View Full Version : New fanfic: "Oh, Baby"
80skid 08-28-2001, 02:29 PM Note: This is a sequel to Crossed Paths, that fanfic from a few months ago. Basically, it takes place about four months later, and yup, involves a younger Teddy! So sit back and relax and enjoy the show! You'll see how the title fits in with the next part, under this same topic... so keep checking this topic!
"Guess who's transferring!" I ran down the school hallway to my friend Magda's locker and stopped as she closed it. "Guess who's transferring to this high school!"
Magda laughed. "Theodore?" she asked, picking up her backpack.
"How'd you know?" I asked, calming down now that Mag knew before I had even told her.
"You told me yesterday," Magda said, "and the day before that, and the day before that. Forgotten already?"
I laughed. "Guess so. Anyway, he's coming Monday, and I was thinking..."
"Yeah?" Magda asked.
"His locker's going to be closer to yours' since you're in the same homeroom as he is, and since I'm not... could we... could we..?"
"Switch lockers?" Magda answered, "Jin, I'm not about to switch lockers for every guy you meet that just happens to be near my locker. Even if it is Theodore this time."
I nodded. "OK," I answered, "just don't forget to ask him what he thinks of me."
"I told you yesterday I would," Magda reminded me.
I smiled. "I'm going to go home and call him and ask him what he's planning to do this weekend."
"Have a good weekend then with him," Magda said as I began to walk out of the hallway, "and don't forget, I'll ask him!"
"I know!" I said, barely listening to her. Teddy, my Teddy, was transferring out of that prep school he went to, and transferring right into the high school I went to. Life was good.
***
Monday came along after a weekend of doing nothing. Teddy had ended up having to get ready for the big switch -- "After all, it's better I do this because the sooner I do that the sooner I'm there," he answered, which made me feel 1000% better about his weekend plans --- and now Monday was coming along, the second week of the final semester of ninth grade.
I ran to school that day, even though I usually walked with John, who either pretended he wasn't walking his fourteen year old sister to the same high school that he, as star quarterback, went to, every day, or just ignored me. I ran further up ahead than John and got there the minute school opened.
"Not like you to be early," Magda said as I ran over to her locker, "you're usually pretty late."
"He here yet?" I asked, panting.
"Not yet. The only people usually here this early are the teachers and anyone who wants to finish up homework." She waved our biology textbook in the air. "I gotta finish up the homework on cell division."
Only people? I sighed. I looked over to the door, wondering if anyone was coming in. And then someone did. Someone who was looking very, very cute that Monday, and someone who just happened to be called Teddy. Dropping my backpack and a couple textbooks, I ran - right into him.

"Ouch!" I moved away from Teddy when I heard him. Obviously, I had literally ran right into him, and that was not the smartest move Jinny Exstead had made today.
"Are you okay?" I quickly asked, gathering my books as well as his.
"I'm fine," he answered as he took his books from my arms, "and you?"
I laughed. "Just fine, Teddy," I answered, looking around to make sure nobody but Mag saw it. "Your locker's right here," I continued, motioning to Magda to make the rounds. "I'm going to go -- to my locker," I finished up, as I heard Magda introduce herself as my best friend. I just hoped Teddy would give an honest answer: I like Jinny a lot, even if she is a little klutzy when it comes to saying 'Hi.'
***
"So, how was your first day?" I asked as we walked home together.
Teddy smiled. "I managed to get lost twice, but you know, other than that..."
"Just twice?" I asked jokingly, "that's a new record. I got lost six times the first day." I didn't mention that four out of those six times were accidental trips to the wrong locker room, the one belonging to the guys. "Did you talk to Magda?" I asked.
"The one near my locker?"
"Yeah, her. Did you?" I asked.
"Yeah."
"What'd you say?"
"She said for me not to repeat it to you because she'll call you and tell you," he answered.
"C'mon, tell me! I won't tell her I know," I answered.
"Nope," he answered, smiling as we turned to his house.
"Well, then, see ya tomorrow," I said, walking to my own house. He nodded and went in; and I broke into a run so I could make Magda's phone call.
***
"Well, what'd he say?" I kept my voice quiet so Casey, in the living room with me, could watch television.
"He said he really likes you."
I screamed. Casey turned around and gave me a look. "Jinny, I'm trying to watch Facts of Life here!" he whispered.
"Oh, shut up. Not you, Mag. Casey's trying to watch Facts of Life and just told me I can't interrupt his beloved Blair." I continued. "What else?"
"He thinks you're really cute and nice."
I stopped myself from screaming. "And...?"
"That's all," Mag concluded.
"He thinks I'm cute and nice and he really likes me." I sat back on the sofa and smiled. I enjoyed those words, but I had no idea what would become out of just those words.
*More to come!* Thoughts?

