k all.. this fanfic takes place 3 weeks after "A New Understanding" Jinny is healed and she's been staying at Kate's house for the whole time.

Jinny looked at herself in the mirror, and frowned at what she saw. For some reason, the outfit was missing something. Sitting on the bed next to Kate, she grabbed the book out of the captain's hands. "What's missing?" she asked and waited for a response... all she got was a puzzled look. "Umm.. my look.. the outfit is missing something..."

Kate looked Jinny over and then her focus rested on her hair. "Pull your hair up" she said, and smiled. "Now give me back my book!" she reached over for her book, but Jinny held it just out of reach.

"Come and get it" she said and ran out of the room. She waited as Kate got up off the bed and ran after her. Smiling, she waited some more until Kate was almost to her, then she started moving again, laughing. In fact, she was laughing so hard she had to stop, letting Kate catch up to her, snatch the book out of her hands and wrap her arms around her waist.

Kate smiled. She was glad to have the fun-loving Jinny back. Those first few days out of the hospital were torture for the inspector... and for the captain. Soon, she felt Jinny's hands trying to get her arms from around her waist. Loosening her grip, she let Jinny free and the inspector ran into the bedroom again. Sighing, Kate followed her. They were going to be late for work... but for some reason she didn't care.

When she got into the bedroom, Jinny was sitting on the bed indian style. Walking over, she sat next to her, taking her hand. "You ready for today?" she asked, knowing the secret would be hard to keep after three weeks alone together. She watched Jinny nod slowly and sighed. Leaning in, she gave her a kiss and they both reclined onto the bed.

***THE DIVISION***
Jinny walks into the division right in front of the captain... they were over an hour late. Ignoring the look that Magda was giving her, Jinny sat down at her desk and started opening a folder.

Magda couldn't help smirking to herself. Walking over to Jinny's desk, she sat down on it. "Wake up late?" she asked, smiling. When Jinny looked back at her, she would've been dead if looks could kill. "Ouch. That stare hurts" she laughed and went back to her seat.

sorry it took so long, here's more:

Jinny just continued to stare at Magda. She couldn't have people overhearing comments like that... they would begin to suspect, and she didn't want that. "Mag... I swear, one more comment like that and I'm not talking to you ever again." Jinny looked back down at the folders on her desk, ignoring Magda's shocked expression.

She couldn't believe what she had just heard. Magda knew that Jinny and Kate didn't want anyone to know what was going on, but she didn't think what she had just said was a big deal. 'Well, maybe she's still irritable' she said and smiled to herself. "Sure, Jin. Got it."

CD looked up from her desk. Jinny was snapping at Magda, as usual, and it was only her first day back. 'I don't know how Magda puts up with her' she thought, and got up from her desk. "Hey Jinny.. feeling better?" CD asked.

"Yeah" Jinny said, not looking up from her paper work.

"It must've been hell spending three weeks with captain" CD said, laughing. She knew Jinny and Captain Kate McCafferty barely got along to begin with... she couldn't imagine them being together in the same house for three weeks.

Jinny quickly looked up from her desk. "What's that supposed to mean?" she asked nervously. Had Magda told everyone? Looking up at CD, her fears were relieved when the tall blonde got a confused look on her face.

"Uh.. no... is it supposed to?" CD was confused. She hit some kind of nerve, but she had no idea what one. She watched Jinny shake her head and concentrate on the file in front of her again. Sighing, CD walked away... thinking about what would have made Jinny look so... nervous.

Captain Kate McCafferty sat in her office. She knew people would wonder why she was late, but she also knew that only Jinny... and Magda would know why. Sighing, she looked through the case files on her desk. 'I guess I'll have to give this one to Jinny and Magda' she thought, but she didn't want to... for selfish reasons. 'Damnit Kate, you are NOT letting your love life interfere with your work.'

***OUTSIDE IN A CAR***
Bobby Fisher sat watching the building of the San Franciso police department. He had finally found out where Jinny was... she was laid up in bed for three weeks for some reason... and she was staying at her Captain's house. About a week ago he decided to take a chance and spy on her.. follow her around if she went anywhere. 'What luck' he thought to himself and chuckled. He had found out something even more interesting than he had imagined.

Apparently, Jinny and her Captain were more than just employee and boss... they were together. Bobby's eyes narrowed. 'Just like Beth' he thought 'she's such a damn tease... bitch.' He kep thinking back to high school... how she had made out with him... basically promised him sex.. then blew him off for... her. But he had taken care of that. 'And I'm going to take care of this too' he thought, and smiled.

***THE DIVISION LOCKER ROOM***
Jinny walked out of the bathroom stall and went over to the sink. Looking at herself in the mirror, she sighed. She didn't know how she was going to keep this whole thing up. She didn't notice someone coming into the locker room until they spoke.

"Hey Jinny" Kate said and smiled. She watched the inspector dry her hands. 'This is impossible' she thought and walked over to Jinny, placing her hand on her arm. "How you doing?" She watched Jinny smile slightly. 'She looks so cute' she thought.

Jinny knew it was just as hard for Kate as it was for her, and she tried to broaden her smile... tried to make it look like it was okay. Before she knew it, she was in a lip-lock with Kate... and she didn't want to stop.

Magda walked into the locker room and stopped suddenly as she saw Jinny and the captain. "Ahem" she said and watched them separate almost instantly. "You'd better be glad that was me" she said, and she smiled.

***THE DIVISION***
Kate McCafferty walked out of her office and over to the space between her four inspectors desks. She was still embarrassed about what had happened in the locker room, but she had to put it behind her. "Ok.. cases. Delorenzo and Reide... homicide. 30 year old woman was found dead in her house. Neighbor said she heard something. Check it out." She handed the folder to CD and then turned her attention to Jinny and Magda. "Exstead, Ramirez... you get to join a stake out. Sound like fun?" She watched as both Jinny and Magda groaned.

"Cap, are you serious? When?" Magda asked. She hated stakeouts. They were the most boring things in the world. She hoped it wasn't too late, and if it was she needed her sleep.

"7pm to 7am.. tonight" Kate said, and again watched both of them groan. She didn't want Jinny doing this because it would take away from their time, but she really had no choice. The higher ups wanted CD on the homicide. "Go home and rest... both of you." Captain turned around and started to walk away, but then turned to face the inspectors again. "Exstead, before you leave.. my office."

Jinny nodded and turned back to Magda. "Ooohh.. this'll be fun" she said and smiled sarcastically. "You going home?" Jinny watched as Magda nodded and gathered her stuff. "See ya at 7!" she yelled, and leaned back in her chair.

"Oh yes..." Magda said and shook her head. "I'll be there with bells on." Walking out, Magda was shocked they got the stakeout case. 'I would've thought Cap wouldn't want Jinny on one that late.' The thought made her laugh out loud. Realizing people were staring at her, she stopped suddenly and looked down.

Jinny waited a good five minutes before she headed to Kate's office. Knocking lightly on the door, she entered, and shut the door behind her. "You.. wanted to see me?" she asked and smiled alightly.

"Yes yes." Kate looked at Jinny. "I'm sorry about putting you both on this stakeout tonight... I really didn't want to." Kate looked at Jinny again and watched the inspector smile. "But I had no choice... some higher ups wanted CD on the homicide."

Jinny nodded and got up from her seat. "Well... it's not the end of the world. I mean.. ALMOST the end of the world.. I hate stakeouts." She wrinkled her nose and made a face. Smiling, she went towards the door. "Bye Kate."

"Bye Jinny." Kate watched the younger woman leave her office. 'Well, time to get to work' she thought, and pulled out the box of case files from under her desk.

***STAKE OUT***
Magda walked into the room where the stakeout was being held. She smiled at the two men she was going to relieve. "Hey guys.. I'm here... now you can go home." She smiled again and sat down in one of the chairs.

"Where's Exstead?" one of the men asked. He knew Jinny's tendency to be late for everything... and he had heard of the rumors about her alcoholism, but he didn't ask what he really didn't want to know.

"Right here, boys" Jinny said as she walked in looking at her watch. "And I'm not late.. i'm 2 minutes early, thank you very much." She grinned and set the bag she was holding onto the table. "Brought us chinese, Mag, hope you didn't eat."

Magda smiled. "Nope... and I was hoping you'd bring something." She watched as both of the men said goodbye to her and Jinny. "This is going to be one LONG night. Bring anything good with you?"

