the queen of controversy strikes again! hehe.

hey, if you haven't read "Complicated" you might want to read it, but this fic can stand alone as well, so, enjoy:

Captain Kate McCafferty picked up the folder she had been handed this morning. She was well aware of the publicity surrounding the release of Robert Fisher, and now it was her job to head up a team to try to keep him behind bars. Over the past few weeks there were protests by several gay rights groups about Roberts release, as well as groups saying Robert had gotten a bad wrap.

Sixteen years ago, Robert, or Bobby as he was usually called, murdered a fellow sixteen year old girl in cold blood. He had murdered her because she was "different" he had said then. Everyone knew it was because Beth, the girl who he murdered, was gay.

Sighing, she opened up the case file and started reading. Fifteen minutes later, she stopped as she read the name Jinny Exstead on the paper in front of her. Jinny was listed as the "best friend" and "girlfriend" of the deceased... at different times. During the court proceedings, however, Jinny was mearly referred to as Beth's best friend. Looking at her watch, Kate realized it was already 8:30, and she opened her door. "Exstead! I need to see you in my office!" she yelled, and walked back to her desk.

Jinny heard her name being called by the captain and she groaned. 'What does she want now?' she thought as she slipped from her chair and headed towards Kate's office. Stepping inside, she shut the door behind her. "Yes?" she asked, as politely as she knew how.

"Sit" Kate said and she handed the case file to Jinny. "Look familiar?" Kate watched Jinny's expression as the cop took the folder. Tears were running down her face and she quickly wiped them away.

"Yeah." Jinny said, trying to contain her emotions. Why was the captain doing this to her? Opening the folder she read what was written, and stopped at the same point the captain had stopped. 'She knows' she thought. "So you know, huh cap? Isn't it NICE to know just a LITTLE bit more about my personal life?!" Jinny started to raise her voice. It was her defense mechanism, and she couldn't help it.

Kate watched as Jinny went from one emotion to the other, swinging like a pendulum. "I don't care, Jinny" she said quietly. Kate never admitted this, but she worried about the inspector that stood across from her. Sure, she openly admitted not liking the alcohol, but there was something more to Jinny that Kate worried about... just... something more.

Jinny stopped and looked at the captain, taking in what she had just said. She realized she had been worried about what Kate thought of her. 'That's stupid' she thought to herself. 'No, it's not. You really do care what she thinks. That's why you get so mad at her when she yells at you.' Jinny told herself to shut up. She didn't need this right now. "Then why did you bring me in here?" she asked, quizzically.

"Because I need you to help me keep him behind bars" Kate said matter-of-factly, and watched as Jinny got a grateful look in her eyes. 'I don't see that often' Kate mused, and smiled to herself. Just then, Kate's phone rang and she picked it up. "McCafferty." Kate listened and her face got pale. "Is everything alright?... Yes. Yes... I'll find somewhere else to stay." Kate hung up the phone and then back up at Jinny.

"What's wrong?" Jinny asked tentitavly (sp?). She didn't want to get into caps business after always telling her not to get into hers. She studied the captains face and could tell something was wrong, though.

Kate sighed. "Someone left a death threat at my place after trashing it. I need somewhere else to stay until after the parole hearing." Kate sat down at her desk and leaned back in her chair.

Jinny knew she was going to regret this the moment she uttered the words, but she had to... it was the least she could do. 'What am I saying?!' thought Jinny, but it was too late. "Um.. you could stay with me if ya want.. I mean, you don't HAVE to, but..."

Kate looked at Jinny with raised eyebrows. Was she actually offering her apartment? She couldn't believe the words that were coming out of Jinny's mouth, but she appriciated them nonetheless. "Actually.." she said "I think staying there might be a good thing. We could go over the case and try to come up with some way to keep Bobby in jail."

"Um...ok." Jinny stared down at the floor, then back up at her captain. 'I can't believe I just did that' she thought. "Well, I'd.. uh.. better get back to work." Jinny quickly turned around and left Kate's office. She was convinced that an attack of sudden insanity had overcome her in the office just now, and she needed to think.

Kate watched Jinny walk out of her office, and she shook her head. It was just like Exstead to not know what she was doing until after she did it. 'That's what I like about her' she thought 'AND what I DON'T like about her' she added, and chuckled to herself.

***JINNY'S APARTMENT***
Jinny was running around her apartment picking up dishes, empty bottles, food containers, and anything else that made the place look messy. After about an hour and a half, she had made decent progress, and it was starting to look like someone actually lived there. A knock on the door startled her, and when she regained her composure, she opened the door to find Kate McCafferty standing there. "Hey cap" she said, and stepped aside, letting her in.

Kate walked into Jinny's apartment and looked around. It wasn't as bad as she had expected it to be, and she was pleasantly pleased. "So, Jinny... thanks again for letting me stay here. I know I'm not your favorite person..."

Jinny laughed. "Um.. yeah" she said and smiled. Captain definitely was not her idea of a good time... but she wasn't THAT bad. "Um... bathroom's in there.." she pointed "bedrooms in there.." she pointed again. "Kitchen.." again pointed. "You get the bed, curtosy of me, and I will sleep on the couch."

"Thanks Jinny. I'm... gonna go change. Then we can talk about this case." Kate walked into the bathroom and shut the door. What she saw made her almost burst out laughing. If the rest of Jinny's house was a little messy, her bathroom was a disaster area. Clothes and towels lined the floor, her shower was filled with about ten different shampoo bottles, her vanity drawer was so stuffed with things it wouldn't close, and she used the sink as a medicine cabinet. 'Only Jinny' Kate thought, as she shook her head.

Jinny felt as if she were forgetting something, and then it hit her. She hadn't cleaned her bathroom. 'STUPID!' she said to herself. 'Wait a minute, why do I care?' she laughed. Going into her bedroom, she decided to change. Searching her in her drawer by her bed, Jinny pulled out a pair of black sweats and a tshirt. She took off her top and was reaching down to grab the tshirt when the captain walked into the room. "Ahhh!" she screamed, and held the tshirt over her.

