View Full Version : Evacuating, Bye
Family Ties Forever! 09-12-2008, 11:12 AM The hurricane is going to be much worse than first thought. We are evacuating. I am afraid that we may not have a home to come back to. :( :crying: I am VERY scared. I'm not sure when we will be back. Hopefully next week.
If anything happens, I hope it doesn't, I have enjoyed my time here. Thanks to everyone, esp. my friends. Janice, your friendship has meant so much. :)Thanks for all that you've done. Theda Bara 09-12-2008, 03:07 PM Jenny, God Bless you and your family. Being evacuated from your home is very scary. I know for experience, when I was evacuated last year, due to the fire storms that were taking place in my area. You are in my thoughts. Stay strong, sweetie:)

PlayOn 09-13-2008, 01:53 AM wow. what a scary situation. i'll keep them in my thoughts and prayers as well as everybody involved in the hurricanes.
does anybody what hurricane this is?
Janice 09-20-2008, 05:17 PM Has anyone heard from Jenny? Her family was going to her brother's in Corpus Christi. I'm sure they have a computer there. How bad was Houston hit? I wonder if their house is in one piece.

I haven't heard from her. However, this morning I was thinking about her and hoping her and her family are safe. They have also been in my prayers for the last week.
dawsongirl 09-20-2008, 06:13 PM Houston wasn't hit as bad as Galveston, but I guess it depends on where in Houston she lives.
Jude The Obscure 09-20-2008, 07:28 PM My cousin who lives in Houston, had a tree go into her house, destroying her garage, her camper and allowing 2 inches of water all over inside the house.
So yea, that's bad (although not complete destruction like Galveston).
PrettyinPink55 09-22-2008, 01:47 AM Luckily we weren't hit too badly in my area. We have a couple of fences down and some lost roof shingles, but it's nothing compared to what some other people had to go through, especially in Galveston! It'll take the cities a while to heal after the hit we took, but we'll get there. I think Ike's aftermath was the hardest for a lot of people, especially those who had to do without food and water and had to come back to destroyed houses. Some people still don't have power or water in Houston. I luckily got power Tuesday, and we never lost our water, but my university just restored power this morning...we missed an entire week of school...
I hope everyone who rode out the hurricane and evaccuated stayed safe!!!
Riding it out was SCARYYYYY!!!! I can't describe to you how awful the sound of that wind blowing is...I had to keep the radio on full blast to try and drown out the sound!!!
But the most important thing is that we're safe, Jenny, I hope you're safe too!!

PrettyinPink55 09-22-2008, 02:07 AM Good to hear that you're okay!
Thanks!!! :)
Schmoopie 09-22-2008, 03:59 AM Thank you for the update, PIP! BTW, I like your user name! :) Glad you are okay, but sorry you had to go through all of that! It sounds SOOOO scary! My mom told me that my cousins in Houston didn't have power (that was last Monday, so I'm hoping things are better). My aunt lives in Galveston in a nursing home, but she and the other residents were moved to Conroe, Texas before the storm. I hate to hear that Galveston got hit so hard. I love that city. Lots of memories of visiting my Aunt when I was a kid.

TripperFan 09-22-2008, 02:20 PM So glad to hear that Houston was spared the worst of it. I have a couple of friends down there who said they were ok - just the hydro was off for a bit which they had all planned for anyway.
I hear Galvaston is still in bad shape, but I don't think anything could be as bad as what Katrina did.
Hope everything's good for Jenny, Kate and their families.
Funny, my aunt is in Dallas but said they didn't even get rain - yet here in Toronto, we got winds and rain good - the final throws of Ike as it headed northeast. Go figure eh?!