"Yes Magda, I brought my stack of porn magazines and some beer." Jinny looked at Magda's shocked face, and laughed. "Kidding!!! I did bring magazines though... and some books... and cards... and..."

"Ok ok.. I get the point" Magda said and rolled her eyes. Jinny was so much fun when she was sober... and she had been since this relationship with Kate had started... and that was a good thing. Reaching over, Magda took out some of the chinese containers. "Mmmmm... I'm STARVING!"

Jinny laughed at Magda. It had been awhile since they were together as friends and she was completely sober. The thought struck her as strange, but she liked it. "God Magda, calm yourself down." Both of the women laughed and dug into their food, talking about everything from cars to sex to children.

***OUTSIDE IN CAR***
Bobby Fisher had watched Jinny walk into the room. He figured she was on a stakeout, and he knew she wouldn't be home anytime soon. Taking out his cell phone, he dialed a number and let it ring. "Yeah.. hey, it's me. Both of you meet me at the house in 15, got it? Good." Hanging up, he started his car again and drove off slowly, heading west.

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Kate lay on her bed watching the television. It had been awhile since she had been alone at night and it was an interesting feeling. Sighing, she flipped the tv off and headed to the kitchen. She turned on the kitchen light and was about to open the refrigerator door when she heard a noise. Pausing, she listened, but didn't hear it again. "Hello?" she called, but was cut off when a hand grabbed her from behind and pulled her down to the ground.

"Hello Captain... KATE" a voice whispered, and Kate felt dizzy as something was slipped under her nose... then everything went black.

***STAKEOUT 12:35am***
Magda laughed and shook her head. Jinny was hysterical... she told stories like no one Magda had ever met before. "Are you serious? Whatever, Jin." She smiled again and then looked at Jinny. There was a question she wanted to ask her... and she wanted to get her side of it all. "Ok, Jin, in all honesty, how did this whole thing with Kate start?"

Jinny stared at Magda and sighed. 'Might as well get this over with' she thought. "Well... captain found me at Anchorside that one night completely drunk and found out that Bobby was threatening me. So she took my home and since I was off the whole next day I stayed at her house." Jinny watched Magda this whole time. She didn't want to get into too much detail, but she knew she couldn't leave out major details or Magda would know.

"Well, that day I... read her diary. And it had stuff in it about me. Then, that night, well, you know..." Jinny's voice dropped off. "At first I was confused... I didn't like it... but then at the same time I did. I didn't know what to do. Then I got another threat from Bobby and, well.. I went over there and that's when... you showed up." Jinny smiled awkwardly.

Magda laughed. "Yes... I.. um.. remember that. So how's it going now? I mean, obviously you don't want anyone to know..." Magda laughed again. "Like that thing with CD this morning..."

"Oh god" Jinny said and rolled her eyes. "I almost gave myself away." She laughed. "But it's going well. I mean... it's serious. But we're not in a good position to, you know.. tell anyone." Jinny frowned and shrugged her shoulder. "You and Casey know... and John knows I'm... well, yeah..." Jinny remembered how her brother had attacked her and shivered. "He called my cell phone 2 days after he beat the crap out of me, you know. He apologized." Jinny smirked... 'just like my brother' she thought.

***6:45am***
Jinny stared at the screen that her and Magda had been looking at for 12 hours. It had started out to be an interesting night... up until about an hour ago when complete boredom set in.. for both of them. 'Kate should be getting up now' Jinny thought, and smiled. She looked at her watch. "Hey Mag... 15 more minutes!"

Magda smiled. "Thank god" she said and started packing things up. "Nothing ever happens when I'm on these stakeouts. Nothing. I just sit here bored out of my mind." Magda looked around, looking for anything she missed. "And now we have to go to work today at... 10?"

Jinny nodded. It was the standard proceedure. She usually would have a problem with going in after a stakeout, but she was only going to see Kate for less than an hour before Kate had to go to work at 8. Sighing, she leaned back in the chair, praying for the last 15 minutes to go by fast.

***ABANDONED HOUSE***
Bobby Fisher looked at Captain Kate McCafferty, pleased. She had been easier to kidnap than he had expected... being a police captain and all. He looked into her eyes and smiled. "So Kate... you remember me, don't you? Too bad your girlfriend wasn't home to save you." He laughed and watched as the captain tried to speak, but her gag prevented it. "Oh.. yes.. I do mean Jinny, captain."

Kate McCafferty looked at Bobby with disgust. She couldn't believe how stupid he was being. Once Jinny found out about this she would have every cop in the city out looking for her. She just stared back at Bobby, trying not to show any fear.

***KATE'S HOUSE***
Jinny placed the key in the door and unlocked it. Opening the door, she yelled for Kate. "Kate! I'm home!" she said and shut the door behind her. Not getting a response, she walked into the living room and then the bedroom. Kate wasn't there. Wrinkling her nose, she walked to the kitchen and turned on the light. What she saw made her sick. Spray painted all over the walls was the message "Jinny, if you want her back... you have to find me..."

Jinny sank down to the floor and sobbed. Bobby had taken Kate. How could he? He took Beth, and now he had taken Kate. Kicking her legs out, she lay on the floor and just cried, remembering when she had found out about Beth 16 years ago.

Jinny was sitting in her room. Her dad hadn't called her all day since he had caught her and Beth in the kitchen... and she couldn't find Beth anywhere. Curled up into a little ball, she just sat there crying. When the telephone rang, she was startled and then quickly picked it up. "Hello?" she asked and then dropped the phone.
*~*end flashback*~*

Jinny slowly got up and wiped her eyes, but that was useless, she was still crying. Then she saw the note. Walking over towards it, she picked it up and read.

So I took another one... but this time you have a chance to save her. Find me... but if I hear about any other cops involved, your precious captain is dead. Don't worry, Jinny, I don't want any money... what I want is immaterial...

Staring at the note, Jinny had some hope. She went towards the phone, but then thought better of it. 'I have to find her myself' she thought. Tears still streaming down her face, Jinny walked out of the house and got into her car. "What now?" she said out loud, and sighed. She just couldn't stop crying... what did Bobby have against her? She didn't even know. Turning on the engine, Jinny just drove around.

About 30 minutes later she was at Anchorside. She had tried to avoid it, but eventually the urge to drink just consumed her. Walking in, she sat down at the bar, and nodded to the bartender. He knew her drink order by now. When the glass was placed in front of her she looked at it and picked it up. Just then, her cell phone rang and she fumbled for it. "Exstead" she said wearily, and waited for the person on the other end to speak.

***ABANDONED HOUSE***
Kate looked at the phone shoved near her face, then heard Jinny's immastakable voice. "Jinny... it's me" Kate said and listened as Jinny started to cry on the other end. "I'm ok. It's almost like home... really." Kate was desperately trying to give Jinny some clues as to where she was... she was only about a block away from her house... she recognized it. "Please find me" she added, and choked on a tear.

Bobby clicked the phone off. He couldn't let her talk to long... just enough to get Jinny moving. He had had Mark, his friend, tailing Jinny and he just reported that she went into Anchorside and ordered a drink. "Like hearing her voice? Well... let's hope for your sake you get to hear it again."

***ANCHORSIDE***
Jinny stared at her cell phone and then at the drink in her hand. 'What the hell am I doing here drinking?!' she yelled at herself and put the drink back down. Pulling out a ten, she placed it on the bar. "Keep the change" she said and walked away, not having touched her drink.

Jinny walked out of the bar and rubbed her eyes. It was still fairly early in the morning, and she must've looked like a complete loser, but she didn't care. She just kept thinking about what Kate had said on the phone... and what Bobby had wrote in the note. *It's almost like home... but if I hear about any other cops involved... please find me... your precious captain is dead...* The thoughts swam around in her head and the tears started to come again. 'I have to call Mag' she thought, then remembered about the cops thing. 'But who says they know Magda's a cop' she thought, and dialed her number.

***MAGDA'S HOUSE***
Magda was laying down in her bed finally just ready to take a nap when her phone rang. Groaning, she got up and picked up the reciever. "Hello?" she said in a groggy tone. "Jinny? Jinny... what's wrong?" Magda listened and her sleepiness wore off immediately. "Jin, we have to let the police commisioner know, we have..." She was cut of by Jinny, and her eyes widened. "Ok Jin, I'll meet you at Casey's." She hung up the phone and sat motionless on the bed for a second, then grabbed some street clothes and changed.