When Kate walked out of the bathroom and into Jinny's bedroom, she caught her inspector with her shirt off.. literally. Jinny's scream and quick reflexes, however, prevented the situation from getting more embarrasing than it already was. "Sorry.. I'll.. be out in the living room." Kate walked out of Jinny's bedroom smiling to herself. 'Wait a minute, McCafferty' she thought 'Don't you dare start this stuff again.'

Jinny watched her captain walk out of her bedroom and finally took a breathe, not realizing she had been holding it. 'For crying out loud' Jinny thought to herself as she quickly finished dressing. Walking out into the living room, she saw Kate pulling out her breifcase and taking out the case file. 'Well, this is it' Jinny thought, and sat down next to Kate on the couch.

About an hour later, Jinny was crying. Reliving Bobby's trial for Beth's murder was draining. And she still hadn't told the Captain exactly how her and Beth had gotten together. She'd been pressing for the last 15 minutes... said it was instrumental to keeping Bobby behind bars, but all Jinny could do was cry. Finally, she just let it all spill out.

"One day... in the morning... Beth always came over in the morning... she drove to school. Anyway, one morning she came over early and said she'd been having some issues with her parents. After a few minutes of pressing, she... came out to me. I was scared..." Jinny paused, taking a breathe and looked at Kate, wondering if she should go on. Kate nodded, so she did. "I was scared because I had liked her for almost a year now. But I was acting distant and didn't want to deal. I made out with Bobby.. that morning. Then later I told her in a note how I felt. Someone found the note though... and then in the bathroom I yelled at her.. and... she left school... and I followed her to her house. Her dad kicked her out! He kicked her out!!"

Jinny remembered that day so vividly. Robert had wanted Jinny to leave, but she wouldn't, so she had witnessed the whole scene. Tears welled up in her eyes again, but she wiped them away with the back of her hand and continued. "So we went back to my house. We... kissed." Jinny smiled at the memory, then frowned, knowing less than 24 hours later Beth was dead. "And she spent the night on the couch. My dad woke us up... made us breakfast, and went to change. She... Beth, wanted to give me a good morning kiss, and she did, and..." Tears were running down Jinny's cheeks once again. "And my dad walked in. Beth ran out... I... I never saw her again..."

Kate felt so sorry for Jinny. She wanted to comfort her, but she was never good at doing that, so she just let Jinny cry.

***THE DIVISION-AFTER PAROLE HEARING***
Jinny stormed into the division with tears in her eyes. Mentally competant?! OK to merge into society?!?! Jinny couldn't believe what had just taken place. Not only did Bobby Fisher get parole, but he was commended! COMMENDED! Sitting down at her desk, she placed her head in her hands.

Magda looked up as her partner came into the division. She could tell something was seriously wrong... actually, she could tell for days now, but she was unable to get anything out of Jinny. Cautiously, she decided to try again. "Jinny... what's..."

Jinny glared up at Magda. "You know... why don't you just mind your own business for a change?!" Noting successfully Magda's hurt expression, Jinny turned her attention back down to her desk.

"That was uncalled for, Exstead" Captain McCafferty said as she walked into the division. "In my office... NOW!" Picking up the pace, Kate headed for her office, followed by Jinny. When she got there, she heard the door slam behind her and whirled around. "Do NOT slam my door. Now, what the hell was that out there?!"

Jinny's face was a mask of hatred. How DARE she ask her what was wrong... she knew damned well what was wrong. "Captain... Magda doesn't know about this, okay?! She's been bugging me all week, and..." tears came to her eyes now, she couldn't hold it in. "That bastard got out! HE GOT OUT!!!" She slammed her fist into the wall and cried harder, her body shaking.

Kate looked at her inspector as she broke down crying. Getting up from her desk, she tentatively hugged Jinny. "Alright... alright. Go home. It's 4 already... and I'm out of your hair too. Sleep. Please." She didn't know how to comfort... it was the best she could do.

Jinny felt Kate's arms around her, and froze up. She didn't want her comfort.. or did she? She didn't even know anymore. Kate's words, however, did get to her and she just nodded. Shaking off the captain, she turned to the door, mumbling goodbye as she left.

***ANCHORSIDE-THAT NIGHT***
Kate sat at a booth in Anchorside, sipping on her drink. It had been a long and tedious day. She was stil upset that Bobby Fisher was released on parole today... and she was concerned about Jinny. That's when she spotted her inspector across the room. Actually... she heard her.

"What do you MEAN you won't give me another drink?!" Jinny yelled at the bartender. Her mind was fogged over, and all she wanted to do was forget. When she had gotten home that day, she had found a note threatening her life, and had spent the whole night worrying about it... until she came here, that is. "COME ON!" she yelled, and was about to yell again when she felt a hand on her arm and turned around. There was captain McCafferty, in all her glory. 'Oh God' Jinny thought and tried to smile.

Kate looked at Jinny with both sympathy and anger in her eyes. She knew Jinny was hurting, but she was also upset that she had drank this much. "C'mon, Jinny, I'm taking you home." Grabbing her inspector, she walked her to the door despite the protests.

"Hey hey hey!!" Jinny kept saying over and over again. Kate had no right to take her away from the bar. None. Trying to wrench her arm free, she found that she couldn't. "HEY!!! I can't go home, someone's gonna kill me.." she slurred and stumbled, almost knocking Kate over.

Regaining her footing, Kate turned toward Jinny and stared at her. "Did you just say what I think you said?"

Jinny nodded and fished around in her pocket for the note she stuffed in there earlier. When she found it, she handed it to Kate, who finally let go of her arm. Rubbing where her arm was held just a minute ago, Jinny had to concentrate not to fall over.

Kate took the note from Jinny and read it, the color quickly draining from her face.

Kate looked back up at Jinny who looked as if she was going to pass out and made up her mind. "You're coming home with me tonight" she said and dragged Jinny out the door.