Jude The Obscure 09-23-2008, 11:17 AM No word from Jenny, anyone?
Nighthawk76 09-23-2008, 01:36 PM No word from Jenny, anyone?
Nope :(
ThomasE 09-24-2008, 09:35 PM Wow! I do hope that she is all right. Man, oh man.
Janice 09-24-2008, 10:06 PM It's simply not like Jenny to not post, if she could. Why can't she?
PrettyinPink55 09-25-2008, 12:31 AM If she's back in Houston, many still don't have power. I don't know where in Houston she lives, but there are several neighborhoods who have not had power restored yet...maybe she lives in one of those areas?
Janice 09-27-2008, 05:18 PM ^ You were right PIP, Jenny had no power. Actually, her family was fortunate that they have lights, still no cable/internet access. She was at her brother's home until September 15th, and is glad to be home. She e-mailed me today. She got on AOL dial-up, and told me that she would try to get on SO, but her connection is so slow. She told me that she misses SO and to give everyone her best here.
It sounds like a movie, the way Jenny described it. Her bank is still closed. Many restaurants, businesses and grocery stores are still closed. Many people still don't have lights and water, so she feels fortunate that her family has what it has. She said Galveston was wiped out. I'm happy that Jenny, her family and her home are in one piece and still standing. It was great to hear from her.

MonarC 09-27-2008, 06:23 PM That is good news. I feel really bad for the people in Galveston. It is gonna take a long time to rebuild. Galveston might not be the prettiest beach in the US but it sure was fun going there every summer as a kid. I loved walking along "The Strand" and going into all the shops. "The Peanut Butter Warehouse" is a favorite of mine. I hope they will rebuild to a bigger better city.

I'm really glad to hear that she is doing well. Jenny and her family have been in my prayers every night. I also said a special prayer for them in church this evening.
Family Ties Forever! 09-27-2008, 08:16 PM Thank you Janice for updating everyone. :) Thank you to everyone for your thoughts and prayers. I appreciate it. :) I am very sorry that I haven't been able to get on the computer until today. We were at my brother's until the 15th, however, their computer does not have a large print program (Zoomtext) on it. I even tried to get on, knowing the chance of being able to see anything was nearly zero, but I tried anyway. I couldn't see the text, etc. on the screen. I had to go two weeks without computer access. I realized just how much I'm addicted to the computer, lol.
I am hoping that the provider for my internet and cable will finally fix the problem and that I will then have high speed. For now I have a slow dial-up connection.
The damage in Houston is extensive. Some areas worse than others. Some many trees, power lines and phone polls were knocked down, tossed around, bent, etc. Many businesses, homes, etc. are still without power like Janice memtioned. FEMA has decided to stop providing water, ice. etc. once supplies run out. It's a shame for those who are still without power, water and such. There isn't nearly the amount of help, afterwards, that there was for survivors of Katrina. Please know that I am not trying to start anything by saying that. That was a terrible hurricane too, but LA received a lot more help and assistance, afterwards than Texas. Galvestion, Texas was hit severly. It will take months, and in some cases, years to rebuild. There is another beach where only one house remains. All the other houses are gone. The channels here have been running Hurricane Ike coverage. Until just a few days ago it was non-stop coverage. Seeing the images of destruction over and over is heartbreaking. We are only getting, NBC, PBS, CBS, ABC, UPN, FOX and CW.
That's good that your ok PrettyInPink.

That was very kind of you, Mike. Too much time was passing for Jenny to be gone.
Family Ties Forever! 09-27-2008, 10:02 PM It's a good thing that our phone service isn't with Comcast, because if it was, then the phone would also not be working. Thankfully, we have phone service and because of that have dial-up. I didn't think of the dial-up until today. I kept hoping Comcast would finally fix our service.

Jude The Obscure 09-27-2008, 10:43 PM Welcome back, Jenny!!!
And you're stating a fact--I think there is too much Katrina fatigue, people just don't want to hear the gloom and doom. It happened to us with Rita, which we tell everyone is the forgotten storm. No one is covering Ike's aftermath like they did Katrina. :(
And FEMA makes me sick......
Family Ties Forever! 09-27-2008, 11:00 PM Thanks Jude.