***CASEY'S HOUSE***
Casey Exstead sat on his living room couch watching television. His shift didn't start for another four hours, but he was used to getting up this early. When his doorbell rang, he got up slowly. 'Now who could that be?' he wondered, and opened the door. There stood his sister Jinny, puffy eyed and trembling. "Oh my god.. Jinny, what happened?" Casey looked worried. He didn't know if she'd bee drinking or if something else had happened.

Jinny started to cry again. She had been able to keep it under control for the walk to Casey's house, but now it just couldn't be stopped. "She... she's gone" she managed to get out before sinking down to the floor. "He took her. Bobby took her. He's got her somewhere." She looked hopelessly at her brother from her position on the floor. "He took another one.." she whispered.

Casey couldn't believe what he was hearing. Bobby Fisher had killed Jinny's best friend 'and girlfriend' he thought when Jinny was 16. Now he was out and he had gotten Kate? What cruel monster was he? Before he could say anything, his doorbell rang again, and with a confused look he answered it.

When Casey answered the door, Magda saw the worry in his eyes... then she saw Jinny sitting on the floor crying. "Hey Casey... Jin called me" she said, and moved over to Jinny, sitting down next to her and putting her arm around her shoulder. "We'll find that bastard, Jinny... I promise."

***CASEY'S HOUSE AROUND 12 HOURS LATER***
Jinny was pacing back and forth in Casey's living room. They didn't know where to start. She had repeated what Kate had said on the phone this morning over and over again. Why would she say "it's almost like home"? There had to be a reason.

Magda watched her best friend as she walked across the living room. She was worried about her... and she hoped she could keep her promise. Sighing, she looked at Casey, who had a discouraged look on his face. Everyone was losing hope... no one knew what to do. The ringing of Jinny's cell phone startled her and her attention was brough back once again to Jinny as she watched her answer it.

Jinny quickly reached for her cell phone and pressed the button to answer it. "Exstead" she answered eagerly. She needed to get more hope... she needed to get another clue. The voice on the other end laughed and her eyes narrowed. 'That a**hole' Jinny thought, as tears started forming.

"I suppose you want to talk with Kate, Jinny" the voice on the phone said. "Well... if it inspires you, I just might let you...."

Jinny listened to the voice. "Let me talk to her" she said in even tones, trying not to let him know how hysterical she felt. Finally, a fading voice was instructing someone that they only had a minute, and Jinny heard Kate's voice again.

"Jinny, it's me. I'm ok. Like I said, it's... almost like home." Kate paused and Jinny waited intently.

"Kate, what else? Is there anything else? Please..." she died off, crying. "I need to find you.." she whispered.

"Yes, I really am fine Jinny, but you know, I hate this kitchen." The phone got clicked off immediately, and Jinny stared at the instrument giving her dead air.

***ABANDONED HOUSE***
Bobby was infuriated. Little miss Police Captain had told Jinny she was in a kitchen. Now she knew Kate was in a house. 'But she still won't know what house' he thinks, and relaxes a bit. 'But she still needs to be taught a lesson...'

***CASEY'S HOUSE***
Jinny looked to Magda and Casey, stunned. She didn't know what to make of what Kate had just said into the phone. "Umm... she said it was almost like home again... and... and that she hated the kitchen..." Jinny said, perplexed. 'What does she mean?' she thought, and ran her hand through her hair in frustration.

Casey looked at his sister. "Well... it means she's in a house... at least that's a start..." he said, trying to get Jinny's hopes up as well as his own. He knew this must be rough on her... he didn't really have a clue... except for how he would feel if anyone ever did that to Jinny.

'She looks a wreck' Magda thought, and got up to go over to Jinny. She stood about a foot away from her and looked into her eyes. "Hey... Casey's right...we're getting somewhere." She kept looking at Jinny when she saw the flicker of recognition in her partners eyes. "What? Jin... What is it?"

"I know where she is" she stated, matter of factly. She looked at her best friend and her brother and saw their disbelieving faces. "No! I know where she is! See... there's this house... about a block from here. Kate was going to buy that one instead of this one, but she hated the kitchen because it was... pink." Jinny saw Magda's eyebrows raise.

"Well then, let's go" Magda said, and placed on her ankle holster, while Casey and Jinny did the same.

***ABANDONED HOUSE***
When Jinny, Casey and Magda got to the door of the house, Magda and Casey stood to the side of the door while Jinny knocked. She needed Bobby to think she was alone when he opened the door. Just then, four men came rushing up and caught her friends by surprise. Jinny looked on in horror as Magda and Casey were both ambushed and held captive. Then she felt a hand on her shoulder and felt a shiver run through her body.

"Why hello there... Jinny" Bobby said into the brunette's ear. "Too bad you broke the rules. You were supposed to do this ALL on your own. Now she's gonna get it... and you're gonna watch." Bobby laughed, and dragged Jinny into the house, bringing her to where Kate was bound to a chair. Throwing her into the arms of two waiting men, Bobby went over to Kate and took out his gun.

"No! I did follow the rules! You said no cops! This is my best friend and my brother!" she shouted. Deep down she knew it wouldn't matter what she said, but she couldn't not try. Tears stung her cheeks as they rushed down them. She watched as Bobby held the gun up to Kate's head. "NOOOO!!!!" Jinny shouted. "Please.... oh god..... please...." Jinny almost collapsed, but the two men held her upright.

Bobby smiled. "What's that?" he asked, and pressed the gun farther into the captain's head. "Maybe I'll... spare her... if you BEG properly." Bobby laughed again, and watched Jinny's face get hope. "But I'm the judge... if you fail...... BANG!!!"

Jinny's eyes went wide and the image of her mother flashed across her brain. She slumped forward, and tears wracked her body. "Please.... Please don't kill her. I'LL DO ANYTHING!!!!!" she looked up at Bobby with pleading eyes. "Anything" she whispered.

Bobby looked at Jinny and nodded to his men to shove her down on her knees. He watched her fall hard and smiled. Bending down he whispered into Kate's ear "Nice to see her beg, isn't it?"

Kate was disgusted. She hated Bobby more than anyone she had ever hated in her life. Hated him for taking her. Hated him for killing Beth. Hated him for treating Jinny like he was. She just looked at Jinny, praying that she would be ok... that she would get through this.

Jinny felt her knees hit the floor and groaned in pain. She knew this was the next step in begging... she knew she had to save Kate. "Bobby, Please, oh god... I don't know what I'd do without her... PLEASE.... don't kill her.... oh god, PLEASE!!!!" her body shook with tears again. "Please... please..." she kept whispering over and over again.

Magda looked at her best friend and tears came into her eyes. She remembered when she was begging for her life in that alleyway... she knew how it felt to beg... but to beg for someone else's life... that had to be harder... it had to do something to you.

'I can't believe this' Casey managed to think. He hadn't really thought since he had been attacked, but now he saw his sister kneeling on the ground, begging for Kate's life, and he didn't know where to turn... what to do. All he wanted to do was go and hug Jinny.

Bobby pulled the gun away from Kate's head and motioned one of the guys holding Jinny to guard the captain. Walking over to Jinny, he lifted her head with his hand and looked at her. "Take her to the bedroom" he told the man holding her, and watched as she was dragged away. Turning back to Kate, he smiled evilly. "Now we'll see if she really loves you."

***ABANDONED HOUSE ABOUT FIFTEEN MINUTES LATER***
Bobby opened the door to the bedroom and shoved Jinny ahead of him, still holding on to her arm. Bringing her to where Kate, Magda and Casey were, he threw her into the arms of one of his men again. Nodding to the man who was guarding Kate, Bobby and him lifted the Captain up and he cradled her in his arms. "Thanks, Jinny, but... I've decided to... keep your captain a little longer... I'm craving something else from you." With that, Bobby walked out of the room with Kate.

"NOOOOOOOOOO!!!!" Jinny screamed and fought the man who was holding her, but he was extremely strong. "But I did what you wanted!!!! I did what you wanted!!!!!!" she cried and fresh tears rolled down her face. After about a minute, the five men holding the three hostages brought out their guns and pointed them at the three, backing away slowly before breaking into a run.

