Thandie Newton turned down a role in Charlie's Angels - because she was worried it would make her too famous.

The Crash star was about to start filming alongside Cameron Diaz and Drew Barrymore on the 2000 action film - but pulled out when she realized it would catapult her to a higher level of fame. She was replaced by Ally McBeal star Lucy Liu.

Newton says, "In career terms it was a platinum opportunity. Or, as my agent put it, 'a one-two punch'. I was going to do it for about 24 hours. But then I woke up and it just didn't feel right. It would have meant entering that virtual world of stardom, but I'd been away from home for nine months (filming Mission: Impossible II) and it would have meant another six months away."

And although Newton was pleased with the decision, her agent and manager weren't - and she soon parted company with them. She adds, "They were appalled. They thought I was committing career suicide."

According to The Charlie's Angels Casebook (by Jack Condon and David Hofstede), Thandie Newton was just one of many starlets who passed on the role. Others who turned it down were Angelina Jolie, Halle Berry, Lauryn Hill, Jenny McCarthy, Gwyneth Paltrow, Jada Pinkett Smith, Liv Tyler, Ashley Judd, and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Wow!!

Heck, that's enough for a whole new TV series! Not that any of those women would do a TV show, but...