80skid 08-30-2001, 11:35 AM (OK, here's some more!!!)
It was the following Monday when the rumor broke out. I never really listen to rumors -- always about someone who did something and it just goes around the school 'til everyone knows about it -- but when I heard someone say, "There's Jinny" as I walked down the hall to English, something was definitely up. And not good for me.
Magda was sitting in the front row when I got there. Looking at me, she said, "So, what's this I've heard about you and Teddy?"
I looked at her questioningly (sp). "What?" I asked. OK, it was all out now: we had gone to the movies on Saturday. Oh, no. I laughed quietly and thought if that was the rumor, then I didn't really even care.
"The rumor Teddy got you pregnant. Just a huge, big rumor going on that you're pregnant. Geez, Teddy must be feeling awful right now knowing he's the new kid and subject of a rumor."
"I'm subject of the rumor too!" I answered, taking out my copy of Lord of the Flies and reading over the chapter, "he's not the only one."
"I know," Magda answered, "you're the one pregnant."
"I'm not!"
"Well, that's what everyone thinks, Jin, so..." Magda's voice trailed off. I could tell she wasn't sure on who was right here.
"I'll clear up that rumor." I barely concentrated during English. Jinny Exstead was subject of a rumor -- and she had to clear that up before anything else.
***
I first went to Teddy. Ask him where he heard it, ask him what he's thinking -- give him the third degree a little and then see what happens.
He asked me first at my locker. Totally unplanned for that, I casually answered, "Well, I heard it from Magda, but I don't know who she heard it from."
Teddy looked at me, trying to decide whether or not to believe me.
"It's not true though," I added.
"Well, that's obvious, Jinny," he answered.
"Yeah, really." What else was there to say?
"But I don't want to be part of this rumor," he answered.
"I know you don't!" I said, trying to keep from crying, "but that doesn't mean I have to!"
"Well, Jinny, you can't stop one. It's either Teddy got someone pregnant or Jinny's pregnant."
"And I bet you want it to be just Jinny's pregnant, don't you?" I asked sarcastically, "just 'Jinny's pregnant' so Teddy can get off free."
He nodded. Slamming my locker as hard as I could, I walked off and thought nothing could be worse. Until the principal came over and asked for me to meet him in his office.
Should I add more? Replies please!

80skid 08-30-2001, 01:41 PM (enjoy!)
Yup. I was in for it. One minute I was slamming my locker in Teddy's face, the next a door was close to slamming in my face -- the principal's office.
Mr. Smith looked at me from behind his desk. He hadn't heard too much about me up til today, and he didn't want to hear about me like he did. Maybe he knew John. If I mentioned John was my brother - John, straight-A's and everything - I'd get brownie points for that and he'd let me off the hook.
"Virginia Exstead, hmm?" he asked, looking at me.
"Related to John," I answered proudly.
"Don't know him."
Darn!
"Anyway, Virginia," he continued, "I've just heard a rumor that I'm hoping isn't true. As a ninth grader, you probably don't know the policy around here if someone, er, becomes pregnant. We suspend them for a couple days..."
"Suspend?" I asked.
"Oh, no, not suspend like detention suspend," he quickly said, "we just have them go home for a couple days and check with their doctors or whoever to see if they're really pregnant and maybe just stay home and do work there. We don't want to have any student who's pregnant work too hard or anything like that."
I couldn't believe it. Smith was carrying on, sort of nicely about it all -- I was fearing suspension, explusion and some other "sions" if there were any, -- and I wasn't even pregnant in real life! Somehow someone must have told him the rumor was verified.
"I'm not pregnant," I interrupted.
"But I heard you were."
"I'm not. I'm definitely not pregnant and I don't know where you heard all that."
He sighed. "Oh."
Oh? That was it? No 'I'll tell the school to stop saying that' or anything? I worried that Teddy was now hating me. I remembered what I said... So you just want it to be the Jinny rumor, with no Teddy? or something like that.
"Aren't you going to tell everyone I'm not?" I asked.
"No," he said. "You are."
Oh no. I had thought clearing up a rumor was just to tell the ninth grade. But as I heard kids outside, older than fourteen and fifteen, talk about how Jinny Exstead was in the principal's office 'cause she was pregnant, I realized I had to tell the whole school. And apologize to Teddy.