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Unlocking the door, Kate McCafferty brought Jinny inside her house. Walking her to the bedroom, she sat her down on the bed and looked for something for her inspector to wear. Finding some loose pants and an oversized tshirt, she handed them to Jinny. "Here.. change into this. You get the bed... just don't throw up, or you're dead." Kate walked out of the bedroom and into her living room. Sitting on the couch, she felt her eyelids get heavy, and before she knew it she was alseep in all her clothes.

At two am, Kate woke up, her back stiff and her head pounding. 'God, I wish I had my bed' she thought, as she got up. 'Speaking of my bed, I'd better go check on Jinny.' Walking into her bedroom, she laughed at the site before her. Jinny hadn't even finished getting changed. She had gotten into the oversized shirt, but had passed out on the bed, on top of the covers. Going to her bedroom closet, Kate got out a blanket and covered Jinny over with it. 'At least she's off tomorrow' she thought, and went back into the living room.

Laying on the couch, Kate's thoughts wandered. She thought about work, Bobby Fisher, Jinny. As the thoughts raced through her head, she drifted off to sleep again.

***KATE'S HOUSE-NEXT MORNING 11:27 AM***
Jinny awoke to unfamilar surroundings and a pounding headache. Looking around, she vaguely remembered the captain dragging her home and her falling asleep. Getting up, she walked through the house and found the kitchen... and a note, addressed to her.

Jinny,
Food is in the fridge, if you're hungry. Asprin is in the bathroom. There are some old clothes of mine in the top drawer of my dresser next to my bed for after your shower. DON'T LEAVE. Call me if you need anything.
Kate

Jinny stared at the note. Don't leave? Why the hell not?! Then she remembered the note she had found at her apartment and a shiver ran down her spine. Going to the refrigerator she looked in. "Wow... captain Kate actually has some good food." Taking out some lunch meat and mayo, she began hunting for the bread when she heard the front door open.

Amanda opened the door to her mom's house. She didn't know if her mom was working today, but there was only one way to find out... and that was to go looking for her. "Mom??" she called out, but was greeted with silence. Looking up, however, she saw Jinny standing there in a tshirt, looking as if she just woke up. "Uh.. Jinny..." Amanda said, confused as to why she was there.

"Hey Amanda. You're mom's not here. She's working." Jinny started to walk back into the kitchen, and then realized she was just in the oversized tshirt still. 'Dear god, the girl must be confused' she said to herself and chuckled.

Watching Jinny walk away, Amanda wondered again why she was there and why she was in a tshirt. Shaking her head and deciding to ask her mother rather than Jinny, she called out "Hey Jinny... I'm going to see my mom. Uh... see you later!" She heard a muffled goodbye from the kitchen and walked out the front door, still confused.

***THE DIVISION-KATE'S OFFICE***
Kate heard a knock on her office door and looked up to find Amanda standing there with an interesting look on her face. "Hey sweetie... what's going on?" Kate got up and hugged her daughter quickly.

"Uh.. are you turning gay or something, mom?" Amanda asked, point blank, and looked at her mother for a reaction.

"What?" Kate asked, not understanding where this was coming from. She looked at her daughter quizzically. She walked back to behind her desk again, thinking. "And the answer is no... but why are you asking?"

Amanda let her breathe out. "Ok.. see, I went to your house looking for you and instead I found Jinny in a tshirt and..."

Kate laughed and shook her head. "Jinny's at my house because she got a threat and was too drunk last night to walk alone. Don't worry, sweetie." Kate looked at her daughter, who looked relieved beyond words. Outside, she smiled, inside, Kate had a knawing knot in the pit of her stomach. "So... what were you looking for me for?" she asked, and Amanda started to talk.

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Jinny stepped out of the shower and dried herself off. Picking up the clothes she had gotten from Kate's drawer, she slipped them on and walked out of the bathroom. Sitting down on the bed, she flipped on the bedroom tv and slipped her hand under one of Kate's pillows. She felt something hard, like a book, and she pulled it out. Examining it, she let out a breathe. "Kate's diary... this should be interesting..."

Jinny opened up the book and started reading. It was pretty slow going until she got to a part about her, and she nearly dropped the book.

... and we finally caught the guy that was harrasing Jinny. Well, actually, Jinny caught him. Funny how I'll never admit to her that she's a good cop... that would just be admitting too much. Just like I would never tell her how adorable her hair looked today when she was wearing that blue sweater... all pulled up and.. well, cute. I'm glad her and Magda partnered up... she needed a partner, and I know Magda can handle her. It was strange how much I liked her hair today. Usually when her hair falls in her face it's just...wow. But today, well, I don't know.. there was something about it. Enough about Jinny... I'm just torturing myself....

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Jinny stared at the book in her hands, disbelieving what she was reading. Quickly closing it, she shoved it back under the pillow and turned her attention to the tv.

Two hours later, Jinny was standing in Kate's bathroom putting the finishing touches on her hair. It looked almost exactly the way it had the day Magda decided to be her partner. "Now.." she said outloud "If only I had better clothes..." Walking out of the bathroom, Jinny looked into the drawer by Kate's bed and found some black shorts and a blue tshirt. "Blue is good" she said, smiling. Stripping out of the clothes she had on and putting on the new ones, she looked at herself in the mirror. "Not bad, Exstead, not bad" she said to herself. "Wait... what am I doing?!" She couldn't answer herself and decided not to. Instead, she headed for the kitchen to find something to cook for dinner.

Kate walked into her house and was greeted by the aroma of food. 'Jinny's cooking?' she thought 'How.... unpredictable.' She smiled. It was just one more thing she liked about her inspector. When she walked into the kitchen, her breathe caught in her throat. Jinny was standing there, next to the stove, humming. Her hair was pulled up. 'Just like that one day' Kate thought, and smiled. She was wearing black shorts and a blue tshirt... and she looked great. "Jinny... this is a surprise."

Jinny turned around, startled, and smiled at the captain. "Yeah.. well... I thought since I was such a.. um.. yeah, last night I'd make up for it." Jinny looked back down at the stove and smiled. This was going good... at least she thought it was.