Casey ran over to his sister and brought her into his arms, rocking her back and forth. He could't believe that Bobby would do this... no, scratch that, he did believe it, but he didn't want to. "Jinny, we will find her and save her and he will rot in jail!" Casey screamed and held Jinny tighter.

Magda looked off into the distance where the men had ran to. Her eyes narrowing, she walked over to Jinny and started to rub her back. "Casey's right... we'll find her" she said and stared off into space. "Jinny...." she started hesitantly "what did he... make you do?"

Jinny stared at Magda and narrowed her eyes. She felt disgusting, used, and degraded. "Let's just say I was down on my knees again."

sorry guys.... lots of stuff going on and i didn't feel like writing for awhile.. here's more:

Magda stared at Jinny as what her partner just said sank in. "That creep!" Magda's eyes teared up as she just continued to rub Jinny's back and looked at Casey. He looked as though he had been slapped in the face. He just stared, vacant eyed at his sister and Magda.

***JINNY'S APT***
Jinny, Casey, and Magda were sitting in the living room of Jinny's apartment. Jinny was laying on the couch, tears in her eyes. She couldn't believe she messed this up... couldn't believe that Kate was still with that monster. Sighing, she closed her eyes and saw the image of Kate tied to the chair... of Magda and Casey being held by those thugs... of Bobby. She grimaced. "I'm.. going to take a shower" she said as she sat up wearily.

Casey looked at his sister. He was so angry right now... he wanted to kill Bobby himself. 'Hasn't he done enough damage?' he thought to himself, as Jinny got up from the couch. "Ok, Jinny. Hey.. Mag and I will just.. you know.. think.. maybe we'll come up with something." He watched his sister nod her head and go into her bedroom.

Jinny walked towards her bed and grabbed some clothes she had laying around. Heading to the bathroom, she closed her eyes, just wanting to forget everything. Opening her eyes again, she realized the light was on in the bathroom and went towards it. When she got there she immediately saw all the blood. Jinny stumbled back, tears in her eyes. 'Blood... all this blood' she kept thinking over and over again. Then she looked down at the floor of the bathroom.

Laying there was Kate. Her throat was cut right below the artery.. not puncturing it... but still producing a lot of blood. Her body was brusied and beaten, and her leg was bent under her at an odd angle. Jinny stared, dibelieving, at the sight. Her mind flashed back to when she was 14 and she found her mother. Reliving the whole experience, she started to cry, and then let out a bloodcurdling scream, falling to the ground.

Hearing Jinny scream, Magda leapt to her feet and rushed towards the bathroom. When she got there, she saw Jinny sobbing on the floor and the bloody bathroom... with Kate lying on the floor. "Oh my god...Casey!!! Call 911!!!" Running over to Kate, she felt for a pulse and found a faint one. She had lost a lot of blood and she needed to get to the hospital fast. Turning back to Jinny, she tried to get her to stand up. "Jinny... Jinny... listen to me! She's not dead!! But you can't help her like this... you need to be strong."

Casey ran into the bedroom with the phone in his hand. "Yes.. yes.. we have..." he paused and looked at the sight before him. He saw his sister crying, sitting in front of the bathroom, which was covered with blood. 'Oh my god... she was like this...' He was jolted from his thoughts by the voice on the other end. "Uh.. yeah.. we need an ambulance... there's someone seriously injured. Address? Yeah.. sure.. Um..Harbor View House apartment 2b ... Thanks" He hung up the phone and turned to his sister and Magda.

Jinny just sat there... she couldn't get up. "Not again... no.. this can't be happening again.." she kept repeating. She was oblivious to Magda and Casey as they tried to help her up.. oblivious to the paramedics that came to take Kate to the hospital... oblivious to everything.

***HOSPITAL 2 HOURS LATER***
Jinny, Magda, Casey, CD, and Angela all sat in the emergency room waiting room. Jinny was still in slight shock, but she was now paying attention to what was going on... and she knew it had been forever since they had arrived there. Turning to Magda, she asked "What's going on?" They were the first words she spoke since they had arrived there.

Magda turned to Jinny and stared at her. "Jinny... they won't let us in... none of us. They can't find Amanda anywhere... no one is allowed in.. they're not telling us anything.." She didn't want to worry Jinny, but she also knew she had to tell her the truth. She watched as Jinny's face fell, then became angry.

CD and Angela sat away from the other three. They had gotten a call at the division and had arrived just a half hour ago. Apparently, the captain was found in Jinny's bathroom. They both found this confusing but didn't feel that it was the time to ask any questions. Both of them sat in silence as they waited for any news on their captain... hoping she was okay, but knowing they couldn't do anything.

Casey watched his sister as she finally talked. He grabbed her hand and squeezed it until she looked at him. He could see the anger in her eyes, and he tried to soothe her. "Hey.. everything will be ok. I know you're upset because you can't go in, but..."

"NO!" Jinny shouted and stood up. "It's not going to be alright! It never will be again! I can't believe he did this!!! I can't believe..." she broke off, crying. When she looked up, she saw one of the nurses for the ER standing near the door. Walking over to her, she tapped her on the shoulder. "Excuse me... I want to see Kate McCafferty NOW.. or at LEAST tell me what's going on!"

The nurse looked at the distraught woman and shook her head. "I'm sorry, only family members are allowed..."

Jinny couldn't stand this. She needed to see Kate.. she needed to know how she was doing.. anything. "No, you listen to me... I'm GOING to see her, got it? Now, just let me pass..." Jinny pushed the nurse away, but the nurse was steadfast.

The others watched the scene Jinny was causing in silence. Magda and Casey knew why she was doing this... Kate was more than her captain. They felt bad for her, but there was no way she was going to get past this nurse. CD and Angela exchanged puzzled glances, then looked back at Jinny.

"Look, I'm sorry, but you can't. I know she's your police captain, but..."

"She's more than my police captain!!" Jinny shouted and tried to get past the nurse once more. Finding it was futile, she sighed angrily. "Why won't you let me in?! She needs me! I found her!! She's my girlfriend so just LET ME IN!!!" Jinny shouted one last time.

CD froze when those words came out of Jinny's mouth. She just stared at Jinny and processed what was just said. Finally, turning to Angela with wide eyes, she whispered "Girlfriend?"

CD and Angela continued to stare at each other in both confusion and amazement. Angela shook her head and whispered back "I don't know, CD... maybe it's just a ploy to get in to see her..." She was cut off when she heard Jinny screaming at the nurse again.

"No.. no.. you don't understand! She is my girlfriend! I need to see her.. please.. she was put in this condition because of me..." Jinny stared at the nurse who looked utterly shocked at that last comment. "I DIDN'T DO IT!! Someone wanted to get back at me.. oh god..." Jinny broke down and just held her head. It was then that she realized that CD and Angela were there. 'Oh forget it... it's not like they don't know now...' and she turned back to the nurse. "Look.." she started.

CD got up from where she was sitting and walked over to Magda. The puerto rican didn't look as shocked as her and Angela, so she thought she might know something. Sitting down beside her, she asked "Magda... what's going on? What's Jinny talking about?" CD watched as Magda looked at her with hesitation. "I'm going to get an answer from someone, even if it isn't you" she said.

Magda knew she had to tell CD the truth about what was going on. Sighing, she looked over at Casey,who nodded, then looked back at CD. "Ok.. well..." she started and told CD the whole story. It took awhile, and when she was done, CD looked amazed. "But... you can't tell anyone.. and tell Angela that too. I.. I don't know what would happen to either of them and.."

"I know, Magda, I figured that." No matter what happened between Jinny and Kate as long as it didn't affect the division it wasn't her business. Besides, Kate had been her friend for 14 years... and Jinny was her friend too. She wasn't going to do anything to jeopardize anyone's job. Looking over at Jinny, who was now pacing, she frowned. 'She must be going through hell' she thought, and walked up to her. "Hey Jinny.. look... I know about you and Kate and..."

Jinny looked up at CD with tears in her eyes. "Great... yeah... me and my big mouth..." she said and tears poured down her face. "I just want to see her.. I just want to.." Jinny was interupted by a hand on her shouldler. Whirling around, she saw the doctor standing there. "Can I see her? Can I go in?" she asked depserately as she tried to wipe the tears away in vain.

