
“Great,” CD said as Kate turned around, she got up and walked to her office, “Okay, what do you want?”
“Shut the door.” CD shut the door, “Okay, now I saw your face out there, you looked like you were about to cry. I don’t know what this has to do with, but I want to know now.”
“Fine, you really want to know? This case brings back memories I don’t want to think about. There you know now.”
“Like what?”
“None of your business.”
“CD, this is my business. We’ve been friends for about twelve years now. I’d like to know what’s going on.”
“Fine, fifteen, I tried to kill myself.” CD said
FLASHBACK
CD was still crying when she heard the door open, she looked at a clock, ‘4:55, mom should be home. This is a good thing. I’m not going to die. I’ve got my whole life ahead of me,’ CD thought to herself. Her mom came running into the room, “CD, hunny, what happened, are you okay?”
CD just kept crying, she couldn’t talk she was crying so hard. Then her mom saw CD’s bleeding wrists.
END FLASHBACK
“Oh, CD, I didn’t know. Do you want someone else to take the case? Put Magda or Jinny on it and you do desk duty?”
“No, I just want to finish what I started. Okay.”
“Fine CD, this is your call. But if you want to talk, or off this case, just tell me.”
“Thanks Captain.” With that CD left her office, Kate sat down and sighed.