Kate just stared at Jinny. "Umm... yeah.. sounds good. I'm... gonna go change." Kate walked into her bedroom and sat on her bed. Reaching under her right pillow, she felt for her diary... it wasn't there! Frantic, she searched under the other pillow and found it. 'I never put it under my left pillow' she thought, and then it dawned on her. Jinny had read her diary. 'But she didn't seem bothered by it' she thought 'In fact... her hair is like...' Kate opened up her diary and found the page where she was talking about Jinny's hair. Her eyes widening, she drew in a breathe. Could it be that Jinny actually... no.. it couldn't be.

When Kate walked back out into her kitchen, the table was set and there was food on it. Jinny was already seated and was waiting. Smiling, Kate sat down. "Wow, Jinny.. this looks.. good." Jinny just smiled back at her and Kate's heart skipped a beat. "Umm.. Jinny... did you... by chance... read my diary today?"

Jinny froze. How did Kate know she read her diary? Was the hair too much? "Uh.. well... I sorta... Yes." She knew she had to admit it. And she also knew by admitting it, she was giving herself away... why else would she do her hair like this and cook dinner? Looking down at her food, she started to pick at it, waiting for Kate to respond.

"Well... um..." was all that Kate said. What had she expected to say if Jinny admitted it. Thanks for reading and doing your hair like that? No, that was stupid. "So... I take it you read the part about... your hair."

Jinny almost dropped her fork. She couldn't believe the captian was being so blunt about it... but then again she could. Looking back up across the table,she nodded at Kate. "Yeah. I did. You like?" She didn't know what else to say... didn't know what to do. Didn't know what was happening... nothing. She was just going with the flow... something that she hadn't done in awhile.

"Yes. Yes, I do." Kate looked down at her meal and began to eat. It was delicious... she didn't know Jinny could cook like that. They ate the rest of their meal in silence, neither of them knowing what to say. The only thing that broke the lack of communication were the occasional glances at each other... nothing more. When dinner was over, Kate watched as Jinny started to clean up the dishes. Getting up, she placed her hand on Jinny's arm. "You don't have to do that right now" she said, as she walked out of the kitchen and into the living room.

lol... now because i have to be good *looks at tj and all the innocent people on the board* THIS is what happens:

Kate kept walking from her living room into her bedroom and got out her bottle of wine and two glasses from the safe place she kept it. She felt this need to get a little tipsy, and this stuff definitely did it to her. Walking back into the living room, she saw Jinny sitting on the couch and sat down next to her. Taking out the wine and the glasses, she poured some, and handed a glass to Jinny. "Here. You cooked dinner... now some after dinner wine."

Jinny stared at the glass in her hand. She knew not even the whole bottle would get her drunk, but it might take some of the edge off. Taking a sip, her eyes widened. "Oh my God.. this is good!" she exclaimed, and took another sip.

Smiling, Kate brought her own glass to her lips and drank. She had to admit, it was good... only the best in her house. "I'm glad you like it" she said, and sipped some more.

An hour later, Kate was a little more than tipsy. Jinny was just starting to feel fuzzy. The site of the two of them laughing on the couch was interesting. Kate was telling Jinny a story about Amanda and some dishwasher boy, and she couldn't stop laughing at the absurdity of the situation. It felt good to let loose, and Kate was certainly doing that.

Jinny watched her captain as she animatedly told the story. She had never seen her like this, and it was definitely a site to behold. It was like a whole new Kate was sitting in front of her. 'Now' Jinny said to herself, and she leaned in, kissing the captain on the lips.

Kate immediately stopped telling the story when she felt Jinny's lips on hers. She couldn't believe this was happening. She liked it, but she couldn't believe it. Smiling, she got up and stumbled. "That was an... interesting turn of events, Exstead" she said and held out her hand. When Jinny took it, she dragged her across the room. "Now..."

***MORNING***
Jinny opened her eyes and blinked a few times as the sunlight hit them. Glancing around, she remembered where she was and got a panicky look on her face. Kate was nowhere to be seen, and Jinny's mind wad racing. This was reminiscent of the times when Jinny would wake up in a random guys bed and leave. Only this time it was the captain and she couldn't leave because someone was threatening her life. Closing her eyes again, she thought back to last night. She wasn't drunk. The captain was drunk... but she wasn't. Just then, Kate walked in, dressed for work.

When she walked into her bedroom she noticed Jinny was up. "Hey. Get dressed. You'll be late for work." Kate was trying to act like nothing had happened.... unfortunately it did. Not that it wasn't nice, but it wasn't supposed to happen and it wouldn't happen again.

"Uh... I'll wait till you leave the room." Jinny hid herself under the covers and prayed silently that this was a dream, but she knew it wasn't. 'But it's not all that bad' she thought, then reprimanded herself.

Kate glanced over at Jinny and shook her head. "It's not like..." she trailed off. 'Forget it' she said to herself and walked out of the room.

Jinny slowly got out of bed and went into the bathroom. There were clothes set out for her... professional-type clothes. She stepped into the shower and let the water run over her. She still didn't want to think about what had happened the night before. When she finished and stepped out of the shower she heard the front door slam. 'She's gone to work' thought Jinny 'nice protection.' Drying herself off, she slipped into the clothes.

***THE DIVISION***
Jinny walked in to the division, not really wanting to be there. When she sat at her desk, she swore she could feel everyone's eyes on her, but when she looked up, no one was paying attention to her. 'God, I'm going to go insane' she thought.

Magda entered the division and saw Jinny there. She had been calling her place all night with no luck. She wanted to apologize for being a busy-body, but she had to find Jinny first. "Hey Jin... where were you last night? I was callin all night.." Magda watched as Jinny just looked at her, like a deer caught in headlights.

Jinny looked at Magda. 'This can't be happening' she thought as she tried to come up with an excuse for where she had been last night. "Uh.. well... you know.. just..." she couldn't say anymore. Looking down, she silently prayed that Magda would just leave her alone and accept the fact that she wasn't going to tell her where she was.