The doctor stood there, knowing this was a difficult situation. Technically he wasn't allowed to let this woman go in, but he felt bad for her. Nodding, he led Jinny towards Kate's room. "Right this way.." he started "You.. might not like what you see, but..."

When Jinny walked into Kate's room she was met with a sight she never wanted to see. Kate was hooked up to all kinds of machines and tubes were everywhere. There was still evident bruising and her throat was bandaged. Sobbing, she walked over to the captain and took her hand. "Oh my god.. Kate.. I'm sorry..." Jinny couldn't take it anymore. She had to leave. After all the commotion she caused to get in here, she couldn't even stay a minute. Letting go of Kate's hand, she walkedout of the room and back into the waiting area. Without saying a word, she walked out the door, crying.

Casey watched his sister walk out the door and wanted to cry himself. She looked so unbelievably sad. "I'm going after her" he said, turning to Magda, but he saw Magda shake her head. 'Maybe she's right... maybe Jinny needs to be alone' he thought, and sighed. "Ok.. but if she's not back in an hour, I'm going to look for her."

***OUTSIDE SOMEWHERE***
Jinny was walking along the streets of San Francisco. She could barely see through her tears and she didn't know where she was going. To top everything off, it had started to rain and by now Jinny was soaking wet. 'Why does this happen?!? Why do I lose everyone?! My mom... god.. my mom... she left me when I was fourteen.. when I needed her the most' Jinny's tears intensified and she ran her hand through her wet hair. 'And Beth.... he killed Beth.... he killed her.... but that wasn't enough... now he's killed Kate...' Jinny thought 'I can't do this.. I can't go on... I...' Before she knew it, Jinny was in front of the cemetary where both her mother and Beth were buried. 'How did I get here?' she thought, but continued until she came to the first grave on the way... it was Beth's.

Sitting down on the grass, she touched the tombstone and let out a slight gasp as she felt the cold marble. "Beth... I'm so sorry, Beth..." Jinny just sat there and cried. She didn't know what to do, where to turn. She missed Beth terribly, but now she had Kate... but she didn't have Kate if she died too. Slowly, she got up. She needed to see her mother's grave. She hadn't gone there in over 8 years... couldn't bear the sight of it. Walking over towards where it was, Jinny felt lightheaded. Stopping for a minute, she regained her balance and started toward the grave again.

Her mother's tombstone had flowers on it. Fresh flowers. She blinked, but then realized it was probably Casey that had put them there. She smiled 'Good old Casey' she thought and walked slowly towards the grave. Again, she sat down, but then decided just to lay there in the pouring rain, at her mother's grave. "Mom... mom, it's me, Jinny..." she started, as fresh tears poured from her face. "I... I miss you mom... Why did you do it? Why?! You missed my sweet 16... you.. you missed everything!!!" Jinny hit the ground beneath her and slowly fell asleep in the rain.

About a half hour later, she was awoken by the ringing of her cell phone. Sitting up, she pulled it out of her pocket and turned it on. "Exstead" she said wearily. Magda was on the other line. Jinny listened as her partner told her to get back to the hospital. Kate was fading fast. Jinny's whole body was numb. A wave of fear swept through her body as she hung up the phone and frantically ran towards the hospital.

***HOSPITAL***
Magda, Casey, CD and Angela were all waiting impatiently for Jinny's return. The doctor had just come out and told them things weren't looking good, so Magda called Jinny.

'I feel so bad for her.

Just then Jinny burst through the door. She was greeted by Casey's arms around her. Still crying, she hugged him back and didn't let go. She was going to lose someone else, and she didn't need that. "Casey... I'm scared" she finally admitted, and Casey held her tighter.

Magda watched as Casey and Jinny hugged, then noticed the doctor come out of the door. Tensing up, she waited to hear his news.

"McCafferty" he said, and watched as five heads turned his way.

sorry it took so long.. here's more:

Jinny broke away from Casey and practically ran to the doctor standing in the doorway. She was still a little out of it... still didn't believe this was happening to her... to Kate. Stopping herself about two feet from the doctor, she looked at him expectantly.

CD watched as Jinny ran to the doctor. 'This has got to be hard' she thought, as she waited for the news herself. Looking at Angela, they exchanged glances and CD held her breathe.

"How is she, doctor?" Magda managed to get out, knowing that someone had to ask. She was prepared for the worst... and that meant she had to be strong for Jinny, no matter how much she would want to scream and cry herself. As she looked into the doctor's eyes, she couldn't tell what he was thinking.. what he was feeling. All she could do was wait.

"Well.." the doctor started, "We've gotten her stabalized. She'll have to stay in the hospital for awhile though." The doctor looked at all the relieved faces, especially those of the brunette in front of him. "But right now she's awake..." He noticed the immediate bustle in the waiting room as everyone got up. "She's weak, though... and she's asking for a.. Jinny."

Jinny's face was covered in tears of joy as her face erupted into a smile. Kate was asking for her... she was going to be okay. "I'm Jinny" she said, as she wiped her face and stepped closer to the doctor. Following him into the room that she was in earlier that day. Walking over to Kate's bed, she saw that this time she was awake, even though she looked the same. "Hi" she whispered and took her captain's hand. "You're going to be ok..." she smiled weakly and squeezed Kate's hand. "I wish I could've stopped him.." Jinny started to cry again, but was shocked to feel Kate queeze her hand in response.

What came out of captain Kate McCafferty's mouth was barely a whisper. "You did everything you could have done." Her eyes glistened as she looked at Jinny, and her head was foggy from the medication. Closing her eyes, she sighed and knew that she was too weak to day anymore.

Jinny watched the scene in front of her as if it were going on in slow motion. "Kate, I know you shouldn't talk anymore, so don't, but I have to say some things." She took a deep breathe and continued. "CD and Angela know.. they found out when I was freaking out in the waiting room. They... they seem to be okay with it... God, Kate.. I can't... I can't stand here and watch you like this..." Just then, Jinny heard voices behind her and saw the four others standing there.

Magda walked over to her best friend and put her arm around her. She looked at her Captain and tears came to her eyes. "Hey Cap.. it's me, Magda" she said and smiled slightly. "I'll take care of her, ok?" Magda watched as Kate nodded slightly. Turning to Jinny, she smiled and pulled her away so the others could say hello.

CD and Angela walked up to the bed together. Neither of them could believe that this was their Captain in this bed. CD smiled and tried to put on her best face. "Hey Cap. You've.. uh.. looked better..." she said, trying to lighten the mood. The small smile that spread across Kate's face told her she had done the right thing.

Angela was in shock. All she could think was that if Jinny wasn't so stupid this wouldn't have happened. She knew she shouldn't think that, but here was Kate, her captain, lying in this hospital bed. Sighing, Angela just smiled and patted Kate's arm. She was going to fix this... she didn't know how, but she was going to fix it.

Casey sat back and watched this whole thing play out. Going over to his sister, he brought her into a hug and just held her there, wishing that this would all go away, but knowing that it wouldn't.

***JINNY'S DAD'S-THAT NIGHT***
Jinny walked up to the front porch of her dad's house with her duffel bag. Casey and Magda had insisted that she stay somewhere other than her house, and the hospital wouldn't let her stay there. The problem was that both Casey and Magda couldn't take her tonight, so they had arranged for her to stay here. 'The only problem is he doesn't know the whole story' she thought, and sighed as she opened the door.

John Sr. heard his front door open and walked into his living room to see his daughter. "Hey, Jinny girl" he said and went over to embrace her in a hug. He still didn't understand why she was staying here instead of her apartment, but he figured she'd let him know soon. "Come on.. let's get all your stuff upstairs." He led the way up the stairs, Jinny following him slowly.

As Jinny watched her dad ahead of her, she knew she had to tell him eventually why she was here. When they entered her old room, she set the bag down on the floor and walked over to the full length mirror that still hung by her closet. 'God, I looke horrible' she thought and turned back to her dad. "Uh.. dad... there's... something I need to tell you..."

***OFFICE of THE CHIEF OF POLICE***
Brad Rymoth (so i made up a name...), San Fransico's Chief of Police was getting ready to go home when there was a knock on his door. Looking up, he saw his secretary standing there with a memo in her hand. "Yes, Madelyn, what is it?"

Madelyn walked over to her bosses desk and sat the memo down on it. "It's from an inspector at the violent crimes division... Kate McCafferty's." She walked away, leaving Brad to read the memo in silence. She was disturbed about what it said... so he would be even more so.