"Magda, have you seen Teddy anywhere?" I ran up to her, panting, out of breath from Smith's office. I had ran out of there, not looking back or anything. Just getting out of there before he talked more.
"Yeah." Magda put her books in her locker. "He's kind of upset, you know, over the whole rumor thing. He told me to tell you that you can forget it about being so nice and everything." She sighed. "What'd you say to him?"
I leaned back on someone's locker and groaned. "Only the fact since he didn't want to be part of the rumor, I would so he could get off easy. I didn't mean it to sound so.. so..."
"Mean?" Teddy stood in front of me. I straightened up and looked at him. "Jinny, if you don't mind, I gotta get my stuff out of my locker," he said as I bit my lip to keep from crying again -- what was with him? --"and you're in my way."
"It just so happens," I said quickly, "I talked to Mr. Smith and he said I should tell everyone the rumor's not true."
"Good. Tell everyone that." Teddy closed his locker and walked off. I stopped myself from running after him. Instead, I went into the bathroom and had a short, but good, cry.
***
At assembly that day I decided to speak out. It was stupid, doing it at assembly, but I decided to do that as it was the only time the whole school was together.
There was this time where anyone who wanted to stand up and say something could. Of course, I seized that moment and went up to the microphone to do that.
"Umm..." I said, hesitating. "My name's Jinny Exstead," I started over again, and I saw John look at me and roll his eyes. "And I'm a freshman and I'm the subject of that rumor going around.
Mr. Smith told me to tell everyone I'm not pregnant. I don't know where you got that rumor from or who decided they'd ruin a social life -- (I know, I was just a little exaggerating) -- but I'm not pregnant. So don't think that."
I left, sitting down in my seat and just trying to look as natural as possible -- which isn't easy when a lot of people are staring at you.
That was when Mr. Smith called the assembly to a close. I ran out, walking towards the cafeteria to get something to eat. I felt a hand on my shoulder and I turned around.
"Jinny, let's talk." Teddy was behind me, looking desperate, thoughtful, and -- guilty?

Guilty. Very guilty. Extremely guilty.
So was the look on Theodore Blumenthal's face.
And mine was too. Guilty, feeling bad about what I said to him. Guilty of just being.. guilty... or something.
"Talk away," I said.
"I'm really sorry about being upset with you and all," he said, "and I know it's not your fault."
"Sure isn't yours either."
"That's right." He smiled. So far, so good. Was that some peace offering creeping into Teddy's face? An apology for being upset?
"I'm sorry, Jinny. Sorry for just being upset and I know it wasn't yours or my fault. I'm sorry."
"It's okay," I said. Was it? I didn't know.
"Anyway..." he said, "how about you and me walking home today?"
"Sure," I said.
"I'll meet you at your locker," he said, "4:00."
"Okay," I said as I walked over to my locker then and got out a couple books. Life was back to normal.
I wouldn't ever know who started the rumor, or why they did about a new kid, but I knew that day walking home with Teddy that from now on anything between us wouldn't hurt us. Next rumor around, I'd never get upset with him. But for now I was just taking it one day at a time. With Teddy along for the ride.

<3 u, Jacob!
You're coming back angrily from a Sunday service because all of your family tried to convert you into a true Christian. Yeah, you've been going to church, but you just don't buy all this Holy, Holy stuff. You take a bite of your peanut-butter sandwich, which is your breakfast. During the process of angrily honking your horn at a slow milk-truck in front of you, with about 40,000 bumperstickers on it, a wad of peanut butter gets stuck in your throat. You start coughing, and the car swerves uncontrollably. You run into the milk-truck, and it turns over on top of you, spilling milk all through your windshield and flooding your car. You stay there, almost drowning in milk, until you vaguely hear sirens and muffled voices. They carefully pull you out of the car, and place you on the strecher. One of the last things you see are two bumper stickers on a twisted piece of metal left from the truck, side by side. One of them says, "Got Milk?" the other says, "Got God?" As you are being loaded into the ambulance, you use the last of your strength to give out one final cry of pain. You close your eyes in prayer, asking the Lord to forgive you of your sins, thanking him for sending his Son to die on the cross for you. Suddenly some of what the strange man up in the pulpit has been preaching clicks in your mind, and you start to weep. You feel your strength flowing from you, but you stay calm, still mouthing, "Thank you, Jesus." You calmly take your last breath, knowing that you've finally figured something out, you've given your life to Christ, and you're going to Heaven...
Okay, was that too dramatic? Hmm, dunno, but I felt the need to type it, I've been in a witnessing mood lately. ?I intend to take this board for Jesus, well, if not at least one person, and all you have to do is do just what the person did in the story, that might be a real scenario someday, all I can tell you is be prepared. Well, TJ will kill me for this signature, buh-byezies! :)