Magda laughed. "Good answer, Jin. Relax... it's not the first time you spent the night at some guys house.." Magda watches Jinny,expecting a backlash, but all she got was a nod. 'Interesting' she thought. "Anyway, I was calling to apologize for..." she was interupted when the captain came over to her and Jinny.

Kate looked at her two inspectors. She knew this was going to be hard for Jinny... and hard for her... but she had to act as if nothing happened. "Exstead. Ramirez. We have a homicide. Victim was found in the alley behind the old warehouse. Wallet and all her money still on her." Kate turned around, but decided against it. Turning back, she looked at Jinny, who wouldn't look at her. "Exstead... you ok?"

Hearing captain's voice saying her name brought Jinny back to reality. She nodded vaguely, still not looking up. When she felt a hand on her shoulder, she jerked up and looked into Kate's eyes. Staring at them for a minute brought back the night before, and she both smiled and screamed inside. It didn't make any sense. "I'm fine, cap" she managed to say and looked back down.

Watching the scene unfold before her, Magda's curiousity was peaked, but she still didn't say anything. Jinny was acting strange lately, so she chalked it up to that. "I'm gonna go to the bathroom before we leave, Jin" she said and started to leave.

"Wait for me." Jinny followed Magda down the stairs into the bathroom. "So.. um.. what were you saying before Ka... I mean, captain came over to us?"

"I was apologizing for being so nosy... you know.. when you came in all upset and stuff. I don't know. I just didn't want to be off on the wrong foot." Magda smiled and entered the locker room. Since there was only one stall in the place, she went in, leaving Jinny to sit on the bench to wait.

Jinny sat down and put her head in her hands. Last night, she knew, was a mistake of the worst kind. But still, there was a part of her that liked it. 'No, Exstead, don't start this crap' she thought to herself as she heard the toilet flush. Getting up, she waited for Magda to come out. Just as she did, Kate McCafferty stepped into the locker room. "Uh.." Jinny subconciously said, and looked down.

When she got into the locker room, Kate saw Jinny standing there and almost ran into Magda. Exusing herself, she walked towards the sink, feeling Jinny's eyes on her. When she got to the mirror, she looked in and again they locked eyes, but broke away quickly.

Jinny rushed towards the stall. She had to get away from the situation. She didn't know how this was ever going to work... or even if it would. Trying to ignore Magda's and Kate's voices, she closed her eyes.

"So cap, how was your night last night?" Magda asked, no clue as to what had happened. Again, she got a deer in headlights look... only this time it wasn't from Jinny. "Um.. nevermind?" she suggests, and sits down on the bench to wait for Jinny.

Kate snapped out of it. If she kept this up, not only would Magda know but everyone would and her ass would be fired. "No, just... kinda... long" she decided to go with. Nothing better than vagueness.

'LONG?!?!' Jinny thought to herself. 'LONG?!?!' Then she realized she was being stupid. Why did she even CARE what the captain said about last night... as long as she didn't tell anyone the truth. Flushing the toilet, she walked out of the stall and over to the sink, almost running into Kate. "Oh.. sorry.." Their eyes met breifly, then Jinny snapped hers away, continuing to the sink.

Again, Magda watched the scene before her. It was all very interesting, but she couldn't place her finger on what was bothering her about it. Shrugging, she waited for Jinny to finish drying her hands. "Let's go" she said, and walked out of the locker room.

***LATER-THE DIVISION***
Magda and Jinny walked into the division. They had just been to the scene of a brutal murder, and neither of them liked it. A 20 year old college girl had been stabbed to death in an alleyway. 'What a horrible way to die' Jinny thought, and sat down in her chair. 'Just like Beth.' Moments later, the captain's voice penetrated her thoughts.

"Exstead. In my office." Kate waited for Jinny to get up from her desk and walk over to the door. When she got there, Kate looked into her eyes once again, then motioned her in, shutting the door behind her. "What's the latest on the case?"

Jinny stared at the captain in desbelief. How could she just sit there and ask that question... as if nothing happened? "Well, fine, as murder cases go. We've got a few suspects. Nothing concrete. Mag's making some phone calls..." she trailed off, watching Kate for any sign of.. well.. anything.

"Good" Kate said, and looked down. "Jinny, we need to keep our working relationship the same as it always has been. I've already noticed things are weird and..." she went over to where Jinny was standing and grabbed her hand, forgetting there was a window there. "Please.. let's just.. move on, ok?"

Jinny laughed. 'Nice of her to think that moving on is so easy' she thought to herself as she looked down at the hand captain was still holding slightly. Carefully, she removed her hand. "Yeah... moving on is good" and she laughed again, nervously. "Well.. uh.. better see how Mag is doing." Turning away, she walked towards the door "And.. uh.. thanks for letting me stay.." she said quickly, and opened the door.

Magda saw the whole thing from where she was seated. She saw Jinny go in... her and Cap talking... Cap grabbing Jinny's hand... Jinny pulling away... them laughing. She didn't know what to make of it, but she was tired of not knowing. When Jinny walked up to her, she casually asked "What was that about?" trying not to seem overly interested.

Jinny looked at Magda. "Um.. I was just... thanking her for letting me stay at her house... no biggie." Jinny's face flushed slightly and she looked down. 'Damn it, I shouldn't have said that' she thought, and was preparing for a berage of questions. When they didn't come, she was surprised.

Wondering why Jinny was spending the night at captains house silenced Magda. It was obvious Jinny wasn't going to tell her, and she wasn't going to ask captain on work time. Sitting back down at her desk, she tried to concentrate on something else, but she couldn't. She needed to know what was going on.

***KATE'S HOUSE-THAT NIGHT***
Kate sat in her living room watching the television. There really wasn't anything on, but she had nothing better to do. When her doorbell rang, she was startled. 'Now, who could that be' she thought as she walked towards the door. Upon opening it, she saw Jinny there, dishevled, her eyes red. "Jinny... what?"

"Look." Jinny shoved a piece of paper in the captains face. She had been crying since she had recieved it, and finally had gotten to courage to come over here and let Kate know what was going on... again.