When Madelyn shut his door again, Brad sighed and picked up the paper on his desk and began to read.

To Whom it May Concern:

I feel that it is my duty and obligation to bring to light a series of events leading to Captain McCafferty's hospitalization. I was informed just today that Captain Kaitlyn McCafferty and one of my fellow inspectors, Jinny Exstead, have been carrying on an intimate relationship with one another. I have also been informed that due to a past circumstance in Jinny's life, that Captain McCafferty was put in danger. I do not know how you will handle this, nor do I have any suggestions. If you have any questions regarding this matter, please feel free to get a signed statement from me.

Brad Rymoth stared at the piece of paper in his hand and slowly balled his fist. He couldn't believe this was happening. Rubbing his forehead, he took some deep breaths. "Madelyn!" he yelled, and waited for her return. He was going to get to the bottom of this, but for now, he had to come up with a temporary solution.

***JINNY'S DAD'S HOUSE***
John Sr. looked at his daughter and waited for her to continue. He didn't think that she was going to tell him what was going on so fast, so he fell silent. He could tell she was struggling with what she was about to tell him. 'I wonder what it is' he thought as he looked at her.

Jinny took a deep breath then let it out again. 'It's ok, Jinny, you can do this' she thought to herself. "Ok, well, see... the reason that I'm here and not at home is because.. well, Kate's in the hospital, and..." she paused, wiping away the tears that were already on her cheeks. "And Kate and I are... together. We... well, I..." she stopped, not able to go on.

John Sr. went towards his crying daughter and embraced her. He was shocked at what she just told him, but she was his little girl, and he would be there for her no matter what. "Hey.. Jinny girl, it's okay.." he said as she cried on his shoulder. It had been so long since she had done that... it had been so long since he felt so needed.

***OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE***
Brad Rymoth watched as his secretary Madelyn walked out of his office. Until Ms. Reide gave her statement, this problem was temporarily solved. True, Kate McCafferty was laid up and the action he just took probably wasn't necessary right away. 'But the sooner the better' he thought, and grabbed his coat to leave.

When he got out of the building, he looked around at his city.. the city he protected. He couldn't believe the outrageous behavior that went on there... both from the criminals and from his own police force.

***JINNY'S DAD'S HOUSE-NEXT DAY-2PM***
Jinny sat in front of the tv waiting for her father to finish getting ready and for Casey to get there. They were going to the hospital to see Kate soon, and she was nervous. Flipping through the channels she sighed. 'There's absolutely nothing on' she thought, and turned the set off.

John Sr. walked into the living room and did a little turn. "So.. how do I look?" He watched as his daughter laughed. "I'll... take that as a yes" he said and moved on to the kitchen. Opening up the fridge, he thought about last night. 'Boy, we were up forever.' Jinny and him had talked for hours... about everything... about her mother too. It felt so good to have his little girl need him again, yet he was scared for her at the same time. Grabbing the orange juice from the fridge, he took a swig, then put it back, walking into the living room again.

Jinny watched her dad as he sat down in the easy chair. She was grateful to have him.. grateful that last night they could finally talk. They never really talked before, especially about mom. 'Unless you count that intervention last year' she thought, and shook her head. She was about to turn the tv on again in impatience when she heard and saw the front door open. Jumping up, she ran towards the door and hugged Casey before he could even say hello.

"Uh.. hi Jin" Casey said, and smiled. He hugged her back tightly and looked over her shoulder at his dad, who was smiling brightly at the two of them. Finally, after she let go, he looked at her. "Hey... nice to see you too" he said and smiled. "I stopped by and got your mail today" he said, and handed her the envelopes he had in his hand.

Taking the mail from Casey, Jinny looked through it silently. 'Bill, bill, magazine, bill.." she stopped going through them in her head when she came to the last one. It was a priority mail envelope from the Office of the Chief of Police. Carefully, she opened it, revealing a letter. As she looked at it, Jinny's face contorted and tears came to her eyes.

Noticing his daughter's distress, John Sr. lept up and grabbed the letter from Jinny. As he read it, his blood began to boil... how could they do this to his little girl?

Dear Miss Jinny Exstead:
It is my duty to inform you that someone has brought to light a situation occuring in your division. I was informed that you and Captain Kaitlyn McCafferty are involved in a relationship outside the workplace. Because of this information, it is also my duty to transfer you to a separate division where you will have as little contact with Ms. McCafferty as possible.

Therefore, Starting on Monday, September 10, you will be reporting to Captain James S. Stewart of the Youth Crimes Division.

There will be an investigation of the formentioned claim, the results of which will affect your permanent placement in the San Francisco Police Department.

John stared at the letter and then at his daughter, who looked shocked and bewildered. Silently, he handed the letter to Casey to read as he embraced Jinny once again.

***THE DIVISION***
CD and Angela sat at their desks looking over a case file their temporary captain had given them. Sighing, CD looked across the desk at Angela. "Well, I guess we'd better start questioning people" she said as she started to get up. Noticing a man in a well dressed suit enter the division and walk over to them, she glanced at Angela again "or maybe not" she said and watched as her partner smiled.

"Excuse me... which one of you is Ms. Angela Reide?" the man asked and looked at both CD and Angela.

"That's me, sir" Angela said, and got up, confused. "How can I help you?"

"Well, Ms. Reide, I'm here to get your statement about Captain McCafferty and Jinny Exstead" the man said, and waited for a response.

Angela stiffened. She didn't want CD to know that she had let the Chief of Police know about Kate and Jinny, but it looked as if she was going to have some explaining to do when she got back. Smiling, she nodded and followed the man to one of the examination rooms, shutting the door behind her.

CD looked after her partner in stunned silence. Had Angela told someone about the captain and Jinny? Why? Why would she do such a thing? Sitting back down at her desk, she waited for Angela to return, thinking up questions and hoping that she wasn't right in assuming that Angela had blabbed.

***JINNY'S DAD'S HOUSE***
Jinny was stiff in her father's arms as he hugged her. The Chief of Police knew about her and Kate... and she was being transferred because of it. Pushing her father away, she looked at both him and Casey before running out the door, not even shutting it behind her. She didn't know where she was going, but she knew she had to get away... and fast.

John Sr. and Casey stared after Jinny in shocked silence. Finally, Casey ran out the front door and looked down the driveway. There was no sign of his sister anywhere.

***THE DIVISION***
CD was still sitting at her desk when Angela and the man walked out of the room they had entered about a half hour ago. She watched them shake hands and then watched as Angela came back to her desk. "So.. what was that all about?" she asked, still hoping she was jumping to conclusions.

Angela sighed and looked at CD. "Well, I thought it best that the head of the police department be informed of the circumstances behind Kate's injuries..." she said, trying to avoid actually saying the words *I told them about Kate and Jinny.*

"So, basically, you're saying that you BROKE not only OUR trust, but Magda's, Jinny's, AND Kate's by tellng them about Kate and Jinny? Am I correct?!" CD was fuming. She couldn't believe that Angela had the gall to do this. Sure, she was new, but she obviously didn't think about the consequences of what she did.

Angela looked at CD quite angry face and looked down at her desk. "Look CD..." she started, then looked back up at her. "I felt that it was necessary because it would affect both of their performances! I mean.. Kate's in the hospital because of Jinny!"

'That's the last straw' CD thought, as she moved closer to her partner. "Don't you EVEN say that! There you go, blaming Jinny.. well, guess what? It isn't her fault! You don't get it do you?" CD watched as Angela didn't respond. "You don't get that you just ruined two lives!" With that, CD stormed out of the division, leaving Angela there to stare after her.

***MAGDA'S HOUSE***
Magda stepped out of the shower and reached for a towel. She had gotten a late shower because Ben had to be run absolutely everywhere this morning. Laughing, she dried off and put on her robe. Just as she walked out of the bathroom, her telephone rang. Running to the other side of her bed, she picked it up, expecting it to be someone else to decided to tell her that Ben had some other kind of practice to go to. "Hello?" she asked, as she ran her fingers through her wet hair.

"What?" Magda asked, panicy. Casey was on the other line telling her that Jinny had run out of the house about a half hour ago, she left her cell phone at the house and no one could find her. "Well, yeah, I just got out of the shower, but I'll be over when I get ready.... Uh huh.... Yeah.. Ok, bye Casey." Hanging up the phone, Magda quickly went to her dresser, pulling out the first outfit that she could put together. 'What the hell happened this time?' she thought, as she got dressed.

