At the time passing Roger Maris' previous single season record of 61 homers. "The Chase" that year brought baseball back to a time where it was crowned "America's Past Time", to a full effect no one would forget. McGwire hit the infamous home-run at Bush Stadium, the Cardinals Home vs. the rival Cubs, who ironically included Sammy Sosa on their team, the player who was chasing McGwire for the title that year. McGwire went on to hit 70 that year, followed by 68 homers for Sosa. The single season record for homers would later be shattered by the bat of another steroid addict, slugger Barry Bonds, who broke the record with 73 homers in 2001. McGwire hit his 62nd and at the time, record home run off of Cubs Starter Steve Trachsel.

Interestingly I was at Busch Stadium the previous Saturday (September 5) for a Cardinals game against the Cincinnati Reds. On the tall hotel next to the stadium was a counter hanging from the roof. IIRC "Big Mac" hit #60 that game (a win over the Reds). At my parents house I still have a Mark McGwire rookie card (1985 Topps #401, when he was on the US Olympic team; I bought it in 1991).

Ever since his ties to steroids have surfaced I haven't thought too much about it until I saw a sign August 16 on I-70 in St. Louis saying "Mark McGwire Highway". It was right after I came in from Illinois.

That's cool! I like McGwire and Sosa, just not Bonds lol. They were all steroid users, found guilty or not, along with Palmeiro, Juan Gonzalez and a bunch of others. He was a class act, except he looked stupid saying in the steroid testimony "I am not hear to talk about the past." Well jeez Mark, you've been retired, what are we going to talk about now? He wasn't in the league anymore so they HAD to talk about the past lol :lol:. He jus didn't want to get caught. Anyways, did you pay a lot for that Topps card? I just got a Babe Ruth Topps card for free- a dent in it about the size of a pin, not even that big!

I can't remember, but it wasn't very expensive. Little did we know in 1991 that he would challenge Roger Maris' record of 61 home runs.