Kate looked at the piece of paper in her hand. It was another note... another threat... to Jinny.

You haven't been home... and I've been waiting... I wonder if this will be as fun as it was 16 years ago.

Kate looked back up at Jinny, who had obviously been crying. Moving aside, she motioned for Jinny to come in and shut the door behind her. "Jinny.. this is serious. We can have Bobby arrested for this." Kate looked in Jinny's eyes. They were scared. 'But what are they scared of? Bobby or me?'

"If you can find him" Jinny replied and looked around. She couldn't believe she was back here. Not after what had happened the night before. But she knew she couldn't go to Magda... Magda didn't even know about Beth or anything. Kate was the only one who knew. Besides, they needed to talk anyway. "Um... we need to talk."

Kate nodded and walked into the living room, sitting on the couch. She watched as Jinny tentitively sat down next to her. "Look, Jinny, I'm sorry about last night. I just... well, I don't know what happened...."

"I know. I... I don't know what to do. When I woke up this morning, all I wanted to do was leave... forget about it..." Jinny looked at Kate and noticed a hurt in her eyes. Sighing, she went on. "But now... now I can't. I can't forget it. I even..." she paused, not knowing if she should say this or not. "Liked it" she finished, looking down.

Kate stared at her inspector, and slowly nodded her head. "Yes.. well... yes." She was speechless. She knew how she felt on the issue, but now knowing how Jinny felt was a whole other story. "But.. it was wrong. It shouldn't have happened.... and..."

Jinny cut Kate off, she didn't want this to go this way. "I know" she said "but..." She didn't know what to say. She kinda knew what she was thinking, but it couldn't be put into words, so she just sat there, waiting... watching... thinking... until the same thing that had happened last night happened again... there was a kiss.

An hour later, Jinny found herself in the same situation as the night before... well, almost. She still couldn't believe she was doing this again, but she knew she wanted to.

The doorbell rang and both of them froze. It was more likely for Kate to go to the door, but more convienient for Jinny to go. Grabbing Kate's robe, Jinny threw it on and went to the door, opening it slowly. There stood Magda, eyebrows raised. "Uhh.. Mag.. umm..." Jinny sputtered, not knowing what to do. "What.. why in the hell are you here?" she finally managed to get out.

From the bedroom, Kate called out. "Who is it, hunny?" Jinny froze and looked at Magda, whose eyes were wide.

"Hunny?" Magda asked, shocked. "What's going on here, Jin?" She looked past Jinny and into the captain's house. Looking back at her partner, she asks again. "Well.. what's going on?" Jinny didn't answer her.

Kate stared up at the ceiling. Jinny wasn't answering her, so she decided to go out and see who it was herself. "Hey, who is it, baby?" she asked as she entered the living room. Then she saw Magda at the front door. Realizing how this must look... well, how it did look... Kate's eyes got wide and she rushed back into the bedroom. When she got there she rushed around to throw some clothes on.

Magda stared at the fleeting figure of her captain in shock, then she turned once again to Jinny. "Alright... tell me what is going on here, NOW!" she shouted. Jinny didn't react... she just rubbed her forehead with her hand. Magda noticed tears coming into Jinny's eyes and lowered her voice a little. "I know what I just saw, Jinny. I know what it looks like... so IS it what it looks like?"

Jinny just stared at Magda and didn't say a word. She couldn't... it was like her voice was gone. She just looked at Magda who was looking at her. In a few moments, she felt a hand on her shoulder and she turned around. Kate was standing there, dressed more now.

"I can answer your question, Magda. Come in" Kate said and the three of them walked to the living room.

Kate sat down on the sofa with Jinny next to her. Magda chose to sit on the chair opposite them. Her mind was racing. She was expecting to come over here and find them secretly getting along.. playing.. cards or something... not this. Wringing her hands, she looked from Jinny to the captain and back again, waiting.

Sighing, Kate looked at Jinny, then at Magda. "Well.. what it looks like we were doing.." she paused "we were." She gauged Magda's reaction, and thinking it was so far so good, she went on. "Last night... well, let's just say this isn't the first time."

Magda's jaw dropped. Thinking something was going on and then finding out that it was were two completely different things. She looked at Jinny, whose eyes were filled with tears by this point. "Wait a minute.. so you're saying... CAPTAIN... that you and Jinny... one of your INSPECTORS are... are..." she couldn't finish. Jinny was her best friend, and Magda would've been able to deal with this better had Jinny seemed okay with it... but something was obviously wrong.

"Magda, I know what you're thinking... but..." Kate stopped, knowing that whatever she said wouldn't do any good. Instead, she looked down and rubbed Jinny's back. "I know this is a shock."

Magda's eyes widened and she got up from her seat. She needed to go home and think... maybe after she did that she could talk with Jinny and she would feel better about this. Right now, however, she knew she had to leave. "I'm going home. I... I just need to think." Magda walked towards the front door and let herself out.

Kate stared after Magda and then brought her attention back to Jinny. "Hey... come on... lets go to sleep.."

Jinny wrenched free of Kate and stormed into the bedroom. Grabbing her clothes, she went into the bathroom and locked the door. She looked at herself in the mirror and started to cry. 'I can't believe what just happened' she said to herself as she got dressed. When she was pulling up her pants, she heard Kate's voice through the door.

"Jinny? Baby...what's wrong?" Kate was worried. She knew this was a blow to Jinny's image... she knew that Jinny must be petrified. She was just about to call Jinny's name again when the bathroom door flew open and Jinny stood there, tears running down her cheeks.

"BABY?!?! What's with that *baby* crap?! She wouldn't have known if.. if... God DAMNIT!!" Jinny rushed past Kate and out into the living room. She went to the couch and found her shoes. Sitting down, she slipped them on one by one and was about to get up when she felt a hand on her shoulder. Looking up, she saw Kate. "Get OFF me!" she screamed. "How could you just.. TELL her... how.. just.. leave me alone!" Jinny stormed out of the house, slamming the front door behind her.