***BAR-LATER***
Jinny Exstead sat at the bar looking at her glass. She had been here for almost two hours now and this was her sixth drink. Looking around, she realized she was never here before and didn't remember how to get anywhere. Sighing, she held up her glass, signaling for another drink. Before she knew it, a tear started to run down her cheek, and that was followed by a torrent of others. She thought she had stopped crying over an hour ago, but apparently not. Wiping her face with her shirt sleeve, Jinny thought back to the events of the past months.

The bartender walked over and refilled her glass. Lifting it to her mouth, Jinny continued to cry, not wanting to think anymore.. just wanting to forget... to drown it all out. She wasn't transfered, Kate wasn't in the hospital, and Bobby Fisher was still behind bars... that's how she wanted it to be. 'But I know it's not how it is' she thought as she gulped her seventh drink of the night.

***HOSPITAL-AN HOUR LATER***
Magda walked into the lobby of the hospital and took a deep breath. She was going upstairs to let Kate know what was going on with Jinny. As of right now she had been missing for over three hours. Normally, this wouldn't have been a problem, but considering what had set Jinny off this time, everyone was worried.

Pressing the button for the elevator, Magda waited for the doors to open. When they did, she stepped inside, pressing the 3 that would take her to the captain's floor. 'I hope Jinny's ok' she thought as the elevator made it's ascent. 'Hell, I hope Kate doesn't take this bad either.. she can't afford to.' The elevator doors opened and Magda stepped out, turning to her left, towards Kate's room. When she got there, she softly knocked on the door and walked over to Kate's bed. She was looking a lot better since yesterday and Magda managed a smile.

Kate looked up at Magda as she walked in the door. She felt better than yesterday and she wasn't so weak. When she saw Magda's smile, she returned it. "Hi Magda" she said. She wondered where Jinny was. 'Maybe she's on her way' she thought, then decided to ask. "Where's Jinny?"

"That's what I'm here about Kate" Magda said, and pulled up a chair. "Jinny's missing." She watched as the news sank in... she could see the worry in the captain's face. "She got a letter from the Chief of Police. Apparently Angela told him about your relationship... she... she got transferred." Magda watched as tears formed in Kate's eyes.

"How could she?" was all Kate said. She couldn't afford to expend any more energy. However lively she had felt before Magda came, she definitely didn't feel like that now.

***ANGELA'S HOUSE***
Angela Reide sat in the chair in her living room reading a book. Daniel was working right now and she needed to relax. She didn't know what to think about what had happened today. She expected that reaction from CD, but still, had she RUINED two people's lives? Sighing, she got up from the chair and went to the kitchen to get something to drink. Grabbing a diet coke from the fridge, she was on her way back to her book when the telephone rang. "Hello, Reide residence" she answered.

*phone conversation*
CD: Angela, it's me.
A: Hi CD, listen, about today...
C: Cut the crap, Angela. Jinny's missing.. are you happy?
A: Wait.. what?

Angela was stunned at what CD had just said. Why would Jinny be missing?

C: Well, because of you telling the Chief of Police, Jinny got transferred and ran out of her dad's house hours ago.. and no one can find her. I hope you're happy.

Angela heard the phone click off and she just stared at it. Now she felt incredibly bad, but at the same time she thought she did the right thing. Hanging the phone back on it's cradle, she slowly walked back to her chair as she started to cry.

***BAR***
Jinny walked towards the door of the bar that would lead her out into the world. She paused, trying to regain her balance, before opening it. As soon as she did she was hit with the rush of people and staggered again. Pushing people out of the way, she started to make her way down the sidewalk. When she got about a block away from the bar, she stopped, taking a look around. 'I don't know where I am' she thought to herself, and before she knew it, she was walking out onto the street.

A bright flash of headlights roused her from her daze and she looked right into the high beams of car that was coming right towards her.

***JINNY'S DAD'S HOUSE***
John Sr., Casey, Magda, and CD sat in the living room of Jinny's old house. Magda was pacing back and forth. She couldn't believe that in this room sat four police officers, yet they couldn't find Jinny anywhere. "Are you SURE you looked in every bar downtown?" she asked, trying not to show her distress. She paused for a minute, looking in the eyes of everyone there.

"Yes… yes, I'm sure we did" Casey replied, sighing. Running his hand through his short hair, he glanced at his dad who seemed pale and withdrawn. She had only been gone hours, not days, but everyone was worried about her just the same. 'Where are you Jinny?' Casey asked himself as he stared blankly in front of him, trying to think about where she could be.

CD gritted her teeth. She was so angry at Angela right now. How could she have done this? 'She knows Jinny's a loose cannon… she knows that everyone wanted her to keep quiet. Damn her.' CD looked up at Magda who had started to pace again. "Magda… will you stop pacing?" she asked, irritated. She didn't mean to be snappy or sound bitchy, but at this point, her frustrations were being taken out on anyone who was there.

Magda stopped pacing and glared at CD. "I can pace if I want! My best friend is missing!" she exclaimed, but immediately regretted it. CD's face fell and Magda didn't know what to do. "I'm sorry.. it's just…"

"No, it's ok… I understand. After all, it was MY partner who did this." CD's eyes narrowed at the thought of Angela. No matter what, CD herself felt guilty for Jinny running away… that's how having a partner was like… you were responsible for their actions too.

John Sr. finally spoke up. "Listen… we need to look again. She has to be somewhere… she couldn't have disappeared off the face of the earth." He looked at the faces surrounding him. Casey's was solemn. CD still had the fire of anger in her. And Magda… Magda's face showed the worry that he felt. "Ok… so… let's think…"

The four people in the room gathered closer together as they talked about what to do. They all had one thing in common… they wanted to find Jinny… they needed to.

***HOSPITAL-KATE'S ROOM***
Captain Kate McCafferty lay in her hospital bed, thoughts racing. She was still coping with the fact that Angela had told the Chief of Police about her secret relationship… and the fact that Jinny was missing and no one could find her anywhere. Staring off into space, she could picture every possible worst-case scenario and hoped that none of them happened. 'She could be dead' Kate thought, and shuddered. 'No… not after all of this… she can't be dead…' Closing her eyes, Kate tried to get herself to sleep, but it was obviously no use. She sighed and flipped on the television… there had to be a way to get her mind off of this… she just didn't know what that was.


***AMBULANCE-JINNY***
Jinny lay in the ambulance, unconscious. Monitors and paramedics surrounded her… they would've suffocated her had she been awake to experience it. Her body looked lifeless, but she was still alive… barely. An oxygen mask covered her face and her hips were twisted in a weird way. The paramedics looked at each other and shook their heads. They didn't know if she would make it… but they would certainly try.

***JINNY'S DAD'S HOUSE***
"Ok, so… Casey, you're checking the west side… CD… east… John… North. I'm checking south. Make sure you check every bar, restaurant, and hospital… and anyplace else that you think Jinny might be." Magda was taking charge of the situation. They had been discussing their plan of action for about 10 minutes now, but for her that was 10 minutes too much. They needed to get out there now and find Jinny… no question about it.

John Sr. looked at Magda and nodded. He was glad she was taking charge… his effort at the beginning failed miserably when he had begun to cry. He was so worried about Jinny. If it had been anyone else, people wouldn't be looking for them so early. But Jinny had a history of alcoholism… and she was the most impulsive person he had ever known. Slowly, he got up from his chair. "Ok.. let's go." He waited for the others in the room to grab their coats and head towards the door. He was the last one in line and was just about to go out the door when the phone rang. He ran over to answer it before the call was missed. "Hello?"

Casey turned around and saw his dad answer the phone. 'It's probably just a sales call' he thought and was about to turn around when he saw the look on his father's face. "Dad?" he asked, and walked over to him.

John Sr. hung up the phone and looked at his son and the other two inspectors in the room. "It's Jinny… she was hit by a car… she's… at the hospital." The silence in the room was eerie as the news sunk in.

***HOSPITAL***
Angela Reide walked into the hospital holding her breathe. She had spent the last hour or so thinking about what she had done... about what it could've cost two people whom had trusted her. Going to the elevator, she pressed the button just as Magda had done earlier that day. She was going to see Kate... and apologize for what she did. Once the elevator doors opened, she rushed inside and pressed the right floor number.

