...and the answer may surprise you.

“Some friend of mine told me he read that,” he said. “First I heard of it.”

Hoffman says no one has ever called him, but it’s possible that someone wants him to play the part and the rumour is being floated to capture his interest. If so, he isn’t saying yes. But he isn’t saying no either.

“I don’t think so,” he says, before he softened the stand a bit.

“I grew up a comic book fan, so I love that stuff. I love going to that stuff. I think what they’re doing with that whole Batman story is really true to what that whole Batman thing has always been. It’s one of the darkest origins of a superhero, to get all nerdy and geeky on you. That character sees his parents gunned down as a young child: I remember when I was a kid reading that story, so seeing it now come to life as the dark tale that it really is as an intense, really dark, very visceral, adult tale that they’re doing now, all the great work people are doing on it, of course I wouldn’t say, ‘Well, no, no no.’

“But I don’t know the reality of it, so I wouldn’t say ‘yes’ to you.”

I read on Dark Horizons that this "reimagined" Penguin wuld be some sort of evil arms dealer character.

DIdn't Hoffman play the same character in Mission Impossible 3?

Yes he did. I don't mind tweaking the Penguin character, because I trust Nolan's vision. (If in fact he comes back) I also heard a rumor that Bob Hoskins wanted a chance at playing Oswald Cobblepot aka The Penguin.

Nolan dismissed the idea of using the Penguin years ago, so I don't believe any of these rumors about what villain is going to be in the next movie.

Hoffman would make a great villain though.

As would Johnny Depp, one thing is for sure, Nolan has a keen eye for talent.

As long as he doesn't look like the Penguin of Batman Returns.

Yeah, there's no way they can get away with that now.

Why? IMO he was pretty dark and scary.

Christopher Nolan's Batman universe is trying to be a bit more "reality" based than the earlier Batman franchise, so I don't think a half man half bird wearing a top hat will fit in there.

That's not to say I didnt enjoy Danny DeVito's Penguin.