Kate watched the younger woman leave and tears came into her eyes. She had jumped the gun, and she knew it. Sighing, she contemplated going after Jinny, but decided that that would just result in another scene. Picking up the phone, she dialed a number. "Hey.. Magda? Yes, it's Kate... no, it's Jinny... she left, she's mad... yeah, would you? Thanks." Hanging up the phone, Kate walked back into her bedroom and shut the door quietly.

***ANCHORSIDE***
Jinny stared at the bottom of her glass. It had been emptied out 5 times already, but she wanted another one. Signaling the bartender, she motioned to her glass and didn't notice Magda sitting down on the stool next to her until she spoke.

"Hey Jin" Magda said and Jinny jumped. When her friend turned to look at her she gave her a half-smile. "Why are you here now?" she asked, not wanting Jinny to know that Kate sent her looking for her.

Jinny shrugged and started to drink the newly replenished drink in her hands. She knew Magda wasn't too happy with her at this moment in time. When she felt Magda take the drink out of her hand, however, she got angry. "Hey! That's mine! I... I paid for that!" Jinny said loudly, trying to get the drink back from Magda.

Magda nodded at the bartender and took Jinny by the arm. "No you didn't.. I did. And you're too drunk to go home. You're sleeping on my couch." Magda tuned out all the rest of what Jinny was saying. Sure, she didn't feel 100% comfortable with the situation, but Jinny was her best friend.

When they got back to Magda's place, the alcohol was clearly hitting Jinny hard. She could barely stand up on her own, let alone walk, so Magda ended up being the human crutch. Opening her door, Magda watched as Jinny practically fell inside. Picking her up, she held her in place and flipped on a light.

"You know.... Mag...." Jinny slurred, quite obviously drunk "I must thank you for this..." Jinny tried to stand on her own, but found that she couldn't. She let Magda walk her over to the couch and she sat down, pulling Magda with her. "I have a question..." she asked slowly, concentrating on every word.

Magda sighed, this was going to be a long night. "What is it Jinny?" She looked at her best friend who was clearly struggling with what she was going to say.

"Wait... first... though..." Jinny stumbled around her words and leaned in towards Magda, trying to kiss her, but Magda backed away.

"Jinny! For crying out loud!" Magda got up from the couch and watched her friend fall over and then prop herself back up again. She then watched as Jinny tried to stand up, but fell. Sighing again, she leaned over to pick Jinny up and found that again, Jinny was trying to kiss her. "Jinny.. you are DRUNK... do you hear me... DRUNK!!!" she shouted and propped Jinny on the couch. "Now, you need to go to sleep."

Jinny watched as Magda went towards the closet on the other side of the room and got out a blanket. Her head was foggy from the alcohol and she drifted off to sleep before Magda could even cover her over.

'Thank god' Magda thought as she covered Jinny over. Going over to the light switch, she flipped it off and headed to her bedroom.

***MAGDA'S HOUSE-NEXT MORNING***
Magda walked out of her bedroom dressed and ready to go to work. She glanced at her couch and Jinny was still there, sleeping. 'I'll just let her sleep' she said to herself, as she grabbed her coat, keys, and badge and went out the door.

***THE DIVISION***
Kate McCafferty sat at her desk with her head in her hands. Last night was not exactly wonderful. She hardly slept.. she was worried about Jinny, but she figured Magda would have called if she didn't find her. Walking over to her door, she went out into the division. CD and Angela were already there, but Magda and Jinny were no where to be seen. Just then, Magda walked in looking haggard.

"Hey Cap" Mag said and walked over to Kate. "She's at my place" she whispered and gave the captain a small smile. She was about to turn back to go to her desk when she heard the captain ask if she would go into her office. Following Kate, she went in and shut the door behind her. "I suppose you want to know what happened..." she started, and Kate nodded.

"Well.. she was at Anchorside... and drunk. I took her home with me and she could barely stand up. She... didn't say anything to me about what happened, so don't worry." Magda looked down at the floor and waited for the captain to respond.

Kate breathed a heavy sigh of relief. Jinny was ok. Looking at Magda, she knew she deserved an explanation. "Magda.." she started, and waited for the puerto rican to look at her. "It hasn't been going on that long. Two nights ago was the first time... I... I've liked her for awhile, but that's besides the point. Anyway..." Kate continued with the story, letting Magda know all about Beth and Bobby and everything that had happened. When she finished, she looked at Magda, who had a new, understanding look in her face.

***MAGDA'S HOUSE***
Jinny woke up and looked around. She was at Magda's place and she was late for work. 'Why didn't she wake me up' she thought, and then remembered what had happened last night... how she got the note... went over to Kate's... how Magda caught them... the fight... coming back here with Magda. Jinny held her head in her hands. Her life was a mess, she didn't even know what she wanted from it. Reaching for the phone, she dialed a number and waited for someone to answer. "Hey Casey" she said, and started to cry.

***CASEY'S HOUSE***
Casey listened to the voice of his sister on the other end of the phone. He didn't hear John pick up the phone a few seconds after he did. "Hey Jin, what's up?" Casey listened for a bit... she tried to say it was nothing,but he wasn't believing her. John sat in the other room and was about to hang up the phone when he heard Jinny say something that made his blood boil.

*~*phone coversation*~*
Jinny: Casey... I slept with a woman...
Casey: Uh.. Jinny?
Jinny: I did. And I don't know what to do. I'm... kinda.. even in this.. relationship... kinda. Oh god, I don't know... we got in this fight...

*They hear a phone click off hard*
Jinny: Casey?
Casey: Yeah, I'm here.. what was that?
Jinny: I don't know.. I'm at Magda's...
Casey: You slept with Magda?!
Jinny: NO! I was drunk last night. Look.. I'm coming over...

Casey is still on the phone when he hears John slam the front door... and he suddenly knows what just happened. Sighing, he continues to talk.

Casey: Jinny, I think I know what the click was. See, John was over here for lunch and..
Jinny: Oh my god! HE knows?! Ok.. Casey, I'm coming over... I need someone to talk to.
Casey: Ok, Jinny.. be careful.
Jinny: I will. Bye Case.