When the door opened, Angela let out the breathe that she had been holding the whole way up. She was strangely terrified of walking into her captain's room, and before she knew it, she was at her doorway. Knocking softly, Angela entered and watched as Kate turned her head towards her. She could feel the tension in the air as she walked over towards her.

Kate didn't say a word. Frankly, she was shocked that Angela would show her face after what she did, but then after thinking about it for a second, she realized that Angela was probably there to apologize. 'I'm still not letting down my guard' thought Kate, and she watched her inspector walk all the way over to her bed without saying a word.

"Kate..." Angela started. She didn't know how to tell her what she was feeling... didn't know how to let her know how sorry she was. She just hoped these words would start the friendship she had had before all of this. "I'm... well, I'm sorry for.. well.. telling the Chief of Police about you and Jinny, I just..."

Kate decided it was time to cut Angela off. She looked uncomfortable, and besides, Kate had something to say. "Angela... listen to me. I still can't believe that you did that. I was completely shocked when I found out. I mean... right now, Jinny's missing. The girl that I... love..." Kate was surprised at her own words, but then again, she had felt this way for some time now. "She... she could be anywhere... she could be dead..." Kate's eyes filled with tears as she looked away from Angela. She couldn't bear to think about this anymore.

"I... I know" Angela finally said. "And I know there's nothing I can say that would take that back, but just... know that I'm sorry..." with that, Angela walked towards the door. She wasn't stopped by Kate's voice... all that greeted her was silence. Finally, she reached the door and walked out, without looking back.

***HOSPITAL-ER WAITING ROOM***
Magda's eyes were full of worry. The four of them had gotten there 50 minutes ago, but except for the initial "critical condition" announcement, they hadn't heard a word about Jinny. Getting up, she folded her arms and started to pace. 'This pacing thing is becoming a regular habit of mine' she thought grimly, as she continually glanced at the door to the ER.

Casey stared at the floor with tears in his eyes. This was his biggest fear... losing his sister. She was the only one who listened to him.... the only one who cared enough to. Wiping his eyes, Casey turned his attention to Magda, who was pacing again, a worried look in her eyes. 'I know how she feels' he thought, and looked back down at the ground again... waiting.

'My little girl....' John Sr. thought as he looked expectantly at the ER door. He barely took his eyes off it. So he was the first to see the doctor walk out of the door. Jumping up, he walked over towards him, hoping it was news on Jinny.

"Exstead" the doctor called and watched the three people in the waiting room come towards him. He smiled at them, reassuring them. "Everything's ok, folks. Jinny is stabalized and she's going to be fine."

CD walked into the ER waiting room to find Magda, Casey, and John Sr. standing around the doctor and it almost made her spill the two cups of coffee she had in her hand. Rushing over, she asked "What's going on? Is there news on Jinny?"

Magda turned towards CD with a smile on her face. Tears were brimming in her eyes as well and she nodded. "She's going to be ok... she's.. going to be fine..." Magda loved hearing those words come out of her mouth. "Can we see her?" she asked, turning back to the doctor.

The doctor shook his head. Jinny was sleeping comfortably tonight and she didn't need to be disturbed. "I'm sorry... but she can't be disturbed. You can look in on her, but nothing more." He watched the crestfallen faces before him. He knew how they felt... this had happened to people he loved too. "Come on, I'll take you to look in on her" he said, as the four of them followed him closely.

***OFFICE OF THE CHIEF OF POLICE***
Brad Rymoth was again just ready to leave his office when there was a knock on his door. Sighing, he looked up and saw Madelyn there with an African American woman. "Come in Madelyn" he said.

Madelyn stepped into Brad's office. "Sir, Ms. Angela Reide is here to see you" she said breifly before exiting, leaving the two of them alone.

"Well.. Ms. Reide.. what can I do for you?" Brad was wondering why she was here. They had gotten her statement on the McCafferty/Exstead matter that day, so there really was no reason for her to be here. Putting on his best smile, he waited for her response.

Angela looked into the eyes of the man who sat at one of the most important desks in the city. "Sir... I'm here to revoke my statement that I gave earlier" she said without hesitating. She had given this a lot of thought, and she knew this was for the best. She watched the confused look on the Chief's face, but it still didn't waiver her. She needed to do this.

"Ms. Reide... are you... sure? I mean, what you were saying was very incriminating evidence...." Brad said, trying to make sure that the absolute truth was brought forth in this matter. If she had lied before, so be it... she would be reprimanded. But if he found she was lying now, he would not only be dissapointed but angry.

"Yes, I'm sure" Angela replied, and without skipping a beat added "I was misinformed and the misinformation led me to jump to conclusions... especially since I've always been jealous of Jinny and how easily she made friends. But I've found out differently and I would like to completely revoke my statement."

Sighing, Brad Rymoth got up from his desk. "Well, Ms. Reide, I have to say I'm disappointed in you. Because of your letter and statement I have transferred Jinny Exstead to a different division... but I'm now reassigning her. There's no reason for me not to." Brad watched as this news hit Angela, paying close attention, still trying to make sure she wasn't lying. "But.." he added "Youth Crimes division still needs another inspector, Ms. Reide, so I am assigning *you* there" he finished. He watched Angela's face fall, but she didn't say anything in response. 'I guess she is telling the truth' he thought, and pulled out the paperwork to begin Angela's transfer.

***HOSPITAL-NEXT DAY***
Jinny Exstead lay in her hospital bed looking at all the faces that surrounded her. They had all arranged for her to be placed in the same room as Kate and she was grateful to them. Smiling, she looked over at the redhead in the next bed, then back at everyone else there... and what they had brought. "Wow.. cake!" she exclaimed as her brother brought in the box from the bakery she loved so much.

Magda watched her best friend with a smile. She would be in here for awhile. The doctor had went into more detail last night about Jinny's injuries. Her left hip was crushed and she would be in a brace for a long time before she could walk again properly. And her right hand was broken from falling after the car's impact. "Well, the cake's to celebrate!"

Casey watched as both Jinny and Kate got confused looks on their faces. 'I'm sure they're wondering what's to celebrate' he thought, and smiled. "Yeah... Jinny... you got another letter in the mail saying that Angela revoked her statement and you were back on the violent crimes division." He was happy to give his sister and Kate the good news, and he watched as both of their faces lit up.

John Sr. watched his little girl with tears in his eyes. He still couldn't believe what had happened, but he knew everything would be ok. He was about to go over to her when there was a knock on the door. Turning to see who it was, he was shocked to find his other son standing there, looking grim.

Jinny looked towards the door and the sight of John Jr. made her freeze. She hadn't spoken to him since he had put her in the hospital just recently, and she didn't want to see him right now... not if he would make a scene and ruin what she was just feeling.

John Jr. walked in slowly. He could feel everyone's eyes on him. "So... why didn't anyone tell *me* about Jinny being missing? Or in the hospital for that matter?" he asked, looking from his father to Casey, who both avoided his gaze.

"Maybe..." CD spoke up "it's because you just put her in the hospital, remember?" She couldn't just sit there and act like nothing happened between Jinny and John Jr. only about a month or so ago. She watched John's reaction and was surprised not too see anger, but a bit of remorse.

Kate watched John Jr. as well and noticed immediately that he was sorry. Glancing at Jinny, she could tell that she sensed it too. Waiting for John's reply, she almost held her breathe, wondering what he would say... if it would be some sarcastic remark like usual, or if it would be heartfelt.

John Jr. stared at CD. "That doesn't mean I don't love my sister" he stated, matter of factly. Walking over to Jinny's bed, he looked at her. "I'm sorry Jinny... geez.. I mean.. I'm... I'm such a jerk..."

Jinny laughed and took her brother's hand. "Hey...yeah... well, at least you're admitting it now" she said good-heartedly. She watched as John smiled with relief. Looking back at everyone else in the room, Jinny smiled again. Everything was going to be ok... she knew it.. eventually everything was going to be ok.

From the doorway, Angela watched this entire scene unfold silently. No one was aware of her presence and she wanted to keep it that way. Finally, she slowly turned around and walked away from the door. She knew that things weren't perfect... who said they ever would be? 'I guess it's all better in the long run' she thought, as she walked away not only from the door, but from all of the people inside that room.