Jinny hangs up the phone and runs her fingers through her hair. She couldn't believe that John had heard what she had said to Casey. It was probably the worst case scenario... at least he didn't know WHO it was. Walking out of Magda's place, she started down the street. 'At least Casey's place is close' she thought and continued walking.

John walked down the street towards the police station, which was also the way to Magda's place. His mind was spinning. Now both of his siblings disgusted him. 'I can't believe this' he thought and got even madder. 'First off, Jinny's a slut, now she's going around sleeping with women?!' John looked up the street and spotted a woman dressed in black coming his way... it was Jinny!

Jinny walked with her head down and didn't realize John was coming towards her until he was practically in front of her. Looking up, she saw her brother's red face inches from hers. "John.." she started, but was cut off by her brother.

"Why if it isn't Jinny, my wonderful disgusting sister!" he shouted. People were starting to stare, but he didn't care. "It's not bad enough you have to be a slut and sleep around, but now you sleep with GIRLS too?! God, you're just like Casey!!!" John walks over to the nearest pole and kicks it, recieving gasps from onlookers.

Jinny was frozen to the spot. She remembered how John had been when he found out about Casey.. how she had to take Casey to the emergency room to get stitches. Finally, she got her voice, and started to yell back, just like she always did. "How DARE you call me disgusting! I'm not! I'm your SISTER, for crying out loud!" Tears were forming in Jinny's eyes now and she couldn't hold them back. "And you've never cared what I did before, so why do you care now?!"

John turned around and glared at his sister. "That's a bunch of bull, Jinny!" He ran towards her and grabbed her by her shoulders.

***THE DIVISION-CAPS OFFICE***
Kate McCafferty was sitting in her office wondering if she should give Jinny a call at Magda's place when her phone rang. "McCafferty.... Uh huh. Where at? Ok..I'll be right there." There was a disturbance downtown and she had no officers available to check it out. 'I guess I'll have to go check it out myself' she thought, and grabbed her coat.

***DOWNTOWN-JOHN&JINNY***
Jinny was laying on the sidewalk. She'd been there for a couple of minutes now, and John was still kicking her. She had tried to fight back at first, but she was so hungover and weak today it wasn't working... all she could do was curl up so it didn't hurt as bad.

When Kate McCafferty pulled onto the scene, she found John Exstead Jr. kicking his sister, Jinny, and yelling expletives at her. "SFPD! FREEZE! John, get the hell away from Jinny!" She watched as John backed away with his hands up, his face angry. Rushing over to Jinny, she bent over. "Are you ok?" she asked, worried.

Jinny looked into Kate's eyes who were peering into hers. "Yeah.. I'm.. fine" she managed to say and tried to stand up, but the pain in her side was too unbearable and she layed back down with tears in her eyes. "Maybe not" she whispered.

Kate looked at Jinny and her heart broke. If only they hadn't gotten into a fight last night none of this might have happened. Sighing, she placed her hand on Jinny's shoulder. "I'm taking you to the hospital. My backup is taking John away." Slowly Kate stood up and looked at Jinny's brother being escorted into the nearby police car.

***THE HOSPITAL***
Kate sat in the waiting room of the ER impatiently. Jinny had been in there for a half hour already and no one was coming out to tell her anything. Just then, she looked up and saw Casey rushing in. Getting up, she nodded cordially. "Casey.."

Casey walked over to captain McCafferty and nodded. He couldn't believe his brother would do this. I mean, what he had done to Casey was.. well, the same thing, but this was JINNY. "How is she? Any word?"

Kate shook her head and sighed. "Nope. She's been in there a half hour." As she looked towards the doors a doctor came out and looked around.

"Exstead?" he asked and waited for a response. Both Kate and Casey walked over to him. "Hi, I'm doctor Richards" he said and extended his hand. "Jinny's going to be fine. She just has some bruised ribs and internal bruising. She'll.. need a nice comfortable bed to sleep in for the next week or so."

Casey nodded. Jinny had a comfortable bed at her apartment... that wouldn't be a problem. "Sure doc, can we see her?" The doctor nodded and then walked away. As Casey was about to follow him, he felt a hand on his arm and looked towards Kate.

Kate looked into Casey's eyes. Jinny had told her on the ride over that she had told Casey she was in a relationship with a woman, but that she didn't say who yet. "Casey.. Jinny can't stay at her apartment. She's been recieving threats. She's been staying with me." Kate watched Caseys face. At first it seemed as normal as it could possibly be, but then realization dawned and his entire look changed.

Casey didn't know what to think. Was the captain telling him what he thought she was telling him? "Uh.. what do you mean by staying with you? I mean, I don't want to jump to conclusions, but Jinny was telling me about this relation.." he was cut of by Kate's nod.

"Yes Casey, I'm telling you what you think I'm telling you. And... if it would be ok... since she can't stay at her place... I'd like to keep her at mine." Kate let out the breathe she had used to say that and took a long look at Caseys face, which promptly broke out into a smile.

***JINNY'S HOSP. ROOM***
Kate and Casey walked in to Jinny's room and walked over to Jinny's bed. She was lying there in obvious pain, but other than that, she looked ok. Casey picked up his sister's hand and held it. "I'm SO sorry Jin... I didn't know he was listening." He looked at Jinny nod and squeezed her hand. "And.. um... Kate told me about..." he trailed off, seeing Jinny smile slightly.

"Couldn't even save that for me..." she said sarcastically and laughed a little. Laughing hurt, but she needed to do it. Looking at Kate, she smiled. "Thanks though... I don't think I could've done it."

Kate nodded and went over to Jinny, taking her other hand. "I couldn't believe it when I saw John.. and then you..." she looked into Jinny's eyes. "I'm glad your ok. And you're staying with me until you feel better." Kate watched Jinny's face light up, and she felt better about this whole thing. It still wasn't going to be out in the open. Magda already knew that she was to say nothing.. and Casey wouldn't say anything either. She knew everything was going to be okay... finally... her life was going to be okay.
